A HEARTBREAKING WORK OF STAGGERING GENIUS... no, not self-promotion!

Hey folks, Harry here with the latest on the film adaptation of Dave Eggers' HEARTBREAKING WORK OF STAGGERING GENIUS and it looks like it may actually one day appear in a theater leaving the audience flooded in the salty liquids of their own over-wrought tear ducts as whales drift past in the aisles humming Tiptoe Through the Tulips... Yes, it will happen... one day...

Harry, if you could think of a funny and cool subject line that would be great. Here's my scoop.

So work on Dave Eggers's cult favorite memoir "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" is finally coming along. Universal is trying to buy the rights from new line and talks are that Kimberly Peirce is in talks to direct. The project has been in the hands of P.T. Anderson (which I thought would have been amazing) with possibly Tom Cruise to star (which I thought would not have been amazing) and then passed to Lasse Halstrom and now finally Kimberly Peirce. Also a screenplay by Nick Hornby (writer of High Fidelity and a close personal friend of Dave's) and D.V. DeVincentis (writer of the screenplay to High Fidelity and Grosse Point Blank). All these Jon Cusack movies makes you wonder who you think they'll ask to star, doesn't it?

My interpretation is that Dave should be played by Billy Crudup. I have spent a lot of time around Dave and no one else in Hollywood I think comes close. Dave told me that he has complete control until the first shot is filmed and that he just wants the film to be "weird." A lot of people around him don't want the movie to be made because they think it might lessen the book but who knows.

Mad Matt
