Sheldrake here with a talk with Jerry Seinfeld and his directors talking about the Bee Movie. I took part in Animation Now at Lincoln Center today and they walked us for two hours through the construction of animated movies, then we all trundled off to a cocktail party with the lads. Here’s my chat with Jerry at the party – and a chat with Nick Park of Wallace and Gromit is to follow hard on its heels – and a surprise about SHREK 3 AT THE END OF THIS INTERVIEW…So keep reading, troops…
JERRY. Aint It Cool. Love your site!
SHELDRAKE: Thanks, man. So, I saw short cut for the Bee Movie today. Looks fantastic.
JERRY: Thanks.
SHELDRAKE: How much effort was made to make the bee look kinda like little Bee Jerry?
JERRY: Well…not much yet. I think it’s more that we want to get the tone and the expressions more than the actual resemblance. But it’ll look a little bit like me, yeah, he’s kinda a spunky little fella. He has my attitude.
SHELDRAKE: A lot of the plot turns around –what I saw was your bee character’s outrage that his beloved honey was being bought and sold by humans. What’s that all about? Why is he so…outraged by that?
JERRY: Well first of all they’re not making it for them. They’re making it for themselves! And they don’t know it’s getting taken. So, you know--wouldn’t you be outraged?
SHELDRAKE: Well, actually, I don’t emit any useful byproducts.
JERRY: What if you were working and then you went to get your check and they said, oh, well, someone took it already.
WE ALL LAUGH – JERRY OBVIOUSLY INVENTED THIS ON THE SPOT.
SHELDRAKE: And you’ve got Renee Zeilweiger as the girl in the picture.
JERRY: That was expensive.
SHELDRAKE: A bee hits on a girl…
JERRY: He takes a shot. He doesn’t do that well.
STEVE HICKNER, one of the directors of Bee Movie was standing next to us:
SHELDRAKE: It looks like a very thoroughly conceived world. It’s New York City but it’s in a beehive in Central Park so you have an apartment complex, the hive, in Central Park, with the bees living in it.
STEVE: It’s a little like a Russian Doll thing: you have the park, and the beehive city IN the park, IN the REAL city.
JERRY: The bees have a park inside the hive.
LAUGHTER
SHELDRAKE: Well…do they have a zoo…?
JERRY: Come again?
SHELDRAKE: A zoo. A park zoo.
JERRY: I dunno if they have a zoo…
Also got to hear Jerry talk about the end of the Marine Biologist episode, his bit with Kramer and the golf ball and George going into the surf with the whale is one of his favorite bits, apparently. He’s a fun guy to talk with, which I guess shouldn’t surprise me. I have his damn show practically committed to memory. The sea was angry that day my friends…

Hugh plays a rat who's flushed into a sewer. Ian plays a toad who was once the prince's play fellow, but who was replaced by a gerbil...and so on.
I've seen the footage tonight and it's fucking brilliant. It looks like Aardman characters. Ok?
