My older sister was/is ahuge robot fan and took me to see it when I was 5. I still love that movie, even if I switch off the nostalgia. It's just a damn good movie.

Diary of the Dead is a piece of petrified shit, and what’s even worse is that it came from Romero.

“I have added a sound track to the film because I want it to be scary because I want you to be scared”

You’ve got to be fucking kidding.

The film is insulting. You never care about any of the characters at all, except for maybe the random mute Amish guy that shows up out of nowhere. George should have stopped after Day….check that …he should have stopped after Dawn

Oh. And is the new Goofy short on the National Treasure disc?

I'm not a big fan of National Treasure. The thought of purchasing it makes me embarrassed. But I saw it theatrically just so I could see Goofy's How To Set Up Your Home Theatre. I loved it so much. I haven't heard any advertisements regarding it being on the disc though, and since it was an odd match to the film anyways, I assumed it would be left off. If it's not on the disc, does anyone know if it will be released on any dvd in the future? Wall-E?

by DerLanghaarige
May 26th, 2008
04:54:21 AM
Since a few months I got Boomerang and they show all these Scooby shows, that they've never showed here in Germany before. I mean New Scooby Doo movies with a guest star in every episode that is already dead or forgotten, was already dead by the time they made it (Laurel & Hardy) or didn't exist (Batman & Robin!?). And then fucking 13 Ghosts Of Scooby Doo. Vincent Price was cool. The show...not so much. (And I don't think that Shaggy and Scooby should team up with Daphne. Don'T know why.)
To sum it up: If there is one thing that you can always count of, it's that there will ALWAYS be a new Scooby Doo series. I mean, just look how they made just a few years after "What's New Scooby Doo" "Scooby Doo Get A Clue"! I wonder what's next.

At one point Harris, who's been mauled by a bear and left for dead by the naughty John Huston, stumbles upon an elk or somesuch that has been brought down by wolves. The predators are ripping its steaming flesh away in bloody chunks as the dying creature jerks spasmodically. *Sigh* for the halcyon days before damn PETA and that "no animals were harmed blah blah" bullshit.

I though that too. I really enjoyed the fist two thirds of Diary but they didn't have an end and this from a man famous for his downbeat, shocking endings. I mean, the guy is still in his mummy outfit days later? Maybe, it was rushed into production like Land of The Dead but it's infuriating that he still got 75% of the film right.

I missed that Diary came out this week until this update, Harry, so I do thank you for reminding me. I rushed right to Wal-Mart at 4 a.m. to buy it, because I LOVE Romero's movies. But man...I was let down. I think it was worth my money, but still...the gimmick here really was a gimmick, unlike Cloverfield. I didn't buy into it or the characters at all. And the acting was terrible. But it still had some amazing moments and some original gore for a zombie movie, and I loved the gritty look and tone of the film. I think the opening news crew scene was the best. It's definitely worth a watch, and a buy if you REALLY love zombie movies, but I definitely think this is the weakest of the 5. But then again, I LOVE Day of the Dead and think it's his best, and I know everyone seems to hate it...

That's an awful movie. And the idea that an audience is supposed to buy the concept that God kills Mel Gibson's wife (which extinguishes Mel's faith) then organises an alien invasion and a set of character traits in everyone Mel knows that ties in with the wife's last words so that Mel can believe again is a) dumber than a hammock full of Al Bundy's children and b) the most anti-faith thing you ever heard of and c) plain bad cinema. Sure there's some thrills and spills along the way, but the whole thing unravels into a spaghetti-and-meatballs-vomit mess that even a hungry coyote wouldn't eat up. Too awful to construct better comparisons for...

I've never read the comic, I've only read a few Alan Moore comics overall, and I've only seen a few Natalie Portman movies beforehand (Professional among one of them). In other words there was nothing prefacing me from either being for or against the movie as I watched it. Even then this movie just stunk so bad. A hero who fights in 10 minute long rhymes and riddles? Who also happens to have super strength, Hulk-like endurance, a mysterious shrouded past, and oh yeah, the mad fighting skills of Jet Li and Raphael all rolled into one? Portman was okay, but her character was so stupid to have never realized that he had abducted her. That "revelation" was only visible from about 10 miles away. Oh, and a totalitarian government is wiped out by this "hero" and his 25,000+ mob of followers by the end of the movie, who suddenly and conveniently have the clothing to dress up like him and march proudly towards the new downtown government. WTF? This is quality? I was laughing my ass off at this movie's attempt at being a sophisticated take on the socioeconomics of politics. It's obvious why Harry likes it though; he desperately wants this "revolution" to happen right now in Washington D.C.

I too, tend to prefer Day of the Dead over NOLD and the original Dawn. Of course, I'm also a big fan of the remake of Dawn. I think it's too different a movie to compare it to the original, honestly. I went in, expecting to hate it, and I was blown away by how good it was. It most certainly wipes the floor with both Land of the Dead ("They're just looking for a place to go." WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT?!?) and Diary of the Dead, where I wanted every character to die because they just annoyed me so goddamn much.

To be honest I was little bit shocked by Moriarty's review whom movie taste is quite close to my own... It may be not the great horror movie because it wasn't that much scary but anyway this is one of my favorite film this year simply because Romero proves that he can still use that shitty zombie genre while making powerful movie that tells us something important and very present. That gory scene with voice-over at the very end completely nails the whole film and somehow it made me sad.

Yeah Harry you have a lot of catching up to do.NOTLD is the best Zombie movie as it was the first to focus on flesh eating Zombies which had redefined the genre and eventually inspired movies from Fulci's Zombi to games like Resident Evil. Not too crazy bout Diary, but i liked it more than the silly Land of the Dead.

And speaking of gore, the comeback award goes to Sly for Rambo. Good actioner with tons of (unapologetic)flying entrails and gooey guts. Not for kiddies!

Harry, I usually agree with you, but I have to call you on how good V for Vendetta is. I agree it's a great film right up until the ending. The ending in the graphic novel (I have the original issues of the comic) made sense because you could only come to one conclusion. To have a movie director say "No, I don't like that ending. Let's give EVERYONE masks!" completely dilutes the power of the novel ending. I'm sure this is one of the reasons Alan Moore pulled his name from the movie. I would too.

Romero's days of finding the next Ed Harris are pretty much over. I don't know who does his casting, or what pool of actors they choose from, but my local community theater has better actors than those in Diary. And as stated above, the "its not real if its not being filmed, right?" angle was pounded to the ground. Used to be, Romero would let the subtext goalong for the ride. Now, it seems that he has to pound the point across.

Got a massive headache watching DiaryotD in the theatre. Seemed like they were shaking the camera and framing the shots at extreme angles to make the viewer ill on purpose. I made it through Cloverfield, Blair Witch & others fine. The only other shakey-cam film that made me nauseous was Woody Allen's Husbands and Wives. But I agree that Night is the scariest zombie flick I've ever seen as well. Stayed up late when I was 10 and scared the poop out of me. Had to turn it off when the little girl was about to kill her Mommy.

I've only been a steady reader for the past year and a half, so maybe I missed out on the Golden Age of Harry. I'm just amazed that he's come so far, seeing as how he can hardly write, and seems to pull all of his subjects out of nowhere. What the hell does Signs have to do with Night of the Living Dead? "I just finished watching an episode of QUANTUM LEAP, and I have to say, it's nowhere near as good as NOTLD!! They were really holding themselves back!" Seriously. I guess I should just be glad that there was no mention of Yoko or his health problems.

but outside of turning half of the Burmese Army into puddles of strawberry jam, I was not that impressed. Stallone direction was clean and efficient, but the story was so simplistic, it was reduced to an almost comic book level.

Rambo says "Fuck The World", then gets a bit of conscience from Benz' character, says "Ya godda die for sumthin, bedda than live for nuthin", splatters a bunch of bad guys, then in yet another fit of "conscience" while staring at Benz, returns home to, what must be, his 85 year old Dad's farm. THE END. The running time on the shell says approx. 91 minutes, but my clock read 1 hour 20 minutes as the credits started to roll..thats one short movie.

And the mercs came from central casting, with the standard bullet headed Aussie/Brit/New Zealand (?) leader. What was Vinnie Jones busy? It was a decent rental, but not worth all the huzzahs it got from this site.

Fair enough. I think most of the things that you dislike about the film are things that I like. I like that it's simple and short and uncluttered (if not for all the body parts! High five?).

Also, when it comes to running time, you should always take off 1/25 of the time on the back. DVD runs at 25 frames a second. Film runs at 24 frames a second. Meaning a movie that's 100 minutes on film will be 96 minutes on video. For some reason, they never make that deduction when printing the running time on the back of the box.

Since AICN doesn't bother with this column anymore...
