I don't care what any one says about Tom Cruise, he makes good movies consistently. He might be one crazy douche in real life, but I always enjoy his movies (even Lions for Lambs was watchable). I can't wait to see him as President taking down a shady organization. This is probably the best original plot I've heard in some time. I look forward to this about as much as Valkyrie.

i mean, this group is obviously going to be behind JFK, RFK, etc. but also MLK and Malcolm X, so why would Denzel be their leader if one of their goals is to keep the black man down?

unless their goal was to make them martyrs and mainstream racial equality, and thus being the reason Denzel is so loyal? that would be an interesting twist.
Affirmative Action Casting?
by Greggers
May 15th, 2008
09:27:16 AM
I for one would like to commend Hollywood for its progressiveness in the area of "shadowy conspiracy leader" casting.

For far too long, shadowy conspiracies was the exclusive domain of the white man. But recently, in such movies as Mark Wahlberg's SHOOTER, and now THE 28TH AMMENDMENT, people of color are finally given the opportunity to say "Yes, although traditionally the *victim* of shadowy conspiracies, we can come forward from behind the desk of the 'Crusty Police Captain Who Yells at the Hero,' and actually *lead* these evil cabals."

I applaud Hollywood for these efforts, and look forward to the day when Will Smith can say to a beleaguered low-level CIA analyst who has been thrust into a world he never knew existed: "Don't you get it? There is no Republican or Democrat! There's just *power*! You never had a chance!"

by fassbinder79
May 15th, 2008
11:19:45 AM
Noyce has made some pretty solid political action films with the Jack Ryan series and Denzel as the villain going after Cruise should be interesting. Alot of this film will depend on the script. The concept is there...The talent is there. Is the script in tip top shape? That is the question. A bad script could sink this puppie quicker than the Titanic. But I'll see this for Denzel at the very least. He is the only dependable leading man in Hollywood right now in my humble opinion. Gary Oldman would be my second choice (accept that he isn't always in good films). But both actors are always good in their respective films. But with Denzel I have a certain assurance that the film won't completely suck.

"Sounds like some cheap novel." Sounds like an 80's movie to me which is why I'm so there! If Noyce can do to this what TS did with Enemy Of The State then I am so there. And to all the talkbackers who don't buy a black man being in that position (which is more than a bit racist)...What about Condi and Powell having such close ties to Bush...And another thing? Maybe its a person like Denzel because it would be the thing people would least suspect. Either way I think its silly to debate the point in today's society and more than a little offensive.

There are no Machiavellian cabals controlling the world. There are no secret societies that kill off people who ask too many questions or don't fall in line with the consensus.

Unless it's the Clinton administration, of course. Vince Foster and Ron Brown would love this movie.

It's really ironic that Tom Cruise wants to be in a movie where he becomes the target of a secret cult operation with plans to control the world. Talk about not having much introspection.

Tom! Wake up! What do you think your Church of Scientology is trying to do??? Any member who speaks out against Scientology is threatened and intimidated. Even with physical violence. Cruise is such a tool. Maybe this is his attempt to make a cry for help...

than almost all Americans COMBINED. $30 billion. With a "B". That's just over 41% of its taxable income. Compare that with taxpaying Americans. One company pays as much as over 65 million Americans!

The jagoffs you refer to are in Washington. They should rethink their windfall profits tax proposal. If they screw around with corporations that pay incredibly large tax amounts, like Exxon, the corporations will begin to find more and more ways to pay less and less taxes.

It will only hurt Americans because companies will increase prices for goods and services in order to keep their profit margins the same. More taxes means higher prices for those already hit hard by price increases. And that just isn't smart business.

If anyone can write a masterful script on the Illuminati controlling all world governments, it's Orci and Kurtzman. I can't wait to see the scene where the dog pees on the Aleister Crowley's leg.

Let's put it this way - I do think the premise is exciting, but the casting and the writers are all wrong. Instead of a taut thriller, it may end up something akin to National Treasure or Enemy of the State, just something shallow and glossy. I'll wait to see what Noyce comes up with - hope it's good.

My Friends,
by Senator John McCain
May 15th, 2008
02:20:31 PM
We are all aware that next January, the political leadership of the United States will change significantly when a new president is sworn into our nation's highest elected office. It is important that the candidates who seek to lead our country after President Bush define their objectives and what they plan to achieve not with vague language but with clarity. What I want to do is take a little time to describe what I hope to have achieved at the end of my first term as president. I cannot guarantee I will have achieved these things, but I am presumptuous enough to think I would be a good president. By January 2013, at the end of my first term as president, America has welcomed home most of the servicemen and women who have sacrificed terribly so that America might be secure in her freedom. The Iraq War has been won and Iraq is a functioning democracy. The threat from a resurgent Taliban in Afghanistan has been greatly reduced but not eliminated and there has not been a major terrorist attack in the United States since September 11, 2001. The United States has experienced several years of robust economic growth and Americans again have confidence in their economic future. Congress has lowered taxes and passed fundamental tax reform offering a choice in how taxes are filed. Americans, who through no fault of their own, lost jobs in the global economy they once believed were theirs for life, are assisted by reformed unemployment insurance and worker retraining programs. Public education in the United States is much improved and test scores and graduation rates are rising everywhere in the country. Health care has become more accessible to more Americans than at any other time in history. The United States is well on the way to independence from foreign sources of oil; progress that has not only begun to alleviate the environmental threat posed from climate change, but has greatly improved our security as well. Scores of judges have been confirmed to the federal district and appellate courts, including the U.S. Supreme Court, who understand that they were not sent there to write our laws but to enforce them. Voluntary national service has grown in popularity in part because of the educational benefits used as incentives, as well as frequent appeals from the bully pulpit of the White House, but mostly because the young Americans understand that true happiness is much greater than the pursuit of pleasure, and can only be found by serving causes greater than self-interest. This is the progress I want us to achieve during my presidency. These are the changes I am running for president to make. I want to leave office knowing that America is safer, freer and wealthier than when I was elected. There are serious issues at stake in this election, and serious differences, but it should remain an argument among friends; each of us struggling to hear our conscience, and heed its demands. Each of us, despite our differences, united in our great cause and respectful of the goodness in each other. That is how most Americans treat each other. And it is how they want the people they elect to office to treat each other. We cannot again leave our problems for another unluckier generation of Americans to fix after they have become even harder to solve. I'm not interested in partisanship that serves no other purpose than to gain a temporary advantage over our opponents. We are all compatriots. We are fellow Americans. I intend to prove myself worthy of the office, of our country and of your respect. I won't judge myself by how many elections I've won. I won't spend one hour of my presidency worrying more about my re-election than keeping my promises to the American people. And now, I call on you to do your part in making this vision a reality. I am not presumptuous enough to think that I will be elected our next president without your help, and I humbly ask you today to make a contribution to my campaign of any amount to ensure my campaign is fully funded and able to take my message and vision directly to every American voter. Sincerely, John McCain

The Myopian has returned. Ok, good points (if not read right from Obama's flash cards,) but I digress. You really think that scores and scores of primarily white, blue-collar counties are going to walk into a voting booth where no one can see them, and pull the lever for Barry? Hillary's 70% in WV proves that America is still living with segregation (perhaps not physical, but definitely mental.) For a black candidate to ever win the Presidency, he (or she) will have to be a middle of the road candidate = non-threatening to Mom & Pop America. Instead, who has your cesspool of a party nominated? The most liberal member of congress; not to mention one of the least experienced. You have pandered to the FAR left, where the GOP made the smart move and nominated a moderate who has a history of working with both parties and reaching across the isle. Has Mr. Obama? The answer is simply no. For as much as he claims that he is a true force for ‘change’ in Washington, his brief political record only proves the opposite he is a liberal hack who votes only with the power-brokers on his side of the isle and who could never cooperate with anyone who wasn’t as fiercely leftist as he is.

I can see him being prez, but not President. Of course, GWB shouldn't have been President, either. Or Clinton for that matter. He's a prez if ever there was one.

But talk about drinking the milkshake - that's how to describe Obama supporters.

The guy has no real experience doing anything other than going to school and getting friendly with people of questionable ethics and virtue. He's pandered and he's palavered, but when has he led?

When has he done anything other than tell one group one thing in order to get ahead with them, then told another group exactly the opposite in order to get in good with them? That sounds like the typical Washington politician operating under the status quo, not the agent of change he professes so eloquently to be.

You've really got to take pause when the guy is close friends with Rev. Wright - an active member of his church for over 20 years - then claims not to know about or to share any of the reverend's sentiments regarding America. Come on! He married Obama and his wife. He baptised their children. He spent evenings with them in their home and elsewhere for years and years. And he preached this kind of vile pablum from his pulpit the entire time. Why do you think Oprah left his church years before? SO somehow Oprah knew, but Obama didn't? That's bullshit!

Then, when it looked like Wright was going to cost him dearly in the campaign, Obama threw his pastor, friend and mentor under the bus mega big-time. How's that for being trustworthy and of sound judgment?

Keep drinking that chocolaty milkshake, my friend. I can't say that I blame you. The only other option looks to be John McCain, and he's no great shakes either. Milkshakes, that is.

The populace has woken up to the fact that working across the aisle is not a Republican trait. The Bush Administration and Republican majority Congress have done nothing but engaged in dirty politics, and the electorate have shown they don't trust the Republicans. And why should they? What have the Republicans done with this country in the last 8 years? McCain will only continue the trend because he knows that to garner the support of his "cesspool" of a party, he needs to capitulate on the same policies and tactics that are the heart of that party.

But the important thing is that Americans no longer care about the Republican party's goals. They realize that those goals are at odds with the goals of the citizenry.

I've no doubt there will be people who will vote against Obama, or perhaps not vote at all, because of his race. But they will be a miniscule portion of our society. The majority of America have more senses about them, finally.

Little wonder that LIONS/LAMBS laid an ostrich egg at the boxoffice (Cruise's agent tried to blame Robert Redford for the movie's failure). The public is sick of Cruise's "I'm not gay" defenses (all lame)...the phony marriage...the plugs for his equally phony theology (channeling the likes of Kang and Kodos, or Cloyd and Gidney for you BULLWINKLE fans)...etc. His latest epic, VALKYRIE, has been bumped for "major" post-production repairs (among other problems, Cruise's German accent was likened to a hybrid of Hitler and Donald Duck). And now he's trying to make amends while poor Katie Holmes flashes a tired, rehearsed "Get me out of here!" grin. "The Soup" paid homage to Cruise's reunion with Oprah; hilarious stuff, what with the rehearsed "banter" and Cruise repeating everthing that Oprah gushed. Total asswipe.

I'm voting against the party that spent a trillion on Iraq, caused untold death and suffering, created a far more dangerous situation in the MidEast than was there before, that encouraged and enabled war profiteers to suck the life out of our military and treasury, et cetera ad infinitum.

Apparently a lot of Conservatives are doing the same, judging from the changing face of Congress.

If McCain were an Independent, I'd consider him. But his alignment with this disgraceful, corrupt party, and his intimate ties with lobbyists make him no better than Bush. I wish him no ill will. Just don't want him as President. This country has had enough.

And I don't need to remind y'all how that particular night turned out.

than with the Democrats on most issues. Why do you think he is so reviled by the likes of Rush Limbaugh?

He supports the war because he really believes in change in the Middle East. He believes that a more democratic style of government is possible and would be beneficial to those presently living in such oppressive conditions.

McCain has crossed the aisle more than pretty much any other politician in the last 40 years, be they Republican or Democrat. Do you really believe that the Dems have any intention of cooperating and compromising with Republicans? They have and will continue to act as petulantly as school children when they don't get their way.

I am eager to see the mess we will have gotten into with the current crop of Democrats in positions of power. It is very difficult to legitimately claim that they have done anything productive since gaining control. If they win more of a majority, then it is even more their responsibility when things continue to circle the drain.

Blacks vote for blacks because they are black and want to see blacks in positions of power, whether they are qualified or not. Unless, of course, the black happens to be a Republican!

More whites (as a percentage, not just as a quantity) vote for minorities in elections than blacks do for whites.

The facts bear this out. Bill Clinton was once considered America's "first black president" because of the affinity the black community had for him. But they are voting for Obama, not Hillary Clinton, this time around... big-time.

Obama is garnering 90-95% of the black vote. It is clear that black people are voting for someone they more closely identify as being one of their own, even though he is part white.

Compare that with the white vote. Obama is receiving a healthy percentage of the white vote, certainly FAR more than one would imagine if whites were voting along racial lines.

So what's the deal? Can it be said that blacks are being more racially motivated than whites? It would certainly appear so.

they vote for the guy that promises them the most stuff. See my above post for a prime example of that. And look where it gets them. Nowhere fast.

I am not contradicting myself. Blacks are contradicting themselves. They vote for people they deem to be down wif the shtruggle. Republicans aren't down wif the shtruggle, but Democrats are. At least, that's what they think. Often this leads to bitter disappointment.

Let's face it: Colin Powell and Michael Steele apparently aren't black enough. They could look like Yaphet Kotto and they wouldn't be black enough because the politics don't match with the skin color.

With Obama, even though he isn't 100% afro, because Obama was part of the right church, he rose to the top of the food chain. Now as a senator and a presidential candidate, he's making promises he has no intention of keeping.

Blacks buy into Obama largely because for the first time there's a real chance at having a black president. That's a hard thing to pass up. But if didn't pass muster with his level of blacktitude (say he were married to a white woman, or if he were Republican), it would be a very different scenario.

She does not have the Charisma of Bill And right Now she sounds more like G-Dub with a better dictionary, just like McCain. truth be told Obama, isn't your average politician look at how he has raised money opposed to everyone else, when it comes to Commander And Chief I'll pick the guy who owes the least ammount favors to corporate fat cats and thats why he has my vote and why Most Afro Americans have his vote because he stands for change and a change in the way things are done. and he has a Charisma that can be compared to JFK and Clinton. And Would someone tell me how experienced Hillary Is What has she accomplished that makes her so much more experienced. If I need heart surgery the last person I want touching me is a heart surgeon's wife.

Otherwise her ass is gonna be hurtin' a lot. :-)

Seriously, congratulations. Are you doing a church thingy or a more laid-back ceremony? Shall I mail you some rice to throw at each other?

Thanks, and yes, she's Gotham's toothless shiksa sister who excels at those blowjobs Xiphos is talking about. Marraige will be saving me a lot of pesos.

This'll be a full blown church thang to appease the future missus and both families. Personally I'd rather get married in a small private ceremony but it's been apparent for a long time that it's best to keep my opinions to myself and let the wedding be handled by others ...

DAMN THE PATRIOTS. You're all pawns of the Patriots! Real freedom loving Americans such as Solid Snake, will save the world from the grubby hands of the Patriots! La Li Lu Le Lo?? Not today, not ever! This day we fight back! This day we make sure that Metal Gear is no longer a threat to world peace! Come my friends, we must unite and join Philanthropy! Snake will need more help than Colonel Campbell, Raiden, and Meryl Silverburgh.

Wasn't this the plot to The Firm?

Only that had lawyers instead of the government. The Firm of course had that astonishing third act in which Holly Hunter and Jeanne Tripplehorn have to do a lot of photocopying whilst Gene Hackman is sleeping. Wow. What an exciting premise for a movie.

Jewish people are white (if you want to follow the whole racial thing at all)... But you already knew this. And, Black people could be heads of shadowy organizations too. In many ways, this could be a very effective thing. I'm also (somewhat) pleasantly suprised more people aren't aking the Scientology = Sculls and Cruise is the real shadowy leader jokes.

Job is good. Lady situation is very good. Now, if we get a few more films of the same caliber as THERE WILL BE BLOOD and NO COUNTRY under our belts, 2009 could be a fun year.

And as Rodney Dangerfield used to say "The best thing about having kids is making them!"

Toad, Chrth and all ...

Yack - that's some pretty great news about the gal in your life. I wish you the best. Hope it gets serious enough to talk marraige? As daunting as it is, I'm really excited to refer to "my wife". As for great movies ... I STILL haven't see Iron Man. Dammit. But Netflix keeps fueling my cinematic appetite. Just got Jesse James and No Country. I don't know if there are any great films along the lines of TWBB later this year, but that one came out of the blue for me last year. I'm sure we'll get some modern classics come Oscar submission time.

Of course, not as lame as the EVERYDAY TBer's who applaud such tripe as 'gritty' and 'topical. Please continue to rail against "The Man" and shake your fist with righteous indignation...while sitting at the keyboard for 4 hours a night like the mindless consumer nincompoops that you are and damning everyone else for being 'ignorant'...but not YOU of course...no no no...you watch movies THAT MATTER! Go get 'em TOM CRUISE and DENZEL WASHINGTON. "Fight the good fight for us while we talk about the newest zombie flick, buy figurines of Hellboy and discuss the finer points of Michael Bay's Tranformers". No doubt you'll be there to buy your $12 ticket and $9.50 popcorn soda combo...but that 'Question Authority" bumper sticker on your car seperates you from the rest doesn't it?
