The whole stuff about how advanced technology has got asnd stuff from previews sounds cool. Trailer was ok, though anyone reminded of the matrix with him in the office building and getting a phone call telling him how to escape?

Nice to see Shia playing a slightly more mature role, it's likely he's gonna be cast as yorick in the last man film adaptation and i'm worried he's too young, seems like he can play older in this film though.

seriously. I don't get the 'hate' about Shia and by all accounts he's done a good job with a difficult role in Indy 4 but the problem is he's being given top billing. Everywhere. And to do so ultimately the true litmus test is to earn audience (not critical) - which he just doesn't have.

How many of your friends say 'ahh man I saw this awesome flick with this amazingly charasmatic guy called Shia last night'. It just hasn't happened. And this is the kid they want to replace Ford? Ford and the select A-listers have breakout roles early on that make you sit up and go 'wow I MUST see what they're in next'. Don't just judge on how much coverage he gets in the trades - seriously ask your peers about him. If you get more than 'oh yeah that guy, he may or may not have been in transformers wasn't he'? then your doing better than me

It's not just Shia...who are the big stars of today? They're nobodies, and talentless, uncharismatic nobodies at that. Sometime within the last 20 years or so we have witnessed the death of the larger-than-life movie stars. Look at action films for example, where are our Eastwoods? Hell, where are our Schwarzeneggers or Stallones? Actors nowdays are prettied up sissy boys. They can't even make a good 'ol American western anymore, they had to cast two Australian leads because the American male actors suck and aren't believeable tough guys. Ashton Kutcher? Shia? Cowboys? Please. Not to mention the fact that these undeserving Disney/CW brats are so relentlessly overexposed. We don't care what they're in next because we know what they'll be in next (and we know it will be shitty), before their current movie is even finished.

Where does all the Shia hatred come from? It's venomous man. He did a solid job in the three movies I've seen him in: Disturbia, Constantine, and Transformers. Regardless of how the movie did, his acting was solid. I'm guessing it's pure jealous rage against him.

Isnt necessarily justified since he does seem to do a good job in every role, or at least in the few things I've seen him in. But I do think the guy should take some time out and do some indies(no pun intended) because hes hitting the over exposure button pretty hard. Its not even his fault . Its like teh Josh Hartnett comple or Sean William Scott complex where some agent/producer/director finds a wonder boy and is convinced the kid is a star and therefore shoves them down our throats. It just so happens Shia's movies have made money so I dont expect the over exposure to stop until he stops bringing in cash. And for the record, Im sorta indifferent to him but teen/early 20's girls flip for him.

I think the Shia
by comedian_x
May 21st, 2008

hate comes from the fact that he didn't earn his star status. Previous, respected, actors earned their place by having a major break-through role and then became stars:

Robert De Niro (Taxi Driver), Al Pacino (The Godfather) Christian Bale (American Psycho or even Empire of the Sun). Shia, on the other hand was anointed by casting directors and producers as the "next big thing" and placed into these movies as a star without earning it.

Ben Foster has a similar past as Shia (comedy tv shows), but he is earning his fame one brilliant role at a time.

Shia is suffering the same problem Colin Farrell did.

Too many big movies, too fast. And I HATED Farrell at first because of his omnipresence, the same way I hated DiCaprio when it was his turn. And, years later, I like Farrell and DiCaprio. In the end, it was a complete waste of my time and energy to revile these guys. Interestingly, I didn't really get to like Farrell and DiCaprio until their Spielberg roles; Spielberg is no dummy when it comes to casting. So, for Shia to show up in an INDY film this soon, there has to be some talent there. And, honestly, it isn't like Shia isn't earning his keep. He's delivered in every role I've seen him in. He may not change much from role to role (yet) but honestly, neither does Harrison Ford, who's been sleepwalking since THE FUGITIVE. I think it's funny that movie fans have been kicking Ford in the nuts for the last 15 years, and as soon as he gets back into a fanboy role he last played two decades ago, suddenly all is forgiven, and nobody's good enough to share a franchise with him - especially not a kid whose last two movies were bigger hits than anything Ford's had since WHAT LIES BENEATH. We movie geeks are a bunch of goddamn hypocrites, when it comes down to it.

He's only in two movies this year and was only in two movies last year. That's hardly all over the place. But he is on every magazine on earth, and that's overexposure. All of them say the same damn thing, "Next Tom Hanks." What the hell is that about? I remember an issue Entertainment Weekly years ago that listed people who could be the next "whatever." Under Tom Hanks they listed Topher Grace, Zach Braff, and I think Tobye Maguire but I'm not sure. Have any of them garnered that status? He better be careful or they'll eat him alive like Jude Law or Collin Farrel.
drewlicious
by Mosquito March
May 21st, 2008

The difference between LeBeouf and Grace/Braff/Maguire is that he's getting Tom Hanks-sized roles in Tom Hanks-sized movies with Tom Hanks-level directors. Grace and Braff are TV actors, and Maguire was almost a Keatonian choice for Peter Parker, who will soon show how replaceable in the role he really is. The rise of Shia LeBeouf is pretty much unparalleled by anybody else in his position, with the exception of Haley Joel Osment. But, while Shia's young, he's not a kid anymore, so he doesn't have the same obstacles that have tripped Osment up in recent years. So, I understand why people look at LeBeouf and say, "Fuck this guy, he's not earning the praise." But, do you honestly see him losing steam the way some of these other guys have? As long as Steven Spielberg loves Shia LeBeouf, he's still going to be in top-of-the-line films that make money. He may not earn critical praise forever, but even Tom Hanks turns out some pretty mediocre-to-bad movies, and, nobody cares, because he's Tom Hanks and people in all walks of life like Tom Hanks. I hate to say it, but he's "everyman". I will not decide until I've seen KOTCS, but I have to say, I think as long as Shia keeps his nose clean off the screen, he's pretty much set. He's already there in the Hanks "everyman" spot - he just needs to cement it and hold onto it. And I really don't see him fucking that up.
I guess we'll know when this comes out

Whether or not the hype is working. Granted Disturbia was really only watchable because of him, never said he wasn't a good actor, and he probably was the reason it made money but keep in mind April is a month where moviegoers wet their appetites until Summer comes rolling in. So this is a real test. Otherwise it will be like George Clooney all over again, all that movie star crap and nobody pays to see him.

It's great that he's in the big blockbusters and all, but seriously, the kid should do a few smaller, more character-driven films that would really test him and show that he has depth and range. It's kinda bad when your career is really at the very beginning and you're already so easy to caricature (NO! NO! NO!). He was great in A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, but nobody saw it. It's great that he's in the big blockbusters and all, but seriously, the kid should do a few smaller, more character-driven films that would really test him and show that he has depth and range. It's kinda bad when your career is really at the very beginning and you're already so easy to caricature (NO! NO! NO!). If Spielberg ever lets poor Shia off that short-ass leash he keeps him on, I'd love to see him in something with a budget smaller than $100 million again.
Agree that Shia should do more indies

sound really old. Like sad, tired, jaded old farts who envy the young guy because he's got what they had in their deepest darkest dreams when they were young. Actually read anything about this guy? The kid is cool.
My impression of DJ Caruso.

He tries to be Hitchcock by way of Spielberg at his worst. His movies (well Disturbia and this trailer) have entertaining tense premises, but are cheapened by sleek MTV style editing. Anyway, haven't seen Indy yet, but I like Shia. Have since Holes and sometimes the movies he is in suck, but I think he's alright. Not great, but he has the potential to be.

According to IMDB.com, Shia is 5' 10 1/2" - only 2 1/2" shorter than Harrison Ford. He's probably taller than a good percentage of of the Talkbackers on this board.

you need, luck, persistance, determination and you happen to meet someone who will mentor you. got for it. Shia had a tough enough upbringing. He worked from an early age. He had to become responsible real early. This happened to my mother when her father died. My gran mother had to bring up her 4 children on her own. When she was working, my mother took on that mantle of responsibility. So he meets the berg and the berg opens the door. The kid got a break. people who toil away really hate upstarts, like this guy. These guys always complain, that they cant get a break, they become sour and bitter. and crowd on to this site to spew their bile.

There was a great show on Irish tv recently
by emeraldboy

made by movie heavy hitters like ros and john hubbard, Marji haberman. Anyhoo, it took 12 wannabe irish actors and actress and tracked thier progress, as they felt the full force of hollywood. This was like Entourage, only it was real. The best line of the entire series was given by an agent called Neill begg. The line was "youll come to my party...if you dont, you will end up delivering pizzas, you'll come to my house and I will slam the door in your face." what was so great about this show called hollywood trials, was that thier dreams of making it big in hollywood, were shattered by the reality of hollywood's bullshit. I just hope someone in the US shows this. not your normal big brother style tv show, just a true warts and all account of how hard it is to make it in hollywood. The up close and personal emotional cracks of these people made it great tv. The episode with agent party was the highlight. it was both heartbreaking and gut wrenching to watch.

Adventure in the screentrade and Which lie did I tell. The second book was interesting but turned into a boring moanfest. Towards the end he published some letters from other writers. the vibe was similar to shia haters excepts these writers were all giving out about writers with MBA. These vets were whining about how they couldnt get their work picked up hollywood studios and these brats with MBA were getting there worked picked up.

He's only 21 for crying out loud. Usually the most can expect from a young actor is to be himself in the most truthful way and that rarely happens. This guy's doing that pretty damn well. If he doesn't branch out in maybe the next five years that criticism will be valid. Then all that media hype, which is the real problem here, will suddenly turn on him. I won't understand the hard on Speilberg has for him though. Yes he's good and he works well but the way he fawns over him you'd swear he was second coming of James Dean. I think it's more of a youth obsession thing. Kind of like how when I say Jeff Garlin go nuts introducing Dane Cook years ago. Yeah, that guy never got annoying, right?
