Hey folks, Harry here... Special Agent Lestrade went undercover to get to the bottom nook and cranny of this K-19 sub. He fought off security guards and Ex-KGB... He took his very life into his hands, but... I happen to know that Lestrade stole one of Holmes' pipes (due to the constant watching eye of Moriarty) and used this information and threat of ratting him out to make sure the man got the job done. Now, because Holmes hates the internet and prefers the musk of an old book... he'll never know! Muahahahahaaaa... Meanwhile, this is one mean looking sub! Can't wait to see Han Solo and Darkman running about it with funny accents!
Hi Harry,
I've attached the .jpg files to this letter. The sub in the picture is a
Juliett-class submarine, whose class was in service in the Soviet navy from
1968-1994(!). Their primary missions were coastal defence and
anti-carrier-group missions. They were equipped with four surface-to-surface
missiles (I believe SS-19 Shipwrecks, with a range of 250 nm, but don't quote
me on that) and 650-mm and 533-mm torpedos. This would have been a very
noisy, vulnerable sub-- it had to surface to fire its missiles, and take
15-30 minutes to set up the fire-control radar for them.
afttorp.jpg: 533 mm torpedos. One (dummy) visible on right. ABOVE
bow.jpg: A forward view of the submarine. ABOVE
congtowr.jpg: The front of the tower opened up like a clamshell to
reveal the missile-targeting radar. This (IMHO) poor design meant that the
sub had to be on the surface during the firing preparation. ABOVE
dive-cont.jpg: Shows control of the trim and ballast tanks. Note that
everything is analog, and similar to US WWII technology levels. ABOVE
ftorp.jpg: Forward torpedo tubes (650 mm). Had range of ~50 mi. Larger
than anything NATO had. ABOVE
helm.jpg: The helm. ABOVE
periscope.jpg: This picture shows the periscope and radio room. I don't
know who the gentleman in the picture is. ABOVE
sonar.jpg: The sonarman's post. One set, analog (ouch). ABOVE
stern.jpg: A view from the stern quarter of the ship. Prominent is one
of the surface-to-surface missile tubes. These were erected like land-based
missiles (!), lifting the container toward the general direction of the enemy
and firing. Think Patriot missile-type launchers, and you get the picture.
And if you miss, the smoke from the missile makes a great trail for US ASW
aircraft to follow back, while you are trying to get back underway (several
minutes worth of work).
