Just saw it for the first time the other day. I am not really into old "war" movies, but man this movie was amazing. It truly has that timeless look to it, like it could've been made this year. Amazing movie, didn't even realize how long it was. Watching this movie made me realize how bad movies are today. Ummmmm say crap like Juno. I wish someone had put that cunt in the hot box.

Saw Juno on the weekend. Much like Shakespeare in Love I had a beef with the movie before watching it. It was an OK little flick but not deserving of best pic and director nods and certainly not deserving of best original screenplay. Before The Devil Knows You're Dead was infinitely better. I don't want to join into the Cody backlash but she was rewarded for a sub-par script in a year when there was so much refreshing stuff. When I heard "honest to blog" I damn near choked on my own tongue. Marisa Tomei struts around nekkid in Devil and for a 43 year old woman, she has such a rockin' body that she shames women half her age. I imagine the meeting between him and his agent. "So Phillip, the opening scene. You, Marisa, doggie-style." Hoffman probably reached for his checkbook.

The rest of us look down and see a lump of dog shit; you look down and see a gold nugget. "The Minus Man" is one of the absolute worst movies I've ever seen, and is proof positive that Owen Wilson should never deviate from the flakey spacecase persona he has milked for so long.

Perhaps if it had been released on DVD a few years earlier, you and your gay lover doc falken could have enjoyed it while taking a break during one of your many all-night buttfucking marathons. Oh well.

i thought this column was for harry to show movies he enjoyed and wants to recommend or at the very least, movies he's interested in seeing. so if he thinks so little of AVP:R why even bother showing it? that only goes to further prove people's theory that they are paid linking to amazon. and honestly, even if they are...considering how many movies he lists each week, he doesnt have to put titles he doesn't care for. but i'm probably doing way more thinking than should be expected so i'll go sit in my corner now.

I hadnt seen the movie as a whole since the early 80's. I would just see bits and parts of it in shitty quality and in full screen on TBS or something like that, or that poor as quality 1st DVD release..but ever since I picked up the 2nd DVD release and watched it all the way through, it skyrocked to 2nd almost 1st... Now I think its time for me to watch some Predator...it almost maybe for me the most quotable movie of all time, lol.

I've been privileged to spend some time with Sonny over the past several years. He's a really great guy. I did a story on him when the first AVP came out. The angle was we'd go to a theater and watch it and he would give me his take on it. No lie...20 minutes into the movie he is OUT! Dead asleep. And snoring! It was awesome. I woke him up and he graciously watched the rest of the film. Which he hated! Absolutely hated! His best quote was, "Why? Why did you make this movie? You can't need the money that badly!" Sonny Landham rocks! And, he's a decent golfer, too.

AVP:R vs Juno
by 9000rpm

Let's see, which one to buy. AVP:R was entertaining from beginning to end (c'mon, even the dad and the little boy get facehuggered) and Juno had the irritating little lesbian. Would I ever, ever want to see another moment of Juno? Never. But I'd watch AVP:R once a year because while it isn't as great as the giants whose shoulders it stands on are it certainly is amusing.

Sorry about that - given how early and integral that piece of the story is to the overall story that follows - it's just the setup for the greater story that comes after. In no way does that ruin the movie, but rather is the setup for the whole thing.

Yes, I'm aware most people get all indignant over the AVP films but I couldn't care less. The second AVP delivers. I watched the directors cut of Troy in BluRay (on harry's recommendation. Thanks!) and it was much better than the teatrical releae and I'm hoping the extended version of AVP:R will be even better, too. And even if it's not, I'd still rewatch it more times than Juno.

I came here to clear it up but see that he pretty much has. Yes, the film is way out of chronological order. It jumps around quite a bit. This info comes pretty early in the movie and while it is crucial to the story, that character's fate is not much of a source of suspense for the story. There is plenty of reason to watch the movie with this knowledge if you are looking for a dark drama.

Predator is Arnold's best
by Prossor
Apr 15th, 2008
02:11:13 PM
His best movie and his best performance, now i know that's stretching it talking abou acting with Arnold, but he does give the most conviction to his role getting TO DA CHOPPA and all. THe only other two contenders are Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator, but his characters here are really more one-note and not too wordy. Conan is a marvelous movie but it's a lightweight grunting role pretty much, and i'm not even including T2 which is an overrated cheesy effects-vehicle. T1 is agreat but one can only play an unfeeling robot killing machine so many ways and he knocks it out of the park but his role is still more of a supporting character. With Predator it is his shining jewel, his magnum opus, it's to Arnold what Treasure of the Sierra Madre is to Bogie, he gives his coolest kill quip ever "stick around" and the movie itself is a pure thriller. The character of Dutch Shaefer is his most fleshed out and strongest characters during his 80's prime, one of the most unique action characters up there with Rambo even though appearing in only 1 movie. Come to think of it, it would have been awesome to see his team in their operations that they talked about like Berlin, Afghanista, Cambodia.

was better than AVP. it at least had a solid R rating, used alot of elements from the originals, and captured the darker mood and grittiness. it has alot of great nods to the originals. especially the sound effects. the creature performances are very well done. predator was badass. it does provide a logical bridge to ALIEN as well. predator technology in the hands of THE COMPANY at the end of the movie provides them with technology that will lead to space travel and such (i assume) on the flip side, alot of things about this movie um, suck. the human actors pretty much suck. nods to sound effects are great, rehashing one-liners is not so great. "get to the choppa!", and such..... meh. the pre-alien regurgitating eggs is a huge fuck up. way to break the rules fucktards. you have to adjust your tv settings just to watch the movie, or else you are just watching shadow puppets fight. ever hear of lighting a scene? that being said. i give it a C+

Juno sucks. Why? Because the dialogue was not only unrealistic, but seemed like it was written in crayon by some blond haired, dim witted teenager. You want to make a heartwarming film, don't make your protagonist seem like such a self absorbed douchetastical fuckwit! The only real laughs I could gain from that film were from the stepmother, and that's mostly because Allison Janney rocks anything she does. As for the rest of the film, it made me hate the being called Diablo Cody with a fucking vengeance. I want her head mounted on a pike in front of Fox Studios, to show everyone who will most assuredly mimic her work what the punishment is for contributing to the collective retardation of American cinema. I hope Jennifer's Body crashes and burns, and I hope Diablo Cody goes back to stripping, where she belongs. Congratulations Ms. Cody, the oldest man you've ever had a one night stand is 80 years old and named Oscar.

So The Kinks, Buddy Holly, Belle & Sebastian, Sonic Youth, Mott the Hoople, Cat Power, The Velvet Underground and The Moldy Peaches are ear rape? Everyone's entitled to their own opinion AgentArchangel, but your opinion has just entitled you to being a huge fucking twat. I mean just look at that list. Even if that's not your personal taste in music, it's pretty bloody impressive. As for the film - said it before, I'll say it again, if you don't get it, that's because the cool chicks never talked to you when you were at school. I met smart, snarky, artsy girls, and I am in fact dating a smart, snarky girl who happened to like the film. That having been said, I didn't hate the whole soundtrack, in fact I specifically remember liking that they used Well Respected Man in their soundtrack. Buddy Holly, Sonic Youth, and Cat Power also are quite good. The more ear rapturous selections were the first and last songs used in the film, in my opinion though as you've ably pointed out. Still, I've been called a "huge fucking twat"...that's an accomplishment, and I thank you for the experience.

A really slick, yet low key look at how someone who doesn't really stand out can get away with murder. Not that I'd know or anything. I think that was the second film I saw Owen Wilson in after Bottle Rocket and it was such a complete polar opposite of his Dignan character that I was pretty damn impressed. And slightly unnerved. It's a damn fine performance. Makes you wonder about really friendly, helpful people. I mean more than you already do. I already have the original dvd so I think I'll skip this double dip, but if you haven't seen it yet and you like films like American Psycho or May (or perhaps even the original film, Psycho although if you haven't seen Psycho what the fuck are you doing posting on this site?) you should definitely check out The Minus Man.

Apr 15th, 2008
06:41:06 PM
ahhh, to dream. The fact that this is coming out as a third regular DVD release is pure ass-rape, what with the 'teasing' that Harry mentioned. If you go to the Sony center in New York, where they have a blu-ray demonstration, a major part of the demo is Lawrence. I've seen it in the theater twice... last time was in late 2002 at the Ziegfeld on a BRAND NEW PRINT, that was just... I can't even describe it, it's a religious experience. To me it's still the greatest film ever made.

And with everyone talking about Harry putting down DVD... trust me, if and when you experience either HD DVD or blu-ray, and you keep watching great movies on that format, you stop giving a shit about DVD pretty quickly. I bought HD DVD for like $150, got the 10 free movies and have what I consider the 40 best movies on HD DVD, including Dog Day Afternoon, Jesse James, The Deer Hunter, the Kubrick films, Deliverance, The Searchers, The Thing, etc. So when the format died, and this is something I highly recommend to anyone 'stuck' with HD DVD, I did a lot of research and found the LG BH200. Yeah, just over a month ago they were about $800-$1,000 and after HD DVD died, they seriously underestimated the amount of people who would figure out that not only can you play your HD DVD's on here and upscale DVD, it's also a blu-ray player that's 2.0 capable. And LG has been pretty awesome with the firmware updates on this player. So the price dropped to around $400-$550 everywhere and I picked mine up on ebay for $435. Then amazon gave me $50 as I bought my HD DVD player from them back in November, and I picked up I am Legend, the first Pirates movie, and Bonnie and Clyde on blu-ray for $62.

I understand that it's expensive and people think we're crazy, but I've literally invested less than $1,000 total and I have two players and 43 movies in high def. 10 were free, some were gifts, I picked up a shit-ton of HD DVD's during the fire-sales, and then, in addition, I picked up my first blu-ray's on amazon's dime. Gotta love that format war...

Fingers crossed.

As for Juno, for once Harry is right about the classic-style snappy banter. I bet you're all the same idiots that hated Brick and couldn't see that High-school cliques are a perfect modern analogy to stylised noir.

One of the best movies last year, if not the best. Shitty that it had such a small scale run, why do things like that happen? Also, with its Oscar snub, shows how the Academy only ever unfairly goes for the flicks with lots of marketing, coverage, profits, and reviews. The small guy gets screwed.

Also, Harry's "spoiler" is hardly a spoiler, I knew about it before seeing the movie and didn't stop me from loving it. Gonna have to pick it up.

scene in the whole saga - and completely fucked it up. The bit where clone Ripley discovers the other clones/ clone/alien abortions. It should have brought all the films to a head and Ripley to the very core of what it is to be human, female/life-giving, and whether you are yourself or just a facsimile, etc. Which is what the whole fucking thing is about. It should stop her in her tracks and shake her fucking soul.

Then five minutes later it's like it didn't even happen. Back to Rambolina.

I can't believe it was the same guy who made one of my fave flicks, City of Lost Children which I just watched again today for the first time in ages. At least he made up for it a bit with Amelie. Grrr.

backlash I caught Juno last night. Did it deserve all the Oscar noms and win for screenplay? Not really. It truly was last years Little Miss Sunshine, which I thought was a screenwriters stab at "quirky" family disfunction, in a family that only exists in the movies. But it's the characters that are affected by Juno and her pregnancy that raise this above LMS. Simmons and Janney as the supportive parents..the scene with the sonogram technician..Jason Bateman trying to reconnect to his lost youth with Juno as his conduit..Jennifer Garner's face when she feels the baby kick in the mall..the small detail of Juno's father and boyfriend both calling her "Junebug"..Yes the overly arch dialog, mainly coming from Juno herself, could be maddening. Thank God Rainn Wilson's character was limited to the short scene at the beginning. A couple more cute rhymes or references and I would want to smash his face in. All in all, there is much more to recommend than not.

11:37:46 AM
Besides the fact that it makes people who know nothing about movies think that they are movie experts because they saw it. Is Fox Searchlight. It boggles my mind, and I've been preaching about this forever. How they can have Juno playing in every god damn theater in the world, a movie that cost around 11 million to make (and is considered an indy, probably because everyone in it is already famous) but yet Fox Search made it gross over 100 million. While they picked up two movies last year, Nightwatch and Sunshine and fucking turned them into indy/art house flicks. If Juno had been given the release treatment of Nightwatch and Sunshine, it still may have some value to it. But when you waterboard about this movie thats suppose to be about introverts and nifty blogger types expect people to hate it. It was way too self congraulatory, and everyone in hollywood was way to beside themselves in love with it. When probably 99% of them didn't even really releate to the people being portrayed at all. It was the "indie" movie that wanted to keep saying it was "indie" even though nothing about it was indie. At least Little Miss was just a family comedy that was likeable and I didn't see one of the actors/directors/writers on TV all the time talking about how cool they are because of it. I don't understand how these two sci-fi movies Sunshine/Nightwatch got zero attention. Sunshine was good enough to make at least 50 million had it been released as a big summer blockbuster. Especially with last years lack of good summer movies and sci fi. Nightwatch is a much harder sale because of the subtitles, but after Wanted comes out (assuming that its not total crap) Nightwatch could be re-released and probably make decent money. I mean they could've slaped Danny Boyle and Chris Evans name on there, they have done enough stuff to be known to dumb movie goers. Add Batman Begins next to Cillian Murphy as a bonus. Just Sunshine was an amazing movie, and not half the movie on the small screen, where probably 90% of people who see it will end up watching it.

Name a science fiction film that doesn't have Star Wars in the title (which may fall under fantasy anyway), that has been a big box office success. Pure sci-fi, which I would define Sunshine, is a tough sell to the general public. I think Searchlight did dump it here in the US, possibly after middling box office results in England?? I'm not sure.

Here are some real movies that were decent hits at the cineplex. Galaxy Quest, Lost In Space, The Treks, Alien (first 4), Starship Troopers, Total Recall, Treasure Planet, Fifth Element (if it counts), New Planet of the Apes, Pitch Black 1 and 2, Space Cowboys. And Amagedon/Independence Day/Stargate if you can count those. All those movies (except Pitch Black 1/Treasure Planet/Nemisis/Alien 4 grossed over 50 million I am pretty sure). I mean all and all there aren't as many A-movie Sci-Fi movies out there as you would think. You must remember I am not counting b-movies/DTV movies. I think sci-fi movies are looked down upon because they cost so much money to make, and they don't always break even. But movies like Pitch Black 1 was a big success, and I don't think Sunshine cost an extreme amount to make. And I bet it could've recoup its price tag had they attempted to promote it, to even half the level they did with Hojo.

Damn now I am going to try to remember more Sci-Fi movies all day.

The television spots make me want to kill! I saw it on a very heated recomemndation from a friend who clearly just wanted to stick it to Ellen Page and actually liked it in spite of myself. I was glad the hipster parlance was such a small part of the total dialogue, since it's absolutely insipid (poor homeskillet Rainn Wilson), but it's featured in every aspect of the fucking advertising, making me really dislike the movie. Moreso than that idiot/PR genius Diablo Cody winning an Oscar. That was a serious case of the Affleck/Damon's where the story behind the writer eclipsed the work itself. It's all worth it for Samberg's impression of her on SNL: "I was a stripperrrr!"

Why Jennifer Garner wasn't nominated for best supporting actress I'll never know. And I liked how the story played against our expectations. The first ten minutes nearly made me walk out, though. That animated sequence was way too indie/cutesy and fortunately the worst of the hipster dialogue is done by then. "Honest to blog?" Not the highlight of the movie. And is it possible for Michael Cera to plagued by hairless legs all his life? I thought that was just a joke in Arrested Development until I saw this movie.

It was hilarious that you talk about people who know nothing about movies! Glass houses man. The Sunshine thing was hilarious. You do know don't you that to 'market it as a blockbuster' COSTS around 50 million (more if you're talking say, Golden Compass), don't you? Of course you don't. And you left out the Alien and Matrix films. They were sci-fi flicks that made a bit of money, from memory. The only reason that the movie was semi-successful is that it was WRITTEN BY THE DEVIL... and someone sold thier soul in the good old fashioned hollywood way to make it popular amongst the CHICK FLICK LOVING crowd. Bleah>>> True Sci-Fi has always been a hard sale to the general movie going public. Flicks like Star Wars, ID4, Aliens and Pitch Black are not true Sci-Fi, instead they are ACTION or HORROR movies with sci-fi elements. True Sci-Fi like The Day the Earth Stood Still (please god don't allow anyone in todays Hollywood to fuck up this cinema treasure), Forbidden Planet, Alien, 2001-A Space Oddessy, were all hits by the standards of thier time. I also consider the 5th Element to be pure sci-fi and no one can doubt that THE MATRIX is science fiction. I think that one qualifies as a true hit as well.

SK229 your post about Blu-Ray/HDDVD...
by RyanEsta
Apr 16th, 2008
07:21:29 PM
Is 100% true. I was someone with a large collection of regular DVD's and didn't really think there was much of a different between standard and the new HD formats. But then I upgraded to a new HDTV (which is not near as expensive as everyone thinks it is) and I wanted to get a new DVD player that would transmit an HD signal so I thought "Why not get one of the new formats?" I spent $150 on an HD-DVD player at the time and got 7 free hd movies (which paid for the price itself) and fuck man...it is NIGHT AND DAY. Everyone time some film buff comes into the house, I play them '300' on HD-DVD and then show them the Standard DVD version and they are instantly converted. Anytime I buy a new movie, it has to be in HD now or I'll have to really sit and think about whether I'll want the standard version or not. And good advice about the LG dual player, I'll have to look into that. I want to get a Blu-Ray but the price has scared me off a bit (since I only paid $150 for my HD-DVD player it's hard convincing myself to spend $400 on a blu-Ray player, especially when I like the HD format better than Blu-Ray). But I'm supposed to be getting some money back from Best Buy for buying the HD player there so maybe that combined with selling my player will knock off enough $$ for me to considering getting Blu-Ray.

I guess you missed South Park tonight? As for that list, it was mainly complied of movies I knew and knew a ball park figure of what they made. I follow box office numbers pretty closely. Yes I do not know what a number of them cost to make. But I mentioned that. Plus I am pretty sure neither Sunshine nor Juno were produced by Fox Searchlight, they just bought them up and were mainly involved with distributing them. So they didn't have to sit around trying to get butts in seats because they invested tons of money to have this movie made (like Tristar and touchstone did for Starship Troopers). They just got both movies on the back end, and decided to make more money off of Juno. I am really curious to know what Fox S. paid for the distribution rights for Sunshine, and how much it did cost. I know for Juno it only cost 11 million, and Fox S. only had to let Dioblow Cody blow everyone on staff to get the distribution rights. That movie is awful, and it being a huge hit just shows how pretentious and full of ourselves Americans are. Its like the same reason Adam Sandler movies don't make any money overseas. So what makes you so full of knowledge to nay say my prolific posts?
