Speaking for myself, I find the money I could spend on new Blu-Ray movies loses out to my gas and electric bill, my grocery bills, the daycare bills for my son, my mysteriously doubled water bill, all that damn money to put gas in my truck, paying the rent, etc.

I guess what I'm getting at is that Blu-Ray should welcome a 3 % claim on the home video market right now, considering the economy is CRAP. Also considering the format has a miniscule percentage of titles available versus the amount available on DVD. Don't you think that's a factor?

A factor?

Well over two years since launch? No, to be honest. Blu-Ray has been appallingly-managed from the start. And with a clear field ahead of it where's the motivation to improve things? Region coding gave Blu-Ray its victory. Deny it and you're a fool.

You're kidding me, right?
by LlGHTST0RMER
Apr 30th, 2008
04:09:47 AM
Yeah, over two years since launch, the lion's share of which has been complicated by a stupid format war, with studios switching sides and only just now joining (or re-joining) the bandwagon.

"Appallingly managed?" Yeah, appallingly managed all the way to victory in the format dispute. Not to be all Makiavellian or nothing, but they DID win. Does that mean HD-DVD was "wonderfully managed" into failure?

Where's the motivation to improve things? Gee, I don't know. Perhaps the studios will simply rely on their insatiable desire to make millions of dollars selling new content. It's served them well in the past. And now that everyone's finally releasing titles all on the same format, I think it MIGHT just yield some positive results.

And I won't pretend to know about the region coding issue. I'm not quite that techno-nerdish. Feel free to enlighten me. I'm guessing Blu-Ray's region coding spec was a good selling point to the studios who are understandably concerned about being able to manage the distribution of their own property around the world. If so, how could HD-DVD not consider such a thing when looking for studio support.

Myself, I thought the victory was won by:

1. Having more studio support, including much heavier hitters than Universal and Paramount

2. Warners going Blu-Ray exclusive

3. Wal-Mart, Blockbuster, Netflix, Best Buy and Target all minimizing (or ending) their support for HD-DVD. Though frankly I don't remember hearing them say anything about region coding when they showed HD-DVD the door.

If you've got a $5000 audio set-up and dog's hearing you MIGHT be able to tell the difference between TrueHD, DD+ and DTS. For the rest of us the picture and sound was immaculate, the extras mind-bogglingly extensive and the overall experience truly indicative of what high-def content can deliver. But in the end if they can release sub-$100 Blu-Ray players with finished specs then I'll be the first in line to buy one. Until then, I have no confidence in the future of the format, no matter how many billions Sony chooses to blow on it just to make a point.
Dude, you make me laugh.

Max, really. I don't need the ears of a dog to tell the difference between 5.1 and lossless audio. But if you think that, and if you believe silly internet extras and PIP stuff is the bees knees, feel free to hold to it. I won't tell you what to think.

But I don't think I'll ever get how you look at the whole thing as underhanded cheating by the evil Sony group, as though Microsoft and Toshiba are Mom and Pop shop underdogs. Trust me. Microsoft has entire office buildings to house their Unfair Corporate Practices Divisions. When you villify Sony, it's like you are tacitly sanctifying Microsoft. At least that's how it seems.

That said, at least you could play HDDVD without a million and one updates that your fucking thousand dollar player can't update to anyway so you've just wasted a thousand dollars because now you can't play the latese blurays. Sony sucks ass with all their precious security measures that quite frankly don't fucking work but only fuck the customer that cares to buy their useless shit. When you can get blu-ray titles a week or two before they're released it's nonsense they hopelessly cling to. They don't give one flying fuck about the people buying their shit and besides that HDDVD looked better.

Paramount Home Video Announces First Wave of DVD Releases Ten Titles to Premiere in October

HOLLYWOOD--(ENTERTAINMENT WIRE)

Aug. 10, 1998

Paramount Home video launches into the DVD format this October with a premiere collection of 10 star-studded and box office hit movies representing some of the best from Paramount's extraordinary film library.

In order to firmly establish their position in the DVD marketplace, Paramount is initiating their entry with a selection of catalog top sellers, recent top theatrical favorites and titles from their highly successful film franchises. All titles will be available at a $29.99 suggested retail price in the United States and C$39.99 in Canada. The announcement was made by Eric Doctorow, president, Worldwide Home Video for Paramount Pictures.

"Paramount Home Video is aggressively entering the DVD market with a broad range of titles that will appeal to the current user and draw other film lovers to this exciting new home entertainment option,'' said Doctorow. "As we close 1998 and enter 1999, Paramount will continue to provide a volume of quality choices to drive this format into the new millennium.''

On Oct. 6, Paramount will release five titles starting with the science fiction box office hit based on the popular franchise and one of the most requested DVD titles, "Star Trek: First Contact.'' John Woo's recent $112 million box office smash, "Face/Off,'' starring John Travolta and Nicolas Cage, streets on that date as well. Also releasing are: the more than $60 million action-thrillers "The Saint'' starring Val Kilmer and Elisabeth Shue and "Kiss the Girls'' starring Morgan Freeman and Ashley Judd, and the seductive thriller starring Academy Award winners Susan Sarandon, Paul Newman and Gene Hackman, "Twilight.''

The second group of five DVD releases, available Oct. 20, kicks off with another one of Paramount's top five selling titles of all time, "Top Gun,'' starring box office giant Tom Cruise. The first of the action hits from the Tom Clancy franchise to be available is "Clear and Present Danger'' starring Harrison Ford. "Primal Fear,'' the $56 million courtroom thriller starring Richard Gere and Golden Globe award winner Edward Norton also streets that date. Also available will be two comedies, "In & Out'' starring Kevin Kline, Joan Cusack and Tom Selleck, and closely following its videocassette release, "Neil Simon's The Odd Couple II'' starring Hollywood legends Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon.

Fifteen more titles for November and December release will be announced shortly, and will include more top action and comedy hits from Paramount's film library and an addition to the "Star Trek'' DVD line-up.

The Paramount DVD line will feature interactive menus and scene selection on all titles, and theatrical trailers on the majority of titles. "The Saint'' will have special commentary by the film's director Phillip Noyce. All DVD releases will be available in the Amaray style DVD-SAFE casing, the packaging that conforms with VSDA recommendations.

All titles will be available in widescreen, with "Top Gun'' also available in a two version disc featuring pan-and-scan and widescreen. Audio tracks in English feature Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby Surround. Also, viewers will be able to access French language and Spanish subtitles versions. They will be close captioned for the hearing impaired.

Paramount also announced that they have entered into an exclusive, long term agreement with Panasonic Disc services for the replication of their DVD discs. "We are delighted to be working with Panasonic Disc Services and Bob Pfannkuch in this business venture,'' said Doctorow. "Panasonic's long tradition in the entertainment industry and Bob's years of experience will be valuable assets as we explore and further develop this new technology.''

i'm just a small canadian boy and i've done all my blu-ray shopping through amazon.com and every movie i've bought has been between 20$ and 27$. i'm not sure who or where sells them for 30-40 but yeah, that IS bad. here in good ol canada they're all 34.99 and up which is why i gladly give my money to america because even with the exchange i save. hell even back when our dollar totally sucked a year ago, i still saved buying through them. i've got 12 blu-ray movies now and aside from television seasons, i've pretty much abandoned DVD. now of course since i'm not rebuying anything i already have on DVD it makes for slim pickings but i'm not disappointed in the least. and my tv is only 1080i so i have the "inferior" image and its still beautiful. a while back i talked about watching Pirates 3 on blu-ray and being disappointed in the image, well i recently bought all 3 and it looked fine this time. guess maybe i got an inferior copy or something.

I upgraded to Blu-ray and haven't looked back. true, there are some flicks that aren't as spectacular as others, but not every DVD is all that great, and flicks on Blu look and sound better than their DVD counterparts with no question. Of course, if you have crappy gear (tv and sound) then you'll get a crappy return. That's what it comes down to though, if you are willing to invest in the format you'll get th ereturn for it. If you're just trying to snake by with, "good enough" gear then you'll get passable, but not great, performance. I'll take my Blu-rays of The Fifth Element, Ratatouille, Shoot Em Up and Blade Runner over the standard DVD's (of which I owned all of these) any day.

Is going to be around for a good 10-15 years. Yeah, there will be Blu-ray until that fails like the Neo-Geo. But since Blu-Ray is still a DVD, DVD's aren't going anywhere. You think that Wal Mart crowd knows the difference between Blu-Ray and DVD? Also I got burned too many times being an early adapter of dvd and bough a bunch of movies that now have 13 different better versions out there. Also I do you have to update your Blue Ray all the time? Whats the deal with that? Every new gadget has to be a computer with the updates. Thats fine and all for something like my MP3 player that does it automatically, but on a DVD player I want the complete package already, or like the PSP where the disk does the updating.

Well as long as paying to download movies doesn't become the next big thing.

10:32:12 AM
I for one don't see the difference in the Blu-Ray / HD-DVD formats as far as how it looks on my 32 inch LCD TV. They both look superior to my Direct TV HD picture. I can compare both because I have a combo player (Samsung UDP-5000) And with it's Ethernet port firmware updates are a breeze. I've read that this model is being discontinued though, most likely to them going all the way Blu. So this might be the player to look for as they knock the price down to get rid of em to clear up space for the new models of players.

When it first came out. And if your smart you go to amazon.com and buy the movies for 20-22 bucks a piece. Small premium for unbelievable picture quality.
Laserdisc prices were in the 60 dollar range.

Hell some were even a hundred dollars. Now THAT is expensive. Bluray is not the next laserdisc, price alone ensures it.

On D-theater.Still the only way to get it in hd-you can see little refraction shit going on in beads of sweat on faces-the blue lazer field surrounding the eggs and the detail from lense flares... Sad that we have to waste away our whole lives waiting for movies that came out in the 1970s to finally be released at close to their original rez.Lucas the biggest asshole of all -we bought his THX systems -paid all this money-and then?!No hd anything from that asshole and we're already on the 3rd high def format! He just sells the Thx division-great businessman -total backstabbing fuckwod to his biggest supporters

is phasing out of HDDVD since yesterday and jumping on Blu-Ray since the after-x-mas demand. Anyone thinking Blu-Ray is the next Laserdisc is mistaken, Blu-Ray is the only HD home video format that will make true use of your 1080p TV 's capabilities. Just like standard DVD when it first came out, some initial films just were not remastered well enough for a decent transfer. But in time just as with DVD, films became better produced and the quality eventually shone through. Any Digitally sourced movie like the PIXAR flicks, The Star Wars Prequels or much of todays TV shows shot with HD Camera's will simply look unlike anything you've seen before on your standard DVD's because the detail is so high. Sure if you have a little HD tv you won't notice squat because the point of HD is LARGE screens = fine detail when before the larger your screen the more yor movie format got exposed for its lack of detail. Anyone buying a HD TV smaller than 40" might as well stick with standard discs, but the Blu-ray format is way cheaper than VHS, DVD and Laserdisc when they all first hit the high street and its the going to surpass DVD eventually in the next 3 or four years just as DVD did to VHS four years after it appeared. Every X-mas people indulge themselves in new equipment, expect that equipment to be PS3's and Blu Ray players for the next couple of years! Around every ten or so years we get a new format that dominates the others, VHS dominated the Tape format ut Laserdisc still survived as long as VHS even though it was significantly more expensive. Blu ray is no way near as expensive as Laserdisc was and barely more expensive than standard DVD releases now, by next year it will be beating standard DVD for quality, bonus features and price considering the extra bonuses. The smartest thing to do right now is to invest in a Blu Ray player than can download upgrades and access web content, buy only cheap performance based standard DVD's that don't require HD to see the value of the spectacle and purchase all the Blu Ray films that have decent transfers or are taken from digitally sourced movies like the Pixar stuff and naturally anything that's visual or spectacle based. ..oh, and stop bitching about HDDVD, its a wounded elephant just limping away to die quietly alone, leave it be!

I've seen a lot of standard def Columbia/MGM DVDs showing up at the discount stores recently for 3 bucks a piece. They're brand new, not prev. viewed. I picked up the Easy Rider 35th anniversary DVD for 3 bucks, it's going for 25 right now on Amazon. I wouldn't be to shocked if it was the usual grab bag of crap you find in the Wal-Mart discount bin, but these are quality movies in 2-Disc sets. I guess it could be overstock from some of the big media store chains that went under.
But hey

....where a potentially better technology would get ignored by Average Joe Consumer. BluRay HAD to succeed, at any cost, which is apparently billions at this point. HD-DVD worked pretty well and was, like VHS, not quite as cool, but cheaper and easier to build a player around. Sony had to get a win, they did. How may be questionable, even illegal, but it's a BluRay world, for now. For myself, I have an excellent video scaler for my HDTV setup as I have a VHS player, SD DVD, iPods, old XBox, NES, etc. gear hooked up. Virtually everything looks good at 720p coming out of decent hardware. No one in the house except myself can tell 1080p from 720p. So, I don't see a crying need to purchase or even rent, ANY HD media for a while. When BluRay gets to toaster prices....under $100 for a full featured player, I'll take a look.

It won't show up until Lucas and Spielberg give their blessing. Remember how long it took for those films to come out on regular DVD? Same goes with Star Wars, Jurassic Park, Jaws, and a bunch of other their films. I think the first Speilberg film to go on DVD was 1941.

Isn't it embarrassing when you try to correct a grammatical mistake and make one of your own? It's neither "Blu-Ray DVD" nor "Bluray": it's "Blu-ray," with the hyphen and the "ray" kept lower case.

"Blu-ray Disc" and "BD" are also acceptable, as I understand it.

The fact that you actually felt obliged to post your indignation really adds to the feeling that we should have you castrated... except of course, it's a moot point, you won't be breeding anyhow.

Just pointing out that Harry should've written "Bluray" (or if you really believe that Harry, of all people, would put the proper "Blu-ray") instead of DVD.

It's really not even a grammatical mistake. I assumed that the tone of my post was playfully sarcastic and non-threatening. Maybe it came across as mean-spirited but notice that Harry DID update the headline. Why he didn't remove "DVD" is anybody's guess.

Leaving the "DVD" there is indicative of ignorance and a lack of
