A KILLER INSTINCT review

Father Geek here with a sneak peek at an up and coming horror flick that was screened recently in the Quaker State

To esteemed Mister Knowles, Professor Moriarty, Crusty Seamen Quint, Father Geek and everyone else of the AICN family. Long time reader, first time reporter. I am reporting a review for a horror film I had the chance to go to a screening the other night in Philadelphia.

It was a production from SHADOW BOX PICTURES (responsible for the flick The Toolbox Murders). Their latest offering came in form of Killer Instinct. The actors that received top billing were Corben "He's Still Alive?" Bernsen, and Dee "ET's Mom" Wallace Stone. However, both of these actors were pretty good but only in this film for about 15 minutes of screen time. There was another story intertwining with a younger cast, basically unknowns (although I did recognize Paige Moss who was VERUCA on Buffy, and I don"t forget a face, especially if it was on Buffy.)

So the story surrounds a small town (run by Bernsen), that is trying to be acquired by a corporation (headed by Wallace-Stone). When Bersen and his gang, act shady about the deal, Wallace starts digging up some dirt on the town, and discovers that 20 years ago, Bernsen and his gang acquired the town from the previous landowner (played by Greg Wood, the father of the poisoned girl from The Sixth Sense), by forcing him to the brink of insanity, then viciously killing him. The story that intertwines with this has to do with the sons and daughters of Bernsen and his crew, all college age, with no knowledge of what their fathers had done 20 years prior. They start a dare club which basically means they sneak into scary places and try to scare each other as much as possible. This particular night they snuck into an old abandoned asylum. They get drunk and play a wild version of hide and seek, but eventually one by one, each starts getting killed off in pretty violent and creative ways. This was cool because each character foreshadowed their demise, (slight spoiler) for example, the hot cheerleader type said something like My Dad always called me his little ball of fire and she ended up burning alive. Without spoiling too much, this story turns into a wild revenge kind of tale.

All in all this was a rough cut of the film, with a temp soundtrack, but I thought it was a fun film with some cool special effects along with it's gratuitous blood, gore and sex, it held its own with some of the other thrillers out now. I probably wouldn't spend 10$ for a ticket, but it's definitely worth my matinee time. The film was pretty much put in the hands of the young cast, and although some parts are kind of campy, they work hard and get the job done, I wouldn't be surprised to see some of them in future projects. The film is going to be distributed nationally the director said before the film ran but first they had to clear up some legalities surrounding the release of the film. So thats my review, feel free to print this and talk backers, feel free to bash it.

Peace from the City of Brotherly Love;

FREAKMOMMA.
