That's a good week of movies you got ahead of you, my man. ELEPHANT MAN and KLUTE are classics, THE GOOD FATHER has an astonishing Hopkins performance in it, FLASHBACK and THE COWBOYS are fun (though for wholly different sets of reasons - you'll see), SHOCK TREATMENT is an entertaining mess of a movie, and mawkish though it may be in the extreme, ON GOLDEN POND is a fitting swansong for a couple of genuine screen icons.

I don't care what anyone says. I love that fucking movie. I used to have it on VHS. I must have watched it 100 times. It's the most depraved mainstream movie ever made. You can't take your eyes off it. And Malcolm McDowell is actuslly really good in it. He's terrifying. To me, he IS Gaius Caligula Caesar and always will be.

Caligula was far from a great Emperor, hated and despised, he only ruled 4 years before assassination. He basically broke the treasury, and was just overall crazy as fuck. Guess it depends on how you define great hehe. But anyway, CALIGULA is amazing to watch, simply because you can't believe it was even made. Peter O'Toole is brilliant as Tiberius, and the rest of the cast do a good job as well imo.

This movie is among my favorites. The long cut is insanely hard to watch but I found that the "kinder, gentler" cut on the 3 disc imperial edition DVD made it a MUCH better movie. I suggest all of you who haven't seen Caligula and are interested in checking it out watch that version, it'll go down easier.

... a hardcore porn disguised as a historic epic, and the granddaddy of of the most pointless sub-genre, torture porn (together with Salo).

Thats what Caligula is, a terrible movie.

But what I find interesting (and a bit disturbing) is that Caligula is treated by some people as a masterpiece or a work of art. I find it's very existance fascinating though, how did they get funding and the stars is beyond me.

You are correct sir. Malcolm McDowell has stated that they thought they were shooting an R rated movie. They were pissed when Bob G. threw in some of the hardcore sex stuff.

Malcom McDowell was in another rated X movie: Clockwork Orange- but that's when hollywood COULD make a more adult film. He didn't object then because he knew it was a black comedy. When the porno buisness began listing their movies XXX voluntarily-many major movie houses and studios refused to make an X.

Even when the MPAA tried making NC-17...a lot of major movie houses refused to show that kind of picture. Thus limiting Hollywood to the bizzar R rating that seems to have no bounderies.

Learn something about this movie.

There was essentially two halves of a movie being made, with the second (dirtier) half kept secret from the main cast.

Your review gives the impression that these cinema greats were part and parcel to the X-rated stuff. When in fact, they weren't, and they were outraged by it.

It was a fucking Penthouse film. They knew. News about them not knowing and objecting was to make them sound like they were duped and is even more of a compelling reason for the audience to check out the movie. Everyone knows McDowell is a daring actor. Guildgud was gay and appeared in other repelling movies (though not as repelling as this!). Carigula is sadistic porn but the star gave it their all in the acting stakes, I'll say that much.

If you watch the bio of McDowell that's included in the special edition CLOCKWORK ORANGE dvd, he talks a bit about how the Guccione directed the cast so that they were unaware that the film was going to cut away to some of his hardcore sex stuff. Bad movie, but I gotta say, the ending actually has a little emotional resonance, simply because in the last moments before Caligula is killed he's shown as a normal, loving husband and father.

The biggest difference between Salo and Caligula is Tinto Brass, the director of Caligula, was incompetent whereas even people like myself, who loathe and despise Salo, have to admit that Pier Paolo Pasolini was an enormously talented director who enjoyed wallowing in the filth. His lechery extended beyond his films - he was murdered by a teenaged boy prostitute. Good riddance.
Caligula's reign

First, he didn't rule for 4 years. It was actually 3 years, 10 months, and 8 days. That's close to 4 years, but still. And actually the movie was nowhere near worse than the life of the real Caligula. If anything it's seriously, seriously toned down. I studied a lot of Roman history in college and there's so much the movie doesn't have in it that the real Caligula did. Hell, they didn't even have his other sisters in the film. Still, I do think it's sad that movies like this don't get made any more. Something on this level, with the equivalent budget, with this level of adult content, with an actual well-written script would be amazing.

Anyone who truly thinks that showing gory war movies to soldiers will make them stop fighting is kidding themselves. Stanley Kubrick meant Full Metal Jacket to be a damning indictment of the futility of war, but two of the soldiers I know, and as depicted in Jarhead, talked about it being an inspiration for them voluneteering. Along those same lines, if Mr Pasolini was so naive as to think that he was going to show something so horrific it would show all Fascists the error of their way, he was deluding himself. Just as Mr Moore can only preach to the converted, as did Mr Pasolini, who created a film so loathesome that A) the mainstream audience (the underclass he seemed so determined to help) would never see it and B) in reality who it would eally appeal to would be those who would be sexually turned on by it. Around 2000, I remember looking at it on EBAY cuz i happened to see that rare unedited version at a mom and pop store. It was selling at the time for between 250 and 400 online. Now you tell me - who do you think was buying it - Pasolini completists - or the others. My bet is the others. But maybe I'm just a cynical bastard.

I can, for the most part, separate my disdain for the material and the man from my genuine admiration of his immense talent. When i saw Gospel of St Mark or whomever, I can guarantee you that Marty Scorsese would point to that film as a huge inspiration of his. Some of the camera movements, the composition in lens, even the scoring, all can be seen in Scorseses later works. There were even parts of Salo I was in near awe of the filmmaking techniques but thought it a shame they were wasted in such a debauched efoort.

I would absolutely love this movie. I love the grandeur of it. I thought it was really well made actually, but you can see where they just threw in a few extra and wholly unnecessary "shots". I feel bad for Malcom McDowell because it should be something he could be proud of but those little inclusions take any kind of respect away from it. It's a shame. I watched it for the first time a year or so ago. Instead of not wanting to ever seeing it again, I put it right back on when it was over. It really made me think about human nature and even our own leaders today.

And about daring movies, it is interesting to me too when a "groundbreaking" movie comes along nowadays and you watch it and there is basically nothing to it. Every once and a while you see a movie like this that's nearly 30 years old that makes you wonder what people are talking about. A movie I saw not that long ago, CRUISING, also from 1980, gave me the same reaction. I thought it was a great movie, but obviously people of the time weren't ready for it and in the context of the time, it upset a lot of people. But imo, it's a great film that movie fans should see if they haven't. If Netflix didn't know me so well, I probably wouldn't have seen it either.

The actual Roman emperor, I mean. The historical evidence we have for his reign is primarily texts written nearly a century after his death, by writers who had to worry about sucking up to the new dynasty of emperors that had displaced the Julio-Claudians (of which Caligula was one).

These writers (Tacitus and Suetonius) were clearly sympathetic to the senatorial faction that Caligula's family had pushed out of power. Most of the really twisted and perverted stuff comes from Suetonius, who wrote in what we might now call the 'tabloid journalism' style of writing--his "biographies" of the emperors are often just collections of gossip and slander that had accumulated in the decades that separated them from him.

I'm not saying that Caligula was a good emperor--I'm just saying that we have to take all the historical "facts" we know about him with a grain of salt. Imagine if, in two thousand years, the majority of the evidence that remained describing the Bush presidency was a collection of National Enquirer issues from 2001-9 and an Al Franken book. (Actually, since both of these would be contemporary sources, they would be much more reliable than Tacitus and Suetonius). But, from these, you could probably get some idea of the arguments that people had against Bush--many of which are based in fact--but you'd also get a lot of innuendo and exaggeration.

And lay off slamming Quint!

Sure, there are some great movies he hasn't (or hadn't) seen. Cool Hand Luke! I quote that movie every time I do yard work. ("Takin' em off boss?"). But I'm sure there are giant gaps in every movie buff's viewing experience.

There are only so many hours of your life that you can devote to sitting in front of movies--great movies even more so, because you can't just have them on while folding laundry or surfing the internet--you need to have a situation where you can really absorb the movie, and then have time to think/talk about it afterward. We've all got movies we haven't seen (or books we haven't read, music we haven't heard, etc.).

or is this movie very dissapointing if youve been told by others that its a 'hardcore sex porno with famous actors like malcom mcdowell' . its a film with hardcore sex scenes (filmed at clearly different times with different actors) spliced into a badly made roman emporor story i guess it was kind of shocking to see mcdowell act out a fisting, but is Quint implying he ACTually fisted someone? i hope not... this would be akin to someone in my 7th grade class trying to convince me 'hey man the sex in dream-on on hbo is totally real, they just dont show the closeups because its on tv' WTF?!?

Ya know - if anyone here should be acting all high and mighty over what Quint hasn't seen - it's me. And I have... for years. But this series represents a movie geek's exploration outside his typical comfort zone.

Most modern movie fans stay within their niche. The movies of their time. The movies specifically catered to their tastes. And anything outside of that is verboten.

When I first met Quint, when he was at the age of 14 - he bought the one-sheet to the original FRIDAY THE 13TH. The next time I saw him - a month later - he bought the half sheet to Cheech & Chong's NICE DREAMS and a two sheet for ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST which he claimed was one of his favorite movies. So at age 14, he was a ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST fan. That's pretty darn good.

However, bitching at any movie fan that is exploring the world of film that they knew existed, but hadn't ventured to yet... is terrible. It's discouraging a process of discovery and the expansion of cinematic knowledge.

How about you - what films haven't you seen, that you know you haven't? Admit it & rectify it.

Haven't seen it in years, but I remember thinking, for all the money they spent, many scenes and many sets looked cheap. The costumes were all wrong. The cinematography looked amateurish and murky, like a group of kids with a camera in a basement. Tiberius's grotto, which I've read some people complimenting as some kind of astounding set, looked cheap and flimsy. Gore Vidal's bad dialogue mouthed disinterestedly by bought-off British thespians or Italian actors who didn't know English and had to be dubbed. Hard core scenes obviously spliced in after the fact. Just a mismatched, jumbled trainwreck. The writer's original purpose was a meditation on how absolute power corrupts, and the final film does inspire some thought in that direction, but on the whole, a viewer is so stupefied by all the disgusting and exploitative crap that fills out the film's running time that the message gets lost. Oh, and catch that final bit of music after Caligula's assassination, the music that runs over the credits? Re-used by the Coen brothers for Hudsucker Proxy. That piece of music actually comes from a Russian ballet of Spartacus.

I realize Pasolini lived during the time of the actual Republic of Salo (what German-occupied northern Italy was called under a puppet government of Mussolini; the royal Italian government had already capitulated to the Allies) and claims that the film is supposedly based real events of his experience, but nothing I've ever read about Fascist Italy even in its last year comes close to what's depicted in the movie. It's a zany communist's exaggeration about the corruption of power and the horrors of fascism and, ultimately, the excesses of capitalism/consumerism. Using extreme exploitation to make his point. Whatever. You either buy what he has to say, and how he says it, or you don't. I personally don't buy it.

To all the supporters, especially Harry. I knew I had a lot of holes in my film education, but I didn't realize how bad it was until I started writing them down. I suspect a lot of you are like me in that you think you've seen a whole lot, know there are some big ones you haven't seen and then when you start writing down what you haven't seen you'll be surprised. And yes, it is a little embarrassing, but I can say that this series has forced me into a routine that I'm quite enjoying, getting to movies that were always "I'll get to them later." Elephant Man and The Sound of Music I've had in the house for over 3 years, but that was the busiest time in my life business-wise and the current crop of films were always the priority. Thanks to Beaks and Merrick I'm able to have enough free time to really hit these films and I feel like I did as a teenager when I'd do those runs to the video store and rent my limit of films I hadn't seen before. It's great and helping me to fall in love with film all over again.

If you don't find the articles interesting, that's fair enough. More than fair. You at least gave them a try. There are lots who like them, myself included, and they're not going to stop anytime soon. So, if they're not your thing, we have plenty other stories to distract yourself with. I don't see why you'd come into these knowing you don't like them just tell everybody that.

And I never claimed to be a film guru. Ever. I've always been a film fan and I have commented on the industry from that perspective. When you just list off the movies I haven't seen I look like an ignoramus, true. But I do have an educated opinion of film, having seen tens of thousands of movies, not all from the last 15 years, either. If this series was looking back at all the movies I had seen... that to me would be boring as hell. That's not the point. I'm seeing a shitload of movies I've had and wanted to watch for a long time thanks to this daily routine. Sure, I put myself out there for personal attacks by showing my weaknesses on film education as opposed to my strengths, but for all the negative nancys out there, there are a lot of people I've been talking to who have been following along and sharing stories of their own, getting invigorated to watch some older cinema just like me. That's what makes it worth it, that and the kind of film high you get when you see something that knocks you silly, like Harper or Point Blank or The Sound of Music so far on this list.

a shitload of money meets a mountain of cocaine, a raging libido, and a guy with access to a movie studio. It also features one of the hottest lesbian scenes ever, and a really miraculous blow job scene in the midst of a mindblowingly huge orgy scene featuring beautiful women everywhere -- no banged up sluts, high quality superbabes who don't mind fucking on camera. Classic! I'm amazed it even got made.

I recommend listening to the commentaries on the 3 disk edition. Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren each recorded a commentary, and it is fascinating stuff. Also, watch the extras. Caligula is a terrible movie, but the story behind the movie is very interesting. (BTW, you can get the bonus disks from netflix with the commentaries).

I find it hard to believe you've taken the time to bitch about someone ACTIVELY TRYING to watch films he's been wanting to watch his whole life. Films that you yourself said you wish Hollywood would go back to making. Hell, I admire Quint's dedication and wish I had access to just a fraction of the films I haven't seen yet. Feel free to continue moaning though, while we enjoy ourselves and actually try to increase our film knowledge.

Wow, touched a nerve by not praising Pasolini, didn't I? Look, I'll explain a little more and then leave it alone but I'm definitely not "over my head" when it comes to Italian history. I've read of atrocities committed by the fascists. Murders, massacres, beatings. First of political opponents in Italy, then of foreign peoples in the wars from 1920s on. Not denying anything. I've never read about Sade-style perversities though. And calling Pasolini a "zany communist" is admittedly a glib exaggeration that shortchanges him on all his intellectual accomplishments as an author, etc. But on the other hand, that's my opinion of the movie Salo -- a glib exaggeration exploitatively designed to grab attention and bludgeon the movie's message into the viewers' heads. Pasolini may have said that's how Fascist Italy was, or that the movie was about fascist Italy, but millions of others would say living in fascist Italy was not like re-enacting a book by the Marquis de Sade. Ultimately this is just his opinion, not necessarily the unbiased infallible irrefutable historical truth. He's an artist expressing himself. Like Coppola saying Apocalypse Now was how the Viet Nam war was. Agree with him or not. I don't. So unless you can start pointing me to specific sources that relate stories of Sade-like abuses by officials during the Salo days, and I'm never adverse to educating myself further, then I consider the issue closed.

I'm one of the most bitter and jaded people I know when it comes to the current state of the movie biz (and at times the rest of Western society). mr_sinister7381,

Mr. Quint's knowledge of film is representative of our generation. We're close enough in age -- I'm 36. Instead of berrating him for the films he hasn't seen, he should be applauded for the systematic approach to watching more films of yesteryear in the heartfelt attempt to become a better film buff, reporter, and critic.

We are all of us born having watched none of these films, good or bad, and an earnest person with the love of cinema in mind can become a film buff at any age. As each new generation is born, how would you have them digest the tens of thousands of hours of film available to them? The cheeky yet honest answer is one at a time, taking from each whatever it has to offer.

And while there is some agreement on the top 50-100 or so films every enthusiast should experience, there will never be a definitive list for the next 5,000. Film is art. There is good, well executed and exemplary art, the classics that everyone heralds, and there is dreck, but it is all subjective.

We could argue for days, I imagine, about Jaws, for example. In my view and the views of millions of other fans, it is a perfect film. To many others it's a silly, plotless fishing story with bad special effects.

So beit.

you are filling in the holes in your film history knowledge, but it seems like it will be tough to watch a film every single day...you may not be in the right mood and won't give a film a fair chance due to that. But many of these great films probably draw you into their world regardless of your mood. Sound of Music is probably like the Wizard of Oz and best seen for the first time as a child and then later as an adult still through those childlike eyes, but maybe you will still enjoy it.

I'm 27 now, and I just can't do these shock movies now. I've done Salo (banned here in Oz, but surprisingly powerful), Romance and Anatomy of Hell (both depressingly one-note, anti male tirades), Ken Park and others. I'm really over this idea that a film featuring actual sex has to be brutal and depressing in order to justify its content. If anything, Shortbus was a real breath of fresh air, being upbeat, sincere and funny aimd all the craphic coupling. Granted, the version of Caligula I saw was the 2-and-a-half-hour version WITHOUT the hardcore bits. The uncut version is banned here in Australia.

"i just don't write articles about it" yeah, you'd just rather push it aside and pretend you have it all together when it comes to film knowledge you prick. There's nothing wrong with being a film snob, but have some respect for people who are willing to experience and write about the shit they've missed. There are a lot of films out there and i'll bet "five easy pieces" isn't the only important one you've missed. And who says what movies are important? Who do you go to to decide what makes your viewing list more "complete" than quint's or anybody else's? whose opinion do you trust to guide you toward good filmmaking from a complete unknown? I'd love to know. Many people use Roger Ebert, but ebert liked "The Happening" what names are on your list of guru's and i think we'd all like a complete list of their highly rated films from the past three years you fucking twat. It is impossible to define a list of "must-sees" because there is no fucking list except in your own head. And your list probably sucks to the vast majority of film lovers on this site and they will pick it apart and question your sanity for films you have or have not seen. The difference is, in this case, that you are not paid for your bullshit opinions so shut the fuck up and get off this talkback. You add nothing to the conversation because you have contributed nothing from your own life except the indication that you are a sad person with bitterness and judgementalism running through your thoughts. go back to eating your bag of dicks you fucking tool.

As for the visual quality - Salo always was the more visually sumptuous of the two.

what, exactly is funny or touching about Visitor Q. If it wasn't Miike (I even liked Happyness of the Katchakuri's for god's sake) you would be slating it.

It's repellent cinematic dogshit- the equivalent of an artist painting in Elephant dung, or menstrual blood (which has been done).

It's shock for shock's sake- and I really need convincing that it is anywhere near as good as you think it is. It's also dour, boring, incomprehensible, fragmented, and ill thought out. It doesn't hang together thematically, and the absurdities in it feel forced and unnatural.

No masterpiece, and probably miike's weakest film.

mr_sinister7381, does Quint think
by Big Jim
Jun 30th, 2008

"JAWS is the crowning achievement of film" or is it simply his favourite movie? There is a difference. A great movie is not always one you would ever want to watch again. Gone with the Wind is impressive and a must-see for any movie fan, but how many of us would watch it over and over again?

"The Elephant Man? Cool Hand Luke? Pappilion? The fact that you've never seen these movies is systemic of a Hollywood intelligencia that knows absolutely nothing about what makes good films."

Not having seen a select few of your "must-see" titles makes someone incapable of having an opinon on film? By that logic, can we assume that as long as somone has seen these films (even if they are the only films they have seen) their opinion must be valued above all others?

But I do agree that most executives wouldn't know a good movie unless the person whose ass they were kissing told them what to think of it. But then, Quint isn't an executive. He's just a guy with a cool job who writes about what he sees. He doesn't make the decisions in Hollywood, he comments on them (or at least, the end result of those decisions).

I am curious what you, and others who have been critical about what Quint has not yet had the time to see, what movies have you not seen? And by that I mean movies that would surprise your family or friends if they knew. I haven't seen most of the ones on Quint's list, including Papillon (but I will soon; it's #1 on my Ziplist). Others, off the top of my head include Raging Bull, Blue Velvet, The Seven Samurai, Ran, Dog Day Afternoon.

I have a soft spot for this film, having seen the unrated cut in a theater as a teen. I think it gets a bad rap, and is much better than it is given credit for. The acting is excellent across the board, especially John Gielgud. The music is very effective, and the film has a pretty "big" feel, even though the sets are far from realistic. The film is a mess, that's for sure, but it is a lovable mess, just the same. There really isn't a whole lot of sex in the film, but two scenes, the lesbian scene and the brothel boat, are excellent. The lesbian scene, shot by Guccione, is amazingly hot, as is the blowjob in the boat sequence. I have been told that the name of the actor who gets the BJ is Lucky Fellowes, but don't know if it is true. I must have seen this movie twenty times, and the Imperial Edition DVD is a great improvement over the original release. Caligula's sister is extremely cute and sexy despite the mustache, and even though Hellen Mirren doesn't do any hardcore, she shares some kisses with the sister that will make your 40 yr old dick feel like a teenager again. I haven't read it, but I understand that Gore Vidal's original screenplay had almost no heterosexual sex, and was just gay gay gay all the way. Not that there's anything wrong with it, but this is a majestic tribute to the full bush porn of the era, and if the purpose of porn is to get you hard (or wet) then Guccione succeeded.

OK- fine, I won't ever change your mind on the absolute lack of merit in Visitor Q. However, what I will do is point out to you that your argument about porn actually supports my point. Miike was commissioned to make an erotic/ porn film. What he turned in was "anti-porn"- necrophilia, incest, exploding breastmilk etc. This is the exact equivalent of the artist painting in elephant shit.

Just because it is provocative does not mean it is good.

And what about my other arguments about it's cinematic flaws? you don't address any of them, just some utterly subjective point about why you find it beautiful.

I said it had obvious artistic merit, and that is what you have explained. What it is, is a very, very well made piece of shit. Much as the Elephant dung painting was an amazingly constructed piece of shit (it did win the turner prize). I'm never going to convince you, but if you take a step back from it and look at it as a whole rather than a series of "moments" then it really is an absolute cesspit of a film worth only scorn.

Your previous post you said "The truth of the matter is that no one's really said anything pertaining to my comments. It's really funny to watch you cattle line up to suck Quint's dick. What a cult of personality this site is. But as for substance, there's been nothing. What a surprise."

So I asked questions related to some of the things you said and all were able to come back with a condescending comment.

My point, in case you missed it, was that no one has seen every movie made. Everyone has at least some films they have yet to see; films that would be considered by most film fans as "must see movies". I asked you what yours were and I listed some of my own. You replied with nothing more than a snide remark. If that's the all you have to offer you can play with "big boys" all you like; I'll have adult conversations with the men.

so mr sinister is double threat guy

Yeah, Quint, Salo and Caligula would have made a hell of a pair of movies to watch for a festival. Salo isn't as terrible in terms of violence as most movies nowadays like Hostel or Wolf Creek or Ichi. What makes it stand out is the technical skill of making it and the attitude of the movie. It completely buys into the evil that people do. Very, very disturbing film.
