It is looking a bit Brosnan bond there, and I've never once managed to stay awake through any of those films for some reason. They're just too over the top and superheroish. Laser guarded vaults and the shit, that crap just bores the shit out of me. I like Bourne though, and I liked Casino Royale a lot. Here's hoping it's still 24esque and all.

...(not like other people on the internet), but Casino Royale was a dumb movie for dumb people.
The Brosnan-Bonds at least didn'T try to hide that they were silly, even if they were THAT silly, that nobody oculd enjoy them. But Casino Royale? Was the same shit. Dull action, Bond turned into an invincible Actionhero (Still fighting with a nail in the shoulder) and people think that the Torture scene was cruel and intensne, but NOT borrowed from a Jackass-episode, because the press kit said so.
Sorry, but Casino Royale is one of my most hated movies of the last few years (I only hate 300 more) and this doesn't look any better. For the next reboot they should at least look for a good actor.

the closer they keep it the classic sixties feel, the better. they should focus on character and tension and not just roll out action scene after action scene.
Originality is overrated...
by Finding Forrestal
Jun 30th, 2008
05:14:39 AM
All I'm looking for is a tough and charismatic Bond, visceral (and believable) action sequences, and a plot that stays within the conventions of the franchise without becoming self-referential. A simple revenge plot will do just nicely, with Bond working his way up the chain of command of some SPECTRE-like organization. A few cold-blooded executions would be nice. Keep the women gorgeous, the locations exotic, and try to subvert our expectations every once and awhile (e.g. "Shaken or stirred?" "Does it look like I care?"). Seriously, we're not reinventing the wheel here. Keep it simple.

05:19:14 AM
Why is it that the moment a character on screen shows up, all cold-eyed, with the killer-stare, the fanboys line up to call it the best thing ever? Yes, I see, Bond is cold-eyed, and he has the killer-stare. You don't wanna mess with Bond because he is BAD ASS. Yeah, we get it. He's even more BAD ASS than he was in Casino Royale, because now he's pissed because he lost his One True Love or some pathetic cliche excuse to be all Cold Eyed and BAD ASS. And it looks like Bond is going rogue for two movies in a row? Great. Will M forgive him at the end just because he flirts with her a little? This is the kind of action hero I root for the bad guys to take down with extreme prejudice. Bond has always had a tinge of right wing, extra-legal nastiness to him, and this seems to be the most right-wing and nasty of the Bonds we have seen so far. Yahoo! Let's worship Thuggish Assassins in Suits! It's just one sign of the end of Democracy as we know it.

a great example of how to revamp a classic character by keeping the old parts that work and immortalized the story, while making little changes to adapt to a new audience. And I don't much think they are bringing back too much of the last one. This looks a lot different to me, which is great. Although another parkour scene would be the cat's pajamas.

I do. I really do. It's a variation of the Connery Bond, where you identify with a character who seems to have no fear. It's liberating to vicariously participate in being Fearless. But there's something about this Bond that bothers me, and it's the fact that the element of being SCARY (Feared) is way up there, and I'm more afraid of Craig's Bond than of the villains.
Okay Moriarty, I got your point.

Brosnan films were woeful. Still think bringing in big name directors would be a great idea. Directors like Scorsese, Spielberg and Tarantino have all expressed at one point or another a desire to direct a Bond fim. They tried it with Mission Impossible but then went for directors who would say yes to tom cruise all too easily.

1) The Bond movies re-vamp and re-invent themselves to fit the style of the times, and Craig has said that the film will have a bit more humor than the last one; 2) You're going to get the brainless action and cool shots instead of the character development in the trailer cause that's what trailer's do. If they showed 1 1/2 minutes of Bond talking, they would sell fewer tickets. 3) In my humble opinion, there's nothing scarier than having my nuts beaten mercilessly by a 5lb. knotted rope. Diff'rent strokes for diff'rent folks and all, but that would make me talk. And that's the highlight of the new Bond films - no more super death lasers and shark pits. Sometimes action/adventure is as simple as a man who really wants to hurt you.

I agree! Casino Royale was really great. But the villain was WEAK! I know he was accurate to the book and supposed to be second tier to the intrigue... but I want to see someone who truly outflanks Bond. you complain about unrealistic action-hero stuff like fighting with a nail in your shoulder, but seem to be in favour of some elaborate and ridiculous moustache-twirling-villain torture when the film was trying to make the specific point that such things are silly when it's 'the simplest thing in the world to cause a man more pain than you can imagine'. If you think that was such a non-terrifying thing, let's see you volunteer to have your balls whipped with a three kilogram lump of very solid hemp.

Ok, so you seem to want more scary ball torture (I'm not judging you, but you may want to talk to a professional about this), but you fail to grasp that this scene is taken from the book 'Casino Royale'. Who cares if you see more things on Alias.... When converting a book to a film its usually considered correct to transfer the key scenes as they were in the book.

The torture scenes in Alias were more effective than Casino Royale's? Did you see some unaired episode of Alias the rest of us missed, because that show had the lamest, most ineffectual 'tortures' ever. A box of needles? Ooooh. Casino Royale was smart, visceral, and revived a franchise that by all rights should have turned into a relic some time in the mid-eighties. And for the few on here complaining about Bond's characterization: Fleming's Bond was always a thug in a suit, a misogynistic assassin. He was practically a rapist for fuck's sake. Hate it or like it, don't complain that this isn't Bond. Go drink a big glass of ball sweat to fortify your faggotry, and stick to watching the movies where Roger Moore minces about with his double chin flapping in the breeze.

...May end up being the star here. The burnt out stuff looks fantastic: back to the 60's Bond, but with Craig giving a gritty edge - somewhat like a 60's/70's French gangster pick - or just a little like the French Connection. It's fair enough that a teaser focuses on the action, but there's promise of darker character exploration too. I certainly hope so.

It's difficult to find new and compelling storylines for every new Bond film. That said, this looks like it's doing a pretty good job.

The idea of Bond going solo on a revenge mission with his own orgainsation trying to thwart his efforts contains obvious echoes of the BOURNE series. But I'm more than interested to see how this all works within the context of the Bond franchise.

While CASINO ROYALE was a very good Bond film, it did suffer from certain flaws, particularly during the first half of the second act. My hope is that QUANTUM OF SOLACE will be able to rectify those wrongs to produce a top notch Bond.

Are they bringing back SPECTRE?!

From that interrogation scene it looks like they're bringing back SPECTRE. If they can make SPECTRE nice and sinister again, a la OHMSS (my personal favourite Bond film), it would be quite an achievement since other Bond films made SPECTRE so cartoony. Will we see a reimagining of Ernst Stavros Blofeld? Will they continue with continuity eventually have remake OHMSS with Bond getting married? Will Blofeld have his white kitty cat? Will it lose all its hair and be named Mr. Bigglesworth? I'm trés excited about the prospects...

I loved Casino Royale, thoroughly entertaining, great action and Craig was excellent.

I HATE all the old Bond movies, they just never interested me and were camp and annoying beyond belief. The conventions that fans love, I loathe.

The Bourne movies are the best thing to happen to the Bond franchise in a long time, forced them to re-evaluate their stale old quirks. CR was action packed and fun without being too much of a lift of Bourne. This one has shots blatently ripped from the 3rd Bourne flick, so at least they're acknowledging their influences.

Oh, and Bourne would easily dispatch Bond, even in CR Bond was lost without his OTT gadgets such as the portable defrib. and Poison kit in his car. Bond is a pussy compared to Bourne, you'd find Bond afterwards with a broken neck and a rolled up magazine jammed up his pooper. FACT!

I remember being psyched with the trailer for Casino Royale... Seemed very gritty, raw.. HE dirves around the corner, there is a girl in the road, he swerves, barely misses her, and then a spectacular crash! ....of course when I saw the movie, I saw this device created a giant plot hole. OK his girl is grabbed when she leaves the empty restaurant (they could of just brabbed him too), Craig gives chase, and in the car chase, the girl is suddenly in the middle of the road. Is it so they could lose him? nope, they were needing to capture him to torture him for info. Well atleast the girl was expendable right? nope, they needed to torture her for info as well. So as they need both of them alive, one is placed in the middle of a road, hopefully to cause a wreck, and the other ifs forced into a spectacular wreck.. yep that makes sense. sorry to go off there, but I hear such praise for Casino Royalle, and I thought it was fun, but had such plot holes in it that it really ruined it for me.

Bourne vs Bond
by toadkillerdog
Jun 30th, 2008
08:33:33 AM
Damon really grew up in the role. The last movie being the most believable - because of the age of the character and the obvious weathering Damon/Bourne underwent. But Bond is not Bourne or vice versa. Bourne has almost no personality. He is simply a rogue robot who wants to be left alone. Bond, is almost a sociopath, almost but not quite. But he will sacrifrice anyone to obtain his goals, whether they be Queen and country or his own. As for who would win a physical battle, since a tie is out, I give it to Bond. Bourne has greater fighting skills than Bond, but Bond is more ruthless, and resourceful, and ultimately, he will find a way to win. He always does.

Craig is fantastic as Bond, the second best all-time to Connery.

The early Connery Bond's had the menace and the charm, and not many gadgets, if any at all. The more popular the movies became, the more gadgets were involved, and the less menacing Bond became. Craig has restored the menace - he still needs to work on the charm though.

I was with EON on their decision to cast Daniel Craig, I was with them when they decided to re-vamp the series, changing the global scenario from Communism to Terrorism. I was impressed and delighted with Martin Campbell's direction of "Casino Royale," and was waiting to see how the next film would play out. The rumors started pouring in, this one picks up 30 minutes after CR left off, more action, great villain. I thought it was too good to be true, but the trailer succeeded in confirming I will be there front and center on Nov. 7th and will be prepared to be blown away!!!!!!

The Bond franchise seems to be patterning itself after onscreen Batmans over the years. We had our farcical 1970's Bonds who escaped from some absurdly characterized criminal mastermind and then we had our over the top action Bonds and now we're going back to the dark, gritty, emo Bond.

I'll wait for November before totally blowing my wad, but looks like my reservations about Marc "Neverland" Forster have been at least partially alleviated. Because this teaser looks, sounds and smells fucking neat.

Let's just hope the script doesn't blow, and that the 2nd unit work (which looks fantastic) blends perfectly with the character moments. That was the main downside of the recent Bond movies (except those directed by Campbell) and I hope they fixed that. Oh, and no excessive, gimmicky, non-visceral shaky-cam which is a big plus in my book.

It's simple. Roger Moore was wishy-washy. Pierce Brosnan's version what too goofy, over-the-top, phony complete with cartoon physics. This Bond is bringing tough-guy to the franchise. I don't care if they compare it to Bourne. In fact, that totally works for me especially since it's Bourne minus the wishy-washy poo-pooing the government angle. Hollywood seriously lacks tough-guy characters/actors these days. I say, bring 'em on!

this may count as potential SPOILER so beware - but I read that the organisation the guy works for, who have "people everywhere" is SPECTRE-like, but actually called QUANTUM. Daniel Craig said: "QUANTUM is also the name of the organization in the film; a kind of new-age SMERSH". So whilst I would have loved to see an all new badass SPECTRE, with the possibility of a return for Blofeld - I think this idea is really nice and also helps explain the title a bit better. Furthermore, doesn't mean we can't still have a recurring bad guy in the shape of the head of QUANTUM to rival Blofeld for the new reboot(or even cheekily BE Blofeld). Also, for what its worth, I thought this trailer was fantastic and I can't wait for the new film. Casinon Royale was brilliant, I revisited it recently on DVD and I was reminded just how polished that film was - I wasn't even as bothered by that awful theme tune. It is a great Bond film (not to say a great film full stop) and this one is looking just as good.

...like that, but that silly rope AND the fact that right in the next scene he was already having sex with the Bondgirl again (Hey, nothing happened) took all seriousness out of the torture. People get their balls crushed like that in every 2nd comedy (and probably every single episode of Jackass). I'm sure non of you thinks that, let's say 'Police Academy', is difficult to watch, because you feel with the people who get their balls kicked,
And even IF it was on the novel, so where the killer pigs in 'Hannibal'. Just because it was written in the novel, it doesn't mean it's a good idea. And, what is more important, maybe it was written more convincing there, than it looked like on film.
Sorry, even the torturing in the opening credits of 'Die Another Day' was harder than that. (Even if you turn off the sound and don't have to listen to the Madonna song.)

Think Roger Moore's Bond goes to his wife's grave at the start of For Your Eyes Only, a reference back to On Her Majesty's Secret Service - but yeah other than that they never get mentioned. But this is the first direct sequel to a Bond film, as all the others have just been "the next chapter" in Bond's adventures.

Focus on the movie folks, not the title, who the hell cares. This movie is going to kick some major ass. It seems once a James Bond movies goes with a more thought provoking title, everyone gets their panties in a twist. The title makes complete sense, as well, they are taking the title from one of Fleming's short stories. At the end of Casino, Bond is heartbroken over the loss of Vesper. Quantum is all about revenge and then some. Hence the title, Quantum of Solace, Bond is looking for some bit of resolve to his broken heart, looking for answers. Dig people, dig!

Alias was a pussy show compared to Casino Royale... i started to hate and did hate Alias by the 3rd season, cause it never went anywhere and nothing exciting happened. Its typical JJ Abrams though... first 2 seasons good, then the rest turns into this giant ball of beetle dung... rolling downhill collecting more and more until its finally cancelled just to save face. Im sorry, but i cringe everytime i see someone get smacked or whacked in the nut sack, no matter what show it is... i like my balls and i dont like them even grazed in the wrong way... maybe your lack of balls makes it a non sensitive area for you.

Casino was a terrific reboot of the Bond franchise, and Craig makes a great Bond (although I'll admit that I has reservations about him when he was originally named as Brosnan's replacement). I enjoyed Brosnan's Bond, but the stories were mostly lame. Also, although Brosnan had a few moments of toughness, I agree that Craig is the only Bond who actually seems dangerous since Sean Connery (still my favorite). I hated Roger Moore's foppish take on Bond, and Timothy Dalton seemed utterly humorless (although admittedly potentially dangerous as well). George Lazenby had potential, but he never got another chance to develop that potential. So for now, Craig IS Bond!!!! And I'm looking forward to November 7.

The Bond in Casino Royale IS the real Bond, it was the exact interpretation of the character that Ian Fleming wrote about in all his books. Those are my thoughts exactly on the Bond's. It was a shame Lazenby was not given a chance, he would have grown into the role. Dalton had much menace, zero charm. Brosnan, had his finest moment in ois last film. He never really embodied the full menac that Connery possesed, the kind that could kiss a woman, and kill her in the next breath, but he had his moments. Craig, has that Connery menace. And I like how they are going into a sequel -that really gives Craig a chance to leave his mark on Bond like none since Connery.

Connery did 40 years before; the exotic European locales, the claustrophobic fist-fights, the high-level espionage, the car chases, everything. Hell, even The Bourne Ultimatum stole its Tangier rooftop chase straight from The Living Daylights. Oh, and this movie looks awesome.

The main difference? It takes some brainpower to get through a Bond film...Bourne is all flash and no substance. Unless you are talking the TV version, which was quite good.

More grit - what Bond has been missing for awhile - Connery was grit - Moore was good in his own way - Dalton brought grit, but was ignored - P.B. was a bit campy - but pulled it off - the stories just kinda B.S. with his Bond movies... But Craig - Craig is the grit... can't wait for this one!

If you love pretentious Jason Bourne clones and are fifteen years old I'm sure you'll think this is BADASS!!! or whatever the kids say. I'm still wondering if anyone ever plans to bring back the James Bond character. You know, handsome, refined, witty, inventive. A counterpoint to generic action meatheads like er, Daniel Craig's 'Bond'. Now we have some pug-faced muppet 007 running through walls and gurning. Don't even get me started on the idea that Craig resembles the incredibly suave, witty, pretty boy Bond played by Sean Connery in the sixties. Connery didn't take the role especially seriously so why he is compared to DC who plays every character as a homeless tramp who has just been injected with rabies or something is beyond me. In fact seeing as Connery was handsome and played the role in a somewhat jokey manner I'm amazed that all these new Bond experts haven't trashed him yet. And as for Ian Fleming. I honestly don't think that as he reached for his third drink of the morning at his West Indian retreat, adjusted his neckscarf and waved to Noel Coward that he suddenly had an idea about a musclebound, everyman, diminutive spy character who could be played by a man who looks like he has a brillo pad on his head.

... you're an idiot who probably didn't actually pay attention to the movie he was watching. I'm not saying you have to like it, but if you're going to type "AND the fact that right in the next scene he was already having sex with the Bondgirl again (Hey, nothing happened) took all seriousness out of the torture." then you should be aware that the next scenes involving Bond confined to wheelchair for weeks at a hospital recovering from both the car accident and the torture. I award your stupid ass no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

Cartoon B.S. lolol... ummm no - Cartoon B.S. was Grace Jones and A View to A Kill - and I loved Roger Moore - but View was about as Cartoon-like as it gets - Point is - Bond - as a franchise had run it's course... Craig/Casino took it back to the grit of Connery - and thank god they did - it was time for a change - and the change has been good - attendance/money rule what allows a franchise to move forward - in Hollywood anyway - and Craig/writers/Director have given the Bond films a new life. End of that story. Star Trek has felt the same pain... it ran it's course - numbers down - and hopefully the new Star Trek will bring it back - like Casino did with Bond.

Craig fukken destroyed in CR. And for thise who say he was not suave, he was fukken LEARNING! He was a new 007. Not ready made out of the kukken test tube. You have to acquire the skills to be skilled!

And the greatest, grittiest Connery was the first three. Dr. No. From Russia with Love. Goldfinger.

Yeah - grit - as in Tone
by INDIETHIS
Jun 30th, 2008
02:00:46 PM
Yeah - Connery - grit - like he actually KIlled people - smoked - drank... I'm also talking tone... Roger - didn't really kill much - lots of knocking people out - and moreso - the tone became more campy - which was fine for a time - it was a change - a tonal cahnge - the last few Roger films then went a little camp far I think - ran it's course... BUt yeah - Connery was grit - he was mean - and he'd kill ya in a second - Pierce - Pierce played Bond between Roger and Connery - but I never feared Pierce's Bond... now Connery - screw with his Bond - and you'd be tossed out that train window with a bullet in your mouth. Craig - Craigs Bond is the same - major shift - tone and all - from Roger/Pierce... they tried this shift before - with Dalton - Dalton didn't crack jokes and all - he just didn't stick - I think the stories...

I was trying to imitate the Liberalwarrrior, but my point was that Connery was the quintesential Bond, in that he combined the qualities of suavity, menace and charm, into the complete package. Fleming wanted Richard Burton, who was not exactly a pretty boy to play the role. So Craig is actually far more in tune with Flemings wishes than any of the Bonds. Craig still has a ways to go to acquire the charm, and he may never rest the mantle from Connery - who could? But, he is already worthy of top two consideration.

Agreed ToadKiller - great point - Connery was able to combine all those characteristics in his Bond - it will interesting to see if Craig/writers/Director can pull a bit more charm/suave from him - not sure it's needed as the film did really well - but - to catch up too Connery - he would have to tackle that last bit of character trait into Bond - and still do it in a way that's new - and not just re-treaded. I'm just glad they shifted the tone of the franchise and brought it back out of the "camp" phase.

What makes Bond unique, and not just another robotic Bourne, is the fact that he posseses all of those characteristics that Connery was able to infuse. Craig is great already, and will only get better. I think by the third picture, you will see more of the polish that Bond is famous for. And that makes perfect sense, considering that the Craig Bond is still in the learning phase. It is very good to be excited about Bond again. Batman and Bond were the first two heroes that really liked as a kid - along with Lancelot Link Secret Chimp that is!

I would pay big money to see Link on the big screen!

I liked GoldenEye, but not as much as Tomorrow Never Dies, or Dr. No. The reason being, I thought he was trying too hard in GoldenEye. Too hard to be both suave and menacing. And Brosnan, just does not have the physicality for menacing. That being said, by the time TND came around, he was far more comfortable in the role. He had mastered it. And I thought he had even overcome his slight build, to make a believable action Bond. In short, he pulled it all together in his last Bond.

When I watched CR I felt for the first time the true James Bond was onscreen. I suppose he just fits a certain vision of Bond that I myself and many others share. I don't understand the name? This movie is not based on am Ian Fleming Novel as I understand it so where did they get the story and that awful name? When I saw the post on Digg, I thought it was a Discovery Channel / IMAX flick or something so I had a delayed reaction but then once I realized it was Bond...and then watched the trailer...FUCK YEAH!! Bond is back Baby!! And can everyone stop with the Bourne comparisons please?!? Bond = British Secret Agent. Bourne = American Secret Agent. COMPLETELY FUCKING DIFFERENT!! Bond = Aston Martin. Bourne = Raggedy Ass Mini Cooper. Bond = Banging Smoking Hot Bitches. Bourne = Hooks up with one kinda cute girl and then whines about losing her for the next two movies. Bourne = Shaky Cam. Bond = No Shaky Cam. Bond = Sweet Gadgets. Bourne = A Cel phone, a stick of gum and a paperclip. McGuyver Style. This new Bond would hand Jason Bourne his Ass in a fight. And there is no CGI. Didn't anyone catch the on set accidents while they were filming in Italy. I think one stuntman was killed. Stuntmen aren't killed in CGI movies.

Why not Ken Watanabe? But I do not think it needs to be remade. That was Bond in his element - in the west Indies - which is another reason why the Craig Bond was great. Putting Bond in the Carribean as well as Europe. Bond always worked best in those locales. Bond in Miami was great too - even though he wound up in Kentucky!

this will be awesome! That's an awesome trailer, the action looks more intense than Casino yet still within the realm of realistic action unlike earlier Bonds. The fact that it is a direct sequel is outstanding. This looks like first class stuff, I'm fucking happy as hell that the studios are actually taking Bond seriously again. That franchise felt like it was driven so far into the ground there was no hope, but then comes Daniel Craig and it's all better, what a recovery!

And after this so-far shitfest of a movie year (Iron Man excepted) The Dark Knight looks like the only thing to see this summer (ok I'll see Wall-E too) and the year can atleast end well with Quantum...hopefully it lives up to the trailer

BullSHIT. If that's bumbling and incompetence, what the fuck do you call guys who CAN'T single-handedly take down a Bolivian embassy. And it's refreshing that Craig isn't some metrosexual pretty boy; he looks like a pug, like a brawler. Anybody who says he isn't Bond doesn't know Bond from a fist up their ass. You know who WASN'T Bond? Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan (not his fault). Craig's better than Connery, who, cool as he was, can't act worth shit, had a Scottish accent, and was an inhuman adolescent power fantasy; at least this Bond, like the literary Bond, is an actual man that can get hurt and come back shooting. Jeff Albertson-- maybe, just maybe, you're not much of a judge of what charisma is. If you were, you might be able to acquire some. Dicksuck.
