Well, here we go with one of those genuine "scoops" people seem so excited by. Casting has begun on Paul Anderson's RESIDENT EVIL: GROUND ZERO, and so far it's just the two female leads who have been signed up. Right away, I'm interested in the cast that's being built. I just wish it wasn't this film...
MILLA JOVOVICH will be playing ALICE in the film. Love Milla. I'm one of the few people who still supports the brave and dangerous work she did in THE MESSENGER. Been a fan since the moment she rolled that first joint in DAZED & CONFUSED in '93. Leeloo is one of my favorite film fantasy characters of the last decade. Casting Milla is ALWAYS the right thing to do.
The bigger news is that MICHELLE RODRIGUEZ will be playing RAIN. This is a strange move to follow up the critical success of GIRLFIGHT. If Rodriguez is setting herself up as a mainstream action star, this seems like the right thing to do, but if she's after a serious dramatic career, Paul Anderson hasn't exactly been working magic with his actors so far. One film won't derail this promising actress by any means, but when you make a splash as big as hers was, people put your next few films under a microscope, looking to see if you're worthy of the hype.
