I think Ratner's "internet" promise may come back to haunt him if the studio heads or Murphy himself force the issue and make it PG-13. I would love to see Eddie return to stand up but I'd also like to see him do a Hard "R" action flick like the old days. I'm guessing that Ratner is talking out of his ass no this one from feeling the heat online. It really would be fascinating to watch Murphy return to stand up. I really wish that Tony Scott was directing the new Foley film though.

Bad Boys 2 is the best ACTION film ever made...Period. I don't care what anyone else has to say about that. I love a good art house film as much as the next person but the way Bay blows shit up in that film is a thing of beauty and I'm hoping that Tranformers 2 will feel more like that than say The Island (which isn't as bad as many people say - and certainly wasn't bad enough for Dreamworks to throw SJ under the bus when it was released a pretty shitty thing to do.) I want more action films like Bad Boys 2. Ratner if you're reading this...Thats how you can win back some credibility. Bring on the non-stop action. The problem I have with Hollywood is the scripts for action films are generally shitty and then they wimp out on the action. When I go to see a romance I want to fall in love. When I go and see a comedy I want to laugh. When I go and see a drama I want to be moved. When I watch a horror film I want to be scared. When I watch and action film I want to see guns blazing and shit blowing up real good. Thats all I want. I'm guessing that very few of you on these boards have ever seen William Witney's great serials like Spy Smasher. Those films have more action in them than any films being made today and the stunts kick serious ass. I'm 28 eight years old and now I'm having to go back to films from the 40's to get my action fix...That's how pathetic Hollywood has become. The only movie that is going to live up to my expectations of what movies are all about is Dark Knight. Nolan has really been on the upswing and Kevin Smith and others referring to it as Godfather Part 2 makes me really happy. Can that movie come out any sooner? Hollywood get it together. Stop fucking around.

I'm not even sure it's the best Bad Boys movie ever. It's about half an hour too long. The whole taking the sister to cuba thing felt overextended. The second car chase with the bodies falling out the back felt too much. Trim the end and have it end at the mansion where it should have and cut out that second car chase and it would have been pretty great. that being said, I still think The Rock is Bay's best action movie. and best action movie is close race between Aliens, Terminator 2 and the original die hard.

No way, man. I love Aliens and Terminator 2. Aliens is arguably the second best sci-fi film ever made after Starship Troopers. Terminator 2 is a great film but there is no way near as much action in that film as there is in Bad Boys 2. What makes Bad Boys 2 so amazing is its non-stop set pieces. Thats what is missing from most movies nowadays. ..Set pieces. The cuba sequence in BB2 is an action orgasm. The bodies falling out of the vans is some of best anti-hollywood dark comedy I have ever seen in a mainstream film. The Rock is a great action film. But Bad Boys 2 never lets up. Thats what makes it the best. And the second car chase is amazing. No offense but it sounds to me like you don't really understand what an action film is supposed to be about. Its not about character. Its not about plot. Its about LONG ACTION SCENES.

Bad Boys 2 had some good action segments (actually blowing up cars on the freeway vs. CGIing them in later), but sucked overall. Die Hard is obviously the best action movie ever. I thought that was a given to pretty much everyone. Leafy is right that Aliens and Terminator 2 are close.

You said best action movies, not just which movie has better action. As a complete movie, Bad Boys 2 is just miserable. Not well written, not very funny, LOTS of boring stretches. Point Break is a way better movie, and in my opinion, the action is better cause it is more visceral. Maybe it is the way Bay shoots, but you never feel a thing during his action scenes. The man cannot direct for his life. The only good film he did was the first Bad Boys, and it is the comedy more than the action that made that film. But I dig you putting Last Boy Scout on your list, that's a great movie. But Die Hard 2, The Rock, Rambo 4, these were just bad movies with pretty weak action set pieces. The Cg blood in Rambo 4 was so bad, and the movie itself was nearly unwatchable.

Look as I said I knew most of the people on here would disagree with me. I'm just speaking my honest opinion. And no I'm not Michael Bay. I wouldn't mind if I was though. It would mean I get paid gobs of cash to watch incredible stunts, work with some of the biggest actors in the business and orchestrate that kinds of cinematic mayhem that few people ever have the chance to create. All the Michael Bay hate is ridiculous. The guy is a beast. I may not like every film he's made but the action is impeccable and films look damn good cinematography wise. I'd like to see some of you guys and gals make an action scene as good as what he does. Its fucking hard work and its why you don't see it very often because few directors in hollywood have the balls to orchestrate it.

My criteria for a great action film is the same criteria someone should have for a good porno. I watch action films for the action and the set pieces. Not the story or characters like I said. If you watch a porno film you're not watching it for the dialogue scenes you're watching it for the sex. And if it has more dialogue scenes than sex the film hasn't succeeded. That's all I'm saying. Michael Bay delivers the action in Bad Boys 2. Not in every film he's made but in that movie he does. He's one of the only directors working who delivers on what he promises...Action wise. Sure the scripts are generally terrible for his films. I won't argue with that. But he's action director and that's what he delivers. Transformers isn't a perfect film by any means but it has superior special effects and a lot more action than most mainstream movies.

Heat is a masterpiece. Collateral is solid. But I don't consider those action films in the purest sense. They are character dramas with great action in them. Not the same thing. For example Jonathan Demme's Something Wild has a surprising amount of entertaining action in it towards the end but you wouldn't call it an action or suspense film. Its a romantic comedy at its core and one of the best of its genre. Thats where I am disagreeing with many of you. A specific genre film should deliver on the expectations of what that genre is about. I think the scripts for Die Hard 1 and Lethal Weapon 1 are ten times better than that of Bad Boys 2. But action wise there is no comparison. Bad Boys 2 has more action and that is what I want from an action film.

Not sure why this turned into a Bad Boys 2 debate, but it's really not that great. It's way too long, it's main setpieces are ripped off from THE ROOKIE and POLICE STORY, and it just tries too damn hard. Like Michael Bay was so hurt by fanboys dissing Pearl Harbor that he threw in as many headshots as he could to appease people on this site, and ended up alienating everyone else. I don't hate it, though, and I'll watch it if it's on. But if you're talking the ultimate turn off your brain action movie, that's gotta be Con-Air. The Best Michael Bay movie Michael Bay didn't do.

Long Kiss Goodnight is also VERY underrated. I like pretty much anything Shane Black wrote. And Renny Harlin in his prime did some kick ass genre movies including Nighmare On Elm Street 4 my personal favorite of that series. Can't agree with you on Under Siege 2 even though I'm a huge Bogosian fan. Die Hard 2 is the better film for me because it has more action than 1 and the villains are pretty fucked up in that one. Sadler creeps me out. But the first Die Hard is visually perfect and its still Willis' best performance.

The REAL best action films, and in no order, are Die Hard, Aliens, Robocop, Terminator 2, Matrix, Rambo 2, The Fugitive, Lethal Weapon, True Lies, and The Predator. First Die Hard got pussified and now every action movie will. I have to agree that the action in Heat and Collateral beat Bay's stuff for me. Hell even the last gun fight in Miami Vice was well done. Bad Boys 2 had a lot of action but the violence didn't really mean anything till the last fight. The Cubans were the bad guys but yet the two big action pieces before it were against the KKK and Haitian gang bangers. It's just a random ass movie but I will say it is fun to watch.

Thats actually really funny that you mentioned Commando. I almost added that one. A definite guilty pleasure for me. Didn't put it on the list though because Dan Hedaya (an actor I normally like in everything) is extremely miscast in that film and turns in one of the worst villain performances in film history. But its one of Arnie's best films. I'm actually (dare I say it) a fan of Last Action Hero. Its a severely misunderstood film and an honest to goodness send up of 80's action film fare. I think what hurt that film was it went up against Jurassic Park which was so innovative at the time.

But it at least pretended to be a half-assed satire of James Bond. Bad Boys 2 was just a series of action sequences that couldn't be fit into other movies wrapped around two actors...you know, like the giant mechanical spider from "Superman Lives" that found its way into "Wild Wild West." The "outlandish 80's fare" that you canonize and lump Bad Boys alongside had quirks, character, and charm that the calculated and largely uninteresting Bad Boys series couldn't muster. Rambo, Riggs & Murtaugh, John McLane, Ripley...real heroes with depth, personality, and stories that you could get behind. I'm not taking you to task for ENJOYING Bad Boys 2...by all means do so. But don't elevate trashy above classy. Most of the films you listed below Bad Boys 2 (which you specifically labeled "the best" not "my favorites" which is what started the bombardment here) make their characters more interesting via plot and dialogue in the first 20 minutes than Bad Boys 2 could muster in 2 hours coasting SOLELY on Will Smith's ability to make shit dialogue at least fun to listen to. But anyway, I'm glad you have movies you like, so have a nice day!

Well, personally, I don't make much of a distinction between sci-fi action and "normal" action films, so long as the science fiction aspect (the heady stuff) is kept to a relative minimum. By that standard, T2, Robocop, and Predator are BARElY science fiction. As for Aliens and The Matrix, they were so filled with "real world" style action (marines making last stands ala thermopylae and fugitives and FBI agents kung-fuing each other) that I shoe-horned them into the list. Still, if you want an action film list sans science-fiction and fantasy elements, then it would be Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, True Lies, Bourne Supremecy, The Fugitive, Rambo 2, Under Siege, Lethal Weapon 2, The Dirty Dozen, and Heat.

or a character drama than action film. The tricky aspect of classifying Heat is that it has arguably one of the greatest "action" sequences in film history. But so does Children Of Men and I doubt many people on here would consider that an action film like say Con Air or Lethal Weapon. That is the point I've been trying to make. Just because it has action in it doesn't make it an action film. Its about what drives the film forward. Seven has some great action in it too...So does Fight Club...But they aren't action films.

Because what drives that film, more so than the action, is the comedy. Which means, of course, that Heat has to leave, as well. However, we have to put T2 and Predator back into the list, because obviously, action is the main drive of both those movies. Aliens is a bit shakey, so it stays out.

Fass, you're making very questionable distinctions here. I could easily argue that Bad Boys 2 is not really an action movie but a buddy cop comedy with lots o' action thrown in. To say Robocop, an action masterpiece, is more sci-fi than action film is disingenuous. When i think of sci-fi Robocop does not leap to mind, but when I think action it does. Tht being said, I agree with you on Last Action Hero, it's a really good movie and is actually quite witty with some great action. I think Cliffhanger is also a great action movie. And I would agree that Heat is not an action movie. Commando definitely needs to be on your list though.

is because it has as much action as comedy for film of its time. Keep in mind that originally Stallone was supposed to play the Murphy role. So, it was always intended as an action film. BHC is the same as Lethal Weapon it just doesn't have as much action. And neal2zod, Superhero films are superhero films. Just like Towering Inferno wouldn't be classified as an action film but as a disaster film like Deep Impact or Earthquake.

It's weird, The Rock shows up on alot of Top 10 lists here. Can anyone explain why? (Let's not even get into pro/con Michael Bay discussions). It's not a terrible movie by any means - the Michael Biehn/Ed Harris showdown is great, as is the Connery/Harris scene. But it's too silly to be taken seriously, and too serious to be "check your brain at the door" fun. (i.e. the villains' motive is sympathetic, which makes dispatching them in "awesome" ways not as fun as it should be) The plot borrows a bit too much from Under Siege, Escape From New York, etc.. The big car chase is HORRIBLY shot, doesn't really have much to do with the plot, and just seems like they needed to throw a car chase in there. Oh yeah, and Nicolas Cage is beyond obnoxious. The "rocketman" scene is the worst thing he's ever done.

...it's just a hugely entertaining film, with a great sense of energy, and also manages to maintain a strong balance of neither taking itself too seriously nor being too tongue in cheek jokesy. But the thing that really elevates it is the stellar cast line up, most of whom bring their a-game: Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage, Ed Harris, Michael Biehn, David Morse, John C McGinley, John Spencer, William Forsythe, and Tony Todd, amongst others. I just find it very entertaining. Action popcorn moviemaking done right in my books, and still the best thing that Bay has made as far as I'm concerned.

Hrrm, I think with these types of films, you need a really over the top villain and one on one fight with the hero and the villain, or the lead henchman, somewhere in the film to complete the package, unless its a really iconic enemy (Aliens). The Rock is a tough one to squeeze into that mold, you cant really count Connery's confrontation outisde the prison with Harris, or the fight at the end where the merc gets the ball of green shit in his mouth. You dont really get a good villain smackdown in the Rock, good minor henchman deaths (rocketman, twitchy, ball gag, but otherwise I think Rock suffers greatly in the big baddie department, which if your a stickler for genre conventions, keeps it a low scorer for me. Not that it isnt a wonderful movie, of course.

Eddie Murphy's career been on a downward spiral since BHC3 with minor blips coming up with Shrek and Dreamgirls. (I enjoyed Metro for what it was and he was the best thing in I, Spy). Isn't it amazingly coincidental that as they start talking about BHC4 suddenly he's not interested in acting in movies anymore. Come on, he thinks he's going to pull a Mel Gibson and get paid $35m for the fourth entry of a franchise. At least Mel Gibson was still a bankable star and is still a bankable name. Murphy is not. "You know, FOR KIDS!" idea, is that when you think about it, what was the most fucked up thing you saw as a kid. Probably was Alien/s, Beaverly Hills Cop, Demolition Man, Die Hard, Rambo pretty much any big hard R movie of the 70-80. And are cartoons were all Gummy Bears, Speed Racer, Inspector Gadget, TMNT more product placement then anything (Except Gummy Bears, unless it was for the candy?). The worst music we really had was NWA, or 2 Live Crew. Compare that with todays standards, the worst thing kids see today is shit like 2 Girls 1 Cup, movies like Hostel, just look at any top ten song list in the past 5 years and there is at least one or two terrible band with a song that degrads something, and cartoons that teach you nothing but to be violent...and buy shit. So in an age were kids are watching more and worse shit and hearing more derogetory stuff then most of us did as a kid growing up, shouldn't a movie for kids be a hard 'R' anyways? Kids now a days have easier access to more messed up shit, so lets piss off the adults and make one of the most 'R' rates comedians ever and make him a kids figure. By that the should say that they are making a movie for Todlers.

I disagree with some of your choices, the others, I have no opinion on because I either have not seen them, or they never interested me. 1. The Exorcist - Scared the crap out of 1970's audiences that had never before seen the depiction hidden, and mystic Catholic ritual, and in a battle against a possesed child, combined with horror and gore - at least not in a well made, mainstream movie. It still holds up very well, today, as for not being scary, well, that is subjective, but the images of Regan doing the broken back spider walk down the stairs (In the directors cut)are still very vivid. The Catholic imagery alone, for the true believers, was enough to send them to church in droves. You have to put things in context. In the 30's Dracula and Frankenstein were frightening. Now, though they are still very good movies, they do not frighten. The 70's horror was owned by Exorcist. 6. Mash - Very funny, satiric and subversive flick. However, the TV show, at least the first three years, actually was even better - if nowhere near as racy. 8. Dirty Harry - A true classic. Exploitation does not make it bad. It deserves the classic status. Not a great movie in terms of writing or acting. But impact was undeniable.

Just be the Axel Foley from BHC 1&2, and have a good story. I agree that it is one of the best horror films that I have seen in the past few years. A beautiful film. Yeah, the Kiri kiri kiri part drove me nuts the first time I saw it, scared the shit out of me, just the innocent glee of her voice juxtaposed against what she was doing. Sheer genius. Eli Roth couldn't pull that off if his life depended on it
