Another media analyst is predicting Blu-ray dominance by the next presidential election year, and this one expects a 3-to-2 landslide. From TV Week:

Blu-ray will overtake standard DVDs as the primary form of content software within the next four years, accounting for 61% of the U.S. DVDs sold by 2012, U.K.-based consultant Futuresource says. Such growth will easily outpace that in western Europe, where Blu-ray will account for between 39% and 50% of DVD sales by 2012, according to the report.

Trade group Entertainment Merchants Association made a similar prediction in June. Futuresource analyst Jack Wetherill blames plummeting pricing for Blu-ray players, “likely” to drop to $250 before Christmas.

Of course, some believe all disc formats will be wax-cylinder-esque antiques by 2012, replaced by a “box” that will, in an iTunes-like manner, contain every movie imaginable in HD.
