UPDATED!! Third X-MEN Trailer up with HARRY & MORIARTY Comments!

Hey folks, Harry here. I just checked out the new X-MEN trailer, that most of you will be able to see with BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE, if Satan were to drive you kicking and screaming to see that film. Ya know, I just don't know. From just about all reports and contacts I have, I've heard that the film is less of an action film and is slightly more drama in form. That the film is about thoughts and ideals. Yet the trailer seems to try to create a sense of action and adventure... but because they are seemingly just randomly choosing scenes to go together... I just get a sense of... "What the fuck was that?" I mean, you see Kitty Pryde run through a wall, but ya know... the effect just looks lame. You see a huge Cyclops blast... and it really does rock the world, but then they end on what can only be the most fucked up, what the hell is that supposed to be shot I've seen end a trailer ever.

Meanwhile, Mechanic and crew at Fox continue to seem to want to hide the film from sight, but I've heard that the film doesn't suck. There really does seem to be just a mixed sense about the film. Like FOX doesn't know if it rocks or blows. The trailer has some way cool moments, and some way lame moments... The trailer seems to want to overwhelm you with images and sights and sounds, but ultimately it comes across to me as confused and unsure. And what is that music on the trailer.... I don't like it, I hope that isn't supposed to be the theme, it was also on the last trailer.

God I hope this movie is good. I don't want Fox to fail with the film, then cut FANTASTIC FOUR's budget further... or even cancel all movement on the film all together. Keep your fingers crossed, let's hope this one rules....

Hey, all. "Moriarty" here. I have been watching the X-MEN trailer over and over since earlier this evening, and I'm afraid I have to disagree completely with Knowles on it. I think this trailer is great. My hope for this film has been growing cautiously since the first trailer came out. Even with that one, I thought there were things about it to like. I thought it looked like early footage, though. The second trailer was, in my opinion, a big jump. There were some images that I thought promised something special here. I wrote about my reaction in the ShoWest Fox Luncheon piece. With this new trailer, I think this film deserves to be embraced with open minds by comic geeks everywhere. I think Bryan Singer and the entire cast and crew of the film look to have done something we didn't expect... they've created something new.

There are images in this trailer that I've never seen in a film before. There are things here that I've imagined since childhood, but I've never actually seen them. Even if the only new shot in the trailer was Toad stealing the visor from Cyclops, I'd be damn near rabid. That's such an amazing quick few shots. There's something really powerful and iconic about that image. I love the look on Cyclops' face as the visor comes off. We get a look at his eyes, at the horror on his face when he realizes he's out of control. There's two or three other kickass optic blast shots in the trailer. Every one of them makes my geek radar go off like mad. Those are the best. Digital Domain has made one character work properly, at least.

I adore the way Hugh Jackman looks and sounds as Wolverine. I think he's right on the money. Him being an unknown couldn't have worked out better. He's Wolverine. When I look at him, I have no baggage from other roles at all. His hair is perfect, his body language is perfect, the claws are perfect. I don't have the big problem with Storm that so many fans seem to, but I also haven't really heard her in a big dialogue scene yet. The other characters we get glimpses of are all pretty interesting to me. It's a hip cast in the end, and Singer gives us a glimpse at pretty much everyone. There's a good group of bad guys, too. I like Mystique and Wolverine fighting almost as much as I like Sabertooth knocking Wolverine around with an uprooted tree.

Harry doesn't think this trailer communicates story. He thinks it oversells the action and doesn't have any real rhythm to it. Man, I disagree. I love the use of the Trevor Jones DARK CITY music. I love the way the trailer builds. I love that it sets up the philisophical battle that is the heart of the film. Magneto's "We are the future... not them!" and Xavier's "If no one is equipped to oppose them, humanity's days could be over"... these two statements frame the argument that fuels the movie. At least, that's how it seems to me. I haven't read the script for this film, and that's been by choice. I wanted to be able to just judge the film with the rest of you, step by step, trailer by trailer, without spoiling the whole thing for myself. As a result, I've picked up character names and some of the story, but I don't know how it all fits together. I think the new trailer does a hell of a job explaining the premise, setting up what the X-Men are, who the Professor is. I think it sets up Magneto beautifully as the bad guy. I like Ian McKellan's presence in the trailer quite a bit. "Are you a god-fearing man, Senator?" That's a menacing line, and Ian sells it.

I think it's official. I'm nuts to see this movie now. I have no idea what it's going to be, but I know that I love the footage we're seeing now. I know that I am curious as hell to see if they can pull this off. I know that I'm going into it rooting for them. I think they've been smart about promotions like having the Mutant Watch demonstrations outside the TODAY show and MTV. I think the actual MUTANT WATCH TV spots are genius. I think they get it. I think they're doing everything they can to finish this film and make it something special. That doesn't mean it will be, but I'm sure willing to give them the benefit of the doubt at this point.

I mean... LOOK AT THIS TRAILER. There's great stuff going on here. The shot of the jet racing in towards the Statue of Liberty, Jean Grey freezing the Toad mid-leap, that crazy series of shots of Magneto walking out over the unformed walkway, the shots of the x-ray of Logan's arms, that awesome last swing around the spike, fireworks exploding in the night sky behind Wolverine. These are images that we have asked for, time and time again, the impossible world of comic books realized. I'm dying to see Singer get it right. I think this is as good a summer movie trailer as I've seen in a while, and on opening day, I'm there, first show, best seat I can get my ass in. This is the kind of excitement I'm supposed to feel before a summer movie opens. This looks like fun.

"Moriarty" out.

Hey Evil Menace, Harry here. After our phone conversation I've been going frame by frame through this trailer... back and forth and ya know.... I think some of my problems were just stupid problems. Like that Wolverine flip around the Liberty spike ending shot. I get it now... that's one of those 'Dvd moments'. One meant to be "Whoa... hang on... step button step button step button... Ahhhh, I get it" sort of things. Actually, that's pretty clever. I like the trailer, I just... I just need to see this movie. I didn't need a third trailer. What I need at this point is something not created by a marketing department, but something created by Bryan Singer. Looking at this footage I can tell... there's a lot of care at work here.

Whoever cut this thing is fragmenting the movie beyond all recognition. There's some wild ass stuff going on here, but... It's just... weird. I know you haven't read the script Professor... I have. I haven't had this sort of reaction since seeing the Original BATMAN film in it's entirety. It was just not the movie I had pictured in my head. I suppose I just need to let go, lean back and just hope to God that Bryan transports me. This is obviously a film out of his skull, not mine or any other fanboys' head.

I recognize the music now... it's that Dark City stuff... I wonder if that's the direction they are headed with the score? I never really thought of the X-MEN as being a techno-y sounding superhero team. I agree with you that there are things that my comic book loving eyes have never seen before... mainly the Cyclops stuff, and that one fantastic Sabretooth hitting Wolvie with the tree through the tree shot.... and if you step closely you'll see an optic blast plowing through the frozen tundra to do something.

I want to believe this movie rocks, it's just that we've been burned so much so often with this genre films... I'm just antsy. I want more than any other film this summer for this flick to just be a good movie, but... I don't know. They are treating the film almost exactly like Warner Brothers treated THE AVENGERS and they just can't do that. I don't hate the trailer... it just didn't answer any questions or fears that I've built up in regards to this movie. I'm excited and petrified all at the same time. Seeing some of the candy I've always wanted, coupled with memories of thinking I was going to get my candy before and instead getting those nasty butterscotch treats... well... this is like yellow candy... it's either lemon which I love or butterscotch which I loathe. Someone needs to taste this and see which it is.

Harry
