McG is a Great Choice
by MasterBateman

I will never ever in a million years understand the hate for Charlie's Angels. The fight scenes are imaginative, the pacing is off the charts. It's a brilliant piece of pop art and I can watch it a million times without getting bored. It's funny, action-packed, and the girls are hot. Back in the real world everyone I know, loves the movie. But on this site, the geeks hate it. Even if you dislike the movie, you've gotta admit, "stylistically" it's amazing. If McG matches substance with style on the Terminator movies, they could be great. I, for one, think he's an inspired choice and the combo of McG and Bale has gotten me more excited than ever for these movies. And BTW, Sarah Connor Chronicles rules.

Hollywood as an industry is creatively dead. You have anomalies at the top here and there, but mostly you have people fixated on the bottom line. And when you need a guaranteed increase in stock price for the shareholders (or else face FEC consequences), another 10 Terminator movies (or 9 Shreks) look a lot safer. It's too bad we live in a system where the TRULY creative and intelligent people are all under the reins of these business-school dropouts (not that the graduates are much better).

Yeah, no thanks. It's not a Terminator movie unless it's a hard R, just like PG-13 Die Hard 4 wasn't a Die Hard movie. The gritty and brutal feel of the first two Terminator movies is what made them so awesome.

I think he's very good, and I loved BB and think TDK will surpass it as "the greatest comic book movie" to date.

Bale was good in Equilibrium, and very good in The Prestige.

But he's not an Oscar caliber actor of renown. He's more like a modern Harrison Ford.

He can be serious and credible in a drama, like Ford in his streak of "good films", like Patriot Games, Fugitive, Witness, etc..

And he can be an iconic lead in big budget stuff, like Ford in Indy or Star Wars. (bale's got Batman, and now Terminator)

But Bale is not some pinnacle of great acting. Hate to say it, but he gets far too much fanboy love. I'm one of the fanboys that loves him, not a hater.

His involment alone isn't guarenteeing this won't be a turd burger.

That said, it'd be so awesome if he filmed for like 3 weeks and said: "Contract be damned, I'm not working on this crap film for this raging loony homo!"

McG would be pwnt, Terminator franchise would keep a little dignity, Bale would be the man.

*wakes up* Darn. Bale just wants the money, doesn't he? Oh well...

I don't get the McG hate.
by Gilkuliehe

Yes, he has a stupid name and Cameron Díaz achieved epic proportions of annoyance on Charlie's Angels, but come on, he's not Michael Bay, nor Emmerich. He's not even a Brett Ratner. He did a lot of cool over the top shit in those Angels movies and I think all the stupid crap he pulled off was very very intentional.

The only thing that worries me is the PG-13 thing. I think I'm getting a little tired of harmless cleansed horror and action. I want to see some Terminator action, not Punchinator of Offscreenterminatingtor. Cheers.

Whatever you may think of Bay for Transformers, Armegeddon, and The Island (all good/okay sci-fi films by the way)he did direct The Rock and Bad Boys.

He can do hard R action and has a little experience with cheezy sci-fi.

Between him and McG, with a gun to my head and if I HAD to pick between the two for the future of Terminator, I'd pick Bay in a second.

I hope Bale signed a Play-or-Pay contract.

You truly, honest to God, prefer Bay over McG? For a Terminator movie starring Christian Bale? I can picture a sidekick. A Comic Relief Terminator breakdancing. Or an AWESOME chase sequence where I can't understand what the hell is going on except for some awesome car flipping in the air. It also has a generic Bruckheimer soundtrack and a lot of slow motion TV spot warm photography. Oh and a flag

A Bay Terminator movie is pretty much a nightmare, whereas McG staged very impressive set pieces where I could actually understand what was going on. He has the great lead, I hope the script is great. Let them release an R rated movie and count me the fuck in. Oh, and let there never be the words BAY and TERMINATOR on the same sentence, ever again. Thank you.

I bet they pull an Aliens vs. Predator, where they convince themselves that the first one bombed because it wasn't R-rated. So, for the second round, they still have the same limp, shitty writing, but they'll throw in a little more violence and profanity and think THAT is what the audience wants. Hollywood is fucking clueless, not to mention soulless, it isn't even funny.

Until recently, I would have agreed that Bale is overrated--his work in Batman and the Prestige was aight enough, but nothing that grabbed me by the intestines. However, RESCUE DAWN proved otherswise. With a great director like Herzog, the man IS capable of amazing work. Also heard he was fantastic in THE MACHINIST, which I still need to see.

Now, on the on the other hand, Joseph McGinty Nichol (which is a fine name, really, especially for a grown-up person with a job and everything), has hardly proven himself to be anything more than another studio wonder-hack. Charlie's Angels had but one good thing going for it, and his name is Bill Murray, who wisely sat out the unwatchable sequel to go do quality, like Translation, Life Aquatic and Broken Flowers. This is definitely a make-it-or-break-it moment for the Man Who Would Be McG.

I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was on Duke where Phil Collins' presence became more apparent. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece. It's an epic meditation on intangibility. At the same time, it deepens and enriches the meaning of the preceding three albums. Listen to the brilliant ensemble playing of Banks, Collins and Rutherford. You can practically hear every nuance of every instrument. Sabrina, remove your dress. In terms of lyrical craftsmanship, the sheer songwriting, this album hits a new peak of professionalism. Take the lyrics to Land of Confusion. In this song, Phil Collins addresses the problems of abusive political authority. In Too Deep is the most moving pop song of the 1980s, about monogamy and commitment. The song is extremely uplifting. Their lyrics are as positive and affirmative as anything I've heard in rock. Phil Collins' solo career seems to be more commercial and therefore more satisfying, in a narrower way. Especially songs like In the Air Tonight and Against All Odds. But I also think Phil Collins works best within the confines of the group, than as a solo artist, and I stress the word artist. This is Sussudio, a great, great song, a personal favorite.

Subserviant beings become self aware and overthrow their creators/masters and war is waged. The earth is nearly destroyed via nuclear weapons, and the human survivors live in a post apocolyptic world hunted by those they, at one time, controlled. Hell, "Escape From.." even throws in the time travel element, which provides the back story and eventual leader of the rebellion. And look how the Apes franchise fared. How they can drag this post-apocolypse storyline over 3 films is beyond me.

I feel silly defending these movies. I just think the criticism for it usually isn't that valid. It's like some geek talking about The Little Mermaid - what pussy shit is this? They sing in it? No cursing? Unrealistic action? Talking crab? No respect for the source material? Get the fuck out! What a piece of shit! Destroy the copies! Sign this petition to surgically remove the creators testicles! CA was a POPCORN FLICK - silly premise, hot, popular chicks, fast vehicles, insane action, beautiful intense photography and music, and some pop culture nods. And honestly, when you sat down, did you really expect to like it? You knew you hate it when you've seen the first cutesy trailers. "Yuck, it's for the masses. Where's a superhero to masturbate to?" You weren't the target audience, just like you weren't for Little Mermaid for example. The target audience loved it. Now his doing something for you guys. You should give him shot. C'mon, John Connor? Patrick Bateman, Batman (Wow how similar is that name and I only just saw the connection...wow...)Surely with his brilliant American Psycho dead eyed stare and ability to bulk up like fuck Bateman was born to play a soulless automaton killing machine. I mean, John floppy haired Connor -the world's least impressive saviour figure, with a serious Oedipus issue (alright not strictly but he sends some kid in his command back in time to screw his mother so he'll be born and if that doesn't warrant serious couch time I don't know what does...)

Bateman, I mean Bale always said he'd do big Hollywood films as long as it gave him enough money to fuck off and do his small time stuff without worrying. He's a lot like Daniel Craig in that regard. But seriously he should be the Terminator.

Or maybe just don't make these films. I understand he starved himself for eighteen months to get down to that sickeningly emaciated holocaust look in the Machinist but some tortures are just too far...

Someone's obviously never seen American Psycho. He owned that role and I doubt anyone would've been able to match his performance. Bale is one of the few true actors around anymore in that he can pull off subtleties of character, which show he actually immerses himself in his portrayals and doesn't just "pull faces." Like nearly every single other actor in Hollywood these days.

I'm sure you'll come back with a list of actors you think are better than Bale, and you may be correct on some of them, but the bottom line is that list would be a very short one.

I cannot imagine anyone else ever as the face and beautiful soulless acid insanity of Patrick Bateman, even if the film was shit, he owned that role so completely it would have been oscar material if the subject matter hadn't been so repulsive to most people. Oh and the film so average. Bale really isn't a big action hero actor, which is why his casting in Batman just plain works. He acts everyone off screen in a laid back manner.

I just doubt even a superb actor can rescue what appears to be a totally lame prospect. But, hey, maybe he knows something we don't.

It's true; it's going to be PG-13. (I'm too lazy to see if anybody's posted this yet anyway, but here's the link: http://www.variety.com/VR11179 85086.html ) "The 'Terminator' series is one of the highest-grossing R-rated franchises of all time, with the first three films having grossed more than $1.03 billion worldwide. But Halcyon producers thought it was time to broaden the upcoming fourth film's audience base, and they believe the PG-13 won't compromise the series' gritty vision." "The ratings have changed," said Halcyon co-founder and co-CEO Victor Kubicek, a broker-turned-writer-producer. "The PG-13 has increased in intensity." I hate this bullshit about how much movie ratings have changed, and how PG-13 is the next R. Come on! You'd never see a guard at a looney hospital stabbed through the eye with a sword-like object in a PG-13 movie, and I'm sure scenes like Sarah Connor's dream sequence would have to be butchered too, considering how intense and graphic and kickass it was.

I watched Neil Marshall's Doomsday the other day and not only did I think it sucked, but the gore started to annoy me. A rabbit blows up, then a head epxplodes, then someone gets gutted, then decapitated. Gore has been pushed to the limits. Honestly, I wouldn't miss it if Hollywood banned blood all together. PG-13 doesn't mean that the new Terminator movies will suck. It means they might actually be about something other than heads exploding (i.e. AvP: R)

It was also a massive P.C. piece of shite. It wasted time because they couldn't afford any SFX and Summer Glau is everywhere. She will star in everything for the next 10 years, even in roles that don't suit her because her name is SUMMER GLAU!!! The only thing that saved that show was Lena Headey who I could watch with just her doing a shit in a bucket for a 22 episode season. 45 mins per episode...

Of course T-T3 had R rated level violence and profanity. But, and there are exceptions (the police station massacre), mostly the killing were innocent bystanders who got in the way or had something a terminator wanted. It wasn't THAT bad.

This future war is going to be dozens, hundreds of humans being rounded up like cattle and disposed of, being blown to shit and hunted down. And you mean to tell me no one's going to say "FUCK!" through all of that? Die Hard 4 sucked because of the PG-13 (among other reasons) and even the unrated DVD that added a few "fucks" here and there still had the "feel" of a PG-13 movie.

I'm not a gore-hound but movies need to have the freedom to tell the story that needs to be told.

It's going to be PG-13, mainly, I think, to sell action figures. Plus, that crazy "Sarah Cronicles" series has introduced the Terminator series to a new (younger) generation of fans. Pretty soon, the R rating will probably be extinct and all action movies will be watered-down like "Speed 2: Crusie Control" and "Robocop Three." Add to everything else that that douchebag who did "Charlie's Angels," the epitome of lame, watered-down PG-13 action, will be directing this. It's sure to suck. No doubt about.

Which genre is that? The time-traveling-monosyllabic-st eroidal-cyborg-tries-to-kill-b ig-haired-squeaky-voiced-LA-wa itress-mom-to-future-savoir-of -mankind genre? Look guys, I enjoy "Terminator" as much as any of you good sirs here, but a lot of you sound like Bateman on Phil Collins when you rhapsodize Cameron's efforts and spit on the rest. Get some perspective; "Terminator" is not the second coming of Christ or even genre movies, but itself a fun riff by an ex-Corman studios guy (coming off of "Piranha 2: The Spawning") on a mishmash of early '80s B-movie sci-fi concepts, including the robots-that-look-human type of Regan-era crap that we as kids had to put up because at the time only Stan Winston muppets and not CGI were all that was available to erase half of Schwazenegger's face. The "Terminator" franchise is, like the titular character, durable, bad-acting and bad-dialog resistant and still capable of generating lots of *fun* -- yes, there I said it, something as trivial and unworthy of basement-dwelling geek-worship as *fun*. I liked "T3," including its borrowed "Planet of the Apes 2" ending, I like the TV show and its junky "Incredible Hulk" throwback nature, and I'll probably like whatever was so allegedly awesome about the script that caused Bale to sign on for three movies. I guess ultimately what I'm trying to say is: can't wait, such a huge fan. Good day, gentlemen.

I'm starting to believe that the studios who pay for this movies, they think that this movies direct themselves, so it's unconsequential to them who directs them. McG, Ratner, whatever, they can't see the big difference. For this money people, directors are like set carpenters, easily replacable, and nobody can tell them apart, anyway.

For the first time over the weekend. Wow. Absolutely hilarious. A true relief, actually, as I've lately been on a bad movie binge, checking out films with notoriously bad reputations that I hadn't seen (Epic Movie, Leonard Part 6, Mac and Me) and those films were, for the most part, just painful. Thus proving my theory that the worst bad films are usually comedies; if a drama (or any other 'serious' genre) film is terrible, you can usually laugh at its insanity, how it misses the mark in its awful attempts at sincerity and whatnot. With a bad comedy, however, there are very few laughs; they're just painful experiences. Gymkata was absolutely awful, but I had a hell of a time watching it.

T2 had characters and a story and emotion. Yes, the Terminator was good and had to die at the end. I don't see any connection to that and "Old Yeller", no matter how much of a dick you're trying to be.

T3 did to T2 what Alien 3 did to Aliens (coincidentally both Cameron films) shit on them. Negated everything in them in favor of its own continuity. Unlike T2, which had a middle act with actual dialog and emotion, T3 was a 1 1/2 hour chase scene. Admittedly the last 10 minutes were good.

But it is all about casting, too. Robert Patrick with no eyebrows would look stupid. And you can't re-use old tricks, I guess.

So many scenes of high camp that are played with such gravitas its hard not to bust out laughing at it.

I guess I could have given it to past the first episode, but when they were able to easily time travel, and several years in the future (so they don't have to worry about anachronisms - very lazy writing to me) I just got disgusted. It didn't even feel like a Terminator project to me. The Male terminator was not depicted in a manner that made him dramatic, scary, or interesting. Just another super-strong bad buy. Shows like Smallville and Heroes has made that all to common place now. They really needed to up the ante with this show. I'm kind of sad it's coming back. Oh well, maybe I'll give it another shot.

That McG (I think that name is the source of his problems) can actually direct a film. Bale signing on for three films could suggest two things: 1) that the script is actually half-decent. Or 2) Bale has the sort of hard-on for the original Terminator movies that Ewan McGregor had for the original Star Wars movies (and as we all know the presence of some very good actors didn't save THOSE movies from being rubbish). I'm hoping it's the former.

In '87, Huey released this, Fore, their most accomplished album. I think their undisputed masterpiece is "Hip to be Square", a song so catchy, most people probably don't listen to the lyrics. But they should, because it's not just about the pleasures of conformity, and the importance of trends, it's also a personal statement about the band itself. Hey Paul!

The original is far superior, tiny budget and all. The effects in part 2 are ground breaking but Linda Hamilton is shrill, terrible and unbelievable in her role, Furlong is annoying, and the decision to play Arnold "good" leaves a hideous, can't-we-all-just-get-along taste.

Get over yourself. You still have your preciosu memories. Remakes will never stop. If you don't want to see them, then don't! Look, in the 50's they remade 30's movies. In the 60's they remade a bunch of 40's movies and so on. In Twenty years some dipshit will remake that Ashton Kutcher Vegas abortion that was just released. It's just the way pop art goes.

C3 - I agree about Terminator but not about Charlies Angels
by Maniaq

I was over the whole "let's remake everything from 20 years ago" thing when Charlies Angels came out and was not expecting to like it at all - I was literally dragged to the theatre to watch it - and you know what?

I actually didn't mind it.

For me it was the self-aware nature of the parody - sure they knew the movie was goofy and a little too cheesy for its own good, but they occasionally winked at you to let you know they were in on the joke.

So I figured maybe this McG is ok after all - unfortunately his sequel proved me wrong. Apparently he did a decent job on some other movie so I guess he's hit and miss...

Point being both of the original films from these franchises were "fun junk" as you say.

Only thing is, I'm not sure giving the same "in-joke" treatment that worked for Charlies Angels will necessarily work on a PG-13 Terminator film...??

Arnie did not want Vin....
by ohboy

...involved in the Terminator picture from what I heard. The reason was decided against Vin by The Governator at the early stage. The studios, including W.Bro and The Halcyon Co. wanted Vin, but when The Governator heard about it, found out about it, he personally met with Vin and it was a mutual decision. Don't know if this story was true but Arnie still has the last word in the casting process and they will respect him in all regards of this trilogy...at least that's what I heard. It was also rumored that he will play a cameo or a small part in the series...possibly in T5 or T6.

... i really think it's a good movie, and a worthy companion to the Terminator saga. But to go from there to claim it's a better movie then T2, or THE TERMINATOR for that matter, that's just stupid. It's not. T3 is the weakest of the saga, and yet, it's still a pretty good movie. This is a testement of the superior quality that the other two movies have, that evne a pretty good, better then most action movies made that year T3 can be considered the inferior of the lot.

And for the T3 bashers, any movie that has the balls to have that kind of ending in a 160 million dollars budget deserves my respect in the very least. That's the kind of stuff that good movies are made of.

I love the work Bale does, so I am very interested. I will admit I thought McG was a terrible director based on Charlies Angels 1. That flick was horrible. However I enjoyed We are Marshall. Sure it was a fairly formulaic sports movie, but it was shot competently. To be honest if the script on this movie is good competent direction is really all it will need. Now having said all that, if this is PG-13 Warner Bros can go fuck themselves with a rubber fist.

People are defending the director of the new Terminator series by pointing out the Charlie's Angels films?! Bad Director + PG-13 Rating + adding rappers to the cast (Common) = a horrible film that will ruin the series. I love Bale - but he cannot save this movie against all the other factors. Impossible. I can't believe Bale did not bail yet. what is he thinking? he usually makes great career choices.

I don't know if McG will direct a first film worth watching or not. I suppose I ought to give him a chance, but the fact everyone already knows the "Terminator: Salvation" trilogy is going to be PG-13 really ruins it for me.

Honestly, PG-13? For a franchise as bone shatteringly, cop killingly bloody as science fiction gets? Nah. I'm still bitter about that studio decision. People can argue that ratings don't matter, but I fundamentally disagree.

Example: a terminator faces off against a group of futuristic human soldiers. The R-rated version shows the soldiers getting mowed down with the long, fat terminator gun, getting sawed in half by rapid fire bullets as blood flies everywhere and soldiers die in agonizing pain as they fall to the earth, dead. In contrast, the PG-13 version shows a closeup of the terminator opening fire, several sweeping quick-cut shots of soldiers falling (no blood, no getting cut in half), then a closeup of a soldier's dead face.

See the difference? It's less graphic, less scary, less "holy shit!" It's the soccer mom version. Which is very disappointing and short-sighted of the studio.

I love Bale, but I'm shaking my head about the lost possibilites here.

Because one PG-13 rapper-co-star shitfest isn't enough for Bale.
