as long as people pay to see them. Apparently these remakes net a ton of cash, no matter how shitty they are. I can think of only one thing worse: Asylum Pictures. This company totally and unabashedly rips off other big-budget movies and sends them directly to DVD to cash in on the latest craze. I'm surprized they haven't done a rip-off of Iron Man yet, something along the lines of "Bronze Man" or "Man of Iron."

I have no emotional attachement to the Friday the 13th series. As a kid, I thought Part 3 had the coolest poster in the world. Funny thing is, when me & my friends finally got old enough to be able to suck the local video store into renting r rated horror videos to us, Friday the 13th never really scared us. Don't get me wrong it was great to see all the tits and killing when you're 11, but Jason was never really scary (Freddy freaked the shit out of us, knives for fingers,...and he could actually run after you!!!). If they actually make him scary (doubtful) and ramp up the gore & tits (guaranteed)...dare I say it might be a worthy chapter? Please, be gentle, I'm trying to be more optimistic whenever possible.......

It lacked everything that made the original so compelling and scary. And the asinine reasoning behind all the changes was transparent in every scene. Despite the "slick" look the original still seems more modern than the remake. Not to mention the fact that the hero girl (spoiler) basically murders the sheriff through sheer, willful stupidity and self involvement in the climax.

The production company and BD want you to believe otherwise. FvsJ was a travesty of the highest order. Almost 20 years in the making and this was the best they could come up with... I really hope these guys don't get the Nightmare remake. It belongs in better hands. It really does...

I don't know how you can call something a remake if they're not even using the same killer. Mrs. Voorhees was the killer in the first one and they don't even plan on following suit with that. The only reason the first one was scary because they took a cue from Halloween to not show the killer. You didn't see the killer at all in the first one but by the 3rd one he became a plodding, zombie, killing-machine.

you have a robust tolerance for crap. Nah, just kidding, people like what they like, that's fine. I used to read Bloody Disgusting all the time, but when they started being buddy-buddy with Platinum Dunes ("don't worry, the Friday the 13th is gonna be awesome, I can't tell you anything but I have been secretly told how awesome it will be!", etc.) before opening this blog it started to bother me. If those guys genuinely like their movies and want them to keep making that kind of shit then that's their thing, and I don't blame them for wanting to pay the rent. If I was into those movies I probaly wouldn't have a problem with it because obviously they're open about it and nobody will take them seriously if they try to review those movies. But to me Platinum Dunes is both holding back the progress of horror movies AND tainting the legacy of some of my favorites so it just makes it hard for me to read Bloody Disgusting lately. I don't want to write them off entirely but it just seems like a pretty huge deal with the devil type situation. I did laugh though when I saw that the first comment on the first post of the blog simply said "STOP REMAKING CLASSIC HORROR MOVIES YOU GREEDY NO-TALENT ASSHOLES!" I promise I didn't write that.

Most genre fans have already forgotten all about crappy remakes (Van Sant's Psycho for example). In my opinion, the only one that holds up AT ALL is Snyder's Dawn of the Dead. Hopefully this F13 will be as much like that as possible.

with this and remakes of Halloween and Texas Chainsaw Massacre is that those were classics and fantastic films. Friday 13th is just a laugh really, summed up when in part 6 Jason comes on at the start in the same way James bond does. Friday 13 th is shite.....but I love them all! (except 5 but i havent seen that since i was 12). So a remake here isnt exactly 'ruining the good name' or anything is it? But yeah either way remakes = bad and all that. And gotta disagree on Dawn of the Dead, I couldnt believe what I was watching. Call it 28 Years later and itd be fine, but dont mess with the name! Then again the original Dawn is my favourite film of all time so it didnt have much chance with me. And Freddy vs Jason wasnt that bad was it? What else do you want? Im boring myself now, see ya!

HALLOWEEN is deservedly a true (horror) classic. FRIDAY THE 13TH will (sigh) be gauged as iconic among slasher films. If they're going to remake anything, I wish they'd take a crack at I BURY THE LIVING. Creepy, original premise (though the ending was compromised after preview audiences polled it as "too disturbing"! It was reshot a la INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHERS--replacing a chilling fade-out with something to placate the mainstream).

What I think is a shame is that people don't really seem to appreciate the first time they saw their own personal horror 'Holy Grail.' For me, it really was FRIDAY THE 13TH, and I'll never forget how new and terrifying it all seemed. Of course, now it's a little jaded to the eyes of the kids viewing these horror movies the same way I did - uninitiated, unbiased, unjaded. I personally want these remakes to come along and keep the characters relevant and alive - so we can take new things from them, discard what doesn't work and remember that the stories can continue the way all great legendary fictions do - they evolve, they change, they develop over time. Film and video and all that have created a permanence that makes it comforting for people to cherish the same story over and over - but I like seeing how new people interpret. That's why I'll always and forever welcome remakes - and sometimes they will work, and sometimes they wouldn't. Imagine if high theater never let anyone put on a production of anything so as not to ruin the "original classic cast." What s shame that would be, and what a tragedy for art.

I'm not against remakes. I like some of them. And I would be excited for almost anyone else remaking FRIDAY THE 13th (part 2). But these producers and this director have already used up all my patience. They haven't made a halfway decent movie yet and they've had plenty of shots. They clearly do not understand what made the originals good, how to update them in an original way, how to make movies scary, thrilling or fun. FRIDAY is not sacred like TEXAS CHAIN SAW, but it is way better than any of the movies they've made so far. Here is the director's resume: 1. directed C+C Music Factory videos 2. Was going to direct END OF DAYS but got fired for being an asshole 3. the remake of TEXAS CHAIN SAW 4. PATHFINDER Do you believe this guy can make a movie that is FUN like the FRIDAY movies? I do not. I expect sweaty, nicely photographed nihilism. If they prove me wrong I will be happy but I expect to see a horse ride a Segway before Platinum Dunes makes a good remake. (The David Goyer movie might have a shot, I don't know much about it.) And the extra insult is that the Jason and Freddy series were supposed to keep going. New Line was trying to do another Freddy vs. Jason until they blew all their money and had to have a garage sale and give everything to those dudes. So yes, I would love to see somebody do a remake (or better yet sequel) with Jason but just not these specific guys. They should've just given the rights away in a raffle and would've had better results. Thanks though guys, I hope your optimism turns out to be justified. But don't hold your breath, I don't know CPR.

Vern, you hit on the head my biggest "concern" about the new FRIDAY THE 13TH. Despite all the complaints when it came out about how it glorified violence against women and how nihilistic it was, I vehemently state that the exact opposite is true. My favorite horror flicks have always been about characters in desperate situations trying to survive - and making it. I don't like nihilistic horror - what's the point of watching someone dangle on the end of a noose? It's just grisly. That's how I often feel when I see movies like SAW. I don't enjoy watching people with no hope of escape being tormented. I'm hoping Platinum Dunes will give the movie a sense of walking that fine line between 'the real world' and the supernatural, that overwrought drama, that entertaining good/evil struggle with the ultimate message that a person can find the strength in themselves to overcome any adversary. What's nihilistic about that? As for FREDDY VS. JASON, Vern, let me say this - I collect FRIDAY THE 13TH - I own every single FRIDAY THE 13TH. I own every single NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET (the box sets in both cases are posessions of mine). I don't own FREDDY VS. JASON. I despised that movie. I had zero fun watching it. It was ALL about the 'hit' moment, the big kill, CGI faces being ripped off CGI bodies. I found it to be just the most unpleasant experience and much gorier than it needed to be. I'm surprised fans love FREDDY VS. JASON as much as they do. To me, the sight of watching Jason fly around the ceiling while pinball sound effects denote every impact is so belittling to the characters (both!) that I'm often astounded when fans of either character/series tell me how true to the source material it is. F.V.J is the biggest reason I'm hoping Platinum Dunes will get it right.
