x-files was always incredibly boring, convoluted, and hammy. i was glad when it jumped the shark. i saw the movie and i was glad it sucked so bad they didn't turn it into a franchise. i will be glad when this movie bombs and goes away. only the diehards are going to see this, and frankly, the world would be better if a black hole opened in every theatre opening night and sucked all the fans into a space time continuum where all the x-files questions were answered and the resounding response was "lame".

...but earlier trailers showed that Amanda Peet's FBI character has brought Mulder back into the fold to help crack this new "spooky" case, and he drags Scully along with him ("I'm done with chasing monsters in the dark"). And yeah, that sounds like Mitch "Skinner" Pileggi at the end. Hope he shows up, as it appeared he was going to get iced by "Supah Soljahs" in the last ep. And where the hell are Doggett and Reyes?

Robert Patrick deserves props. Season nine had a *few* decent eps ("Daemonicus", "4D", "Aubrey Pauley"), but overall it should have ended with M&S kissing over baby William at the end of eight, although the reappearance of CSM at the end of the final episode was pretty awesome...

It was what made the show stand out, the reason why many remember it, and why other tv shows try to emulate it. After the 1st movie it became incoherent and pointless. Thankfully this movie will have nothing to do with it.
Stand-alones Blow
by Ky-El

Why does every critic keep saying they liked stand-alones better? You want stand-alones watch CSI or any medical/law show on crap TV. We've waited years to get some closure from the extremely open ended, not at all conclusive finale and they give us a stand-alone movie? Call me bored. Mythology episodes of any show are always better that stand-alone (*cough*)filler (*cough*) episodes.

Stand Alones were filler?

i know it seems like the myhology was all encompassing (man i probably mispelled that) but in reality there were maybe 6 or 7 episodes (if that) a season dedicated to the mythology. dont get me wrong, i've always preferred the mythology too but to call stand alones filler is a little extreme considering they made it easily 80-90% of the series.

If this movie is even half as good as it needs to be, it might end up being a surprise smaller hit on the heels of Dark Knight. Honestly, even big amazing movies seem to only have one BIG weekend these days, especially in a summer where big tentpole flicks are coming out, 2 at a time on any given weekend. So, there might be space in the wake of Dark Knight for X-Files. It probably doesnt need to make a ton of money either to break even, and if it gets good reviews coupled with a decent box office, and the eventual good dvd sales(even if it isnt great)I can totally see them making another. I think the reason you are seeing this so late after the original series is because they are testing the water for me. I just hope it's a good story. The real bit of concern is that you have 3 really geekly, potentially awesome properties coming out within 3 weeks of each other, and all of them need to be successful for any future installments. Though I hate to admit it, I fear more for Hellboy 2's safety than either TDK or XF2. And yes, I think HB2 will be brilliant as a movie, but that doesn't always equate at the box office.

As for the guy talking about "from the creators of XFiles" being like "the makers of X1 and X2", that has already happened this summer, when The Mummy 3 trailers announced with astonishment and pride "from the producers of the mummy and the mummy returns."

yea, big wierd typos up there..

While Craig seems like a nice enough guy, and has that typical Scotish humor I don't think it works well with a late night show. I think Billy Connely would be funnier. Still can't believe he did Fido.

The "conspiracy" episodes only totalled about 60 episodes out of TWO-HUNDRED. If anything, the conspiracy shit was just to keep people watching during sweeps periods. I'll take "Home", "Humbug", "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose" and "Squeeze/Tooms" over all of that black oil shit. They spent two hours tryong to explain the mythology in the final ep, and it was STILL incoherent (the Syndicate guys are dead, right? So, WHO'S RUNNING THE SUPAH SOLJAH PROGRAM?!). I'm THRILLED that the new movie will be a good, creepy one-off story. If it's successful enough to spawn another movie, THEN they can get bacl to the conspiracy shit, but for now, just gimme Mulder & Scully creeping around with flashlights, and I'll be happy.

I was a tremendous fan during my teen years, but I find the series has not aged at all well; the direction and cinematography were of a very high standard for TV of the time, sure, but the stories are generally pat and unsatisfying. There's only so many times you can get away with the bold downbeat ending where the monster gets away or the conspiracy can't be proven before it ceases to be bold. Also, received wisdom is that the standalone episodes were the better ones, but with notable exceptions, it was pretty much the same tropes over and over again: Scientists Find Something Nasty, Serial Killer With Special Abilities, Small Town With Hideous Secret... Anyway, considering the way the show went out in a blaze of apathy six years ago, I'm a little surprised that anyone is looking forward to this (let alone Beaks, whom I depend upon to have higher standards than I do).

For those on about Season 9 - one episode there probably ranks as one of the best eps of all time - "John Doe." Too bad so few were interested at that point. Robert Patrick actually did a great job in a difficult situation; the fan base just didn't want to see Mulder go (but given how badly Duchovney phoned in seasons 7 and 8, I don't see why - Season 7 things were the X-Files comedy hour with genies, Will Sasso, the COPS spoof X-COPS, and William Gibson butchering his own genre in F.P.S.). My disdain for season seven and Duchovney's ego-tripping aside, I'll be there opening weekend.

by hank henshaw

The most contrived and ill-conceived chapter of the conspiracy was originally ran by the aliens. The, very stupid, plan was to abduct humans, return them dead and wait several months for them to come back to live as unstoppable killing machines (with one weakness, kryptoni... er, magnetite). It later seemed that it wasn't the aliens running the supersoldier program, but the supersoldiers themselves. Or the supersoldiers were aliens too, just not the gray shape-shifting aliens. I don't really know. I don't think the writers even know what was all that about, or cared. Harvesting humans and repopulation via black oil was a more straightforward plan, I think... stupid aliens.

I always enjoyed the inclusion of the Lone Gunmen. In a way they were like fan surrogates. Geeks and nerds who never entered the field but knew everything (and more) about the X-files. The series was cancelled prematurely and many episodes were actually more entertaining then the final episodes of the X-files. I hope the Lone Gunmen characters get at least some small nod of recognition in this movie.
Yeah, killing off the Gunmen was downright MEAN
by Nasty In The Pasty
Jul 2nd, 2008
11:01:50 PM
Just because a show is ending does NOT make it okay to just start killing off supporting characters willy-nilly! There's another reason seasons eight and nine didn't appeal to a lot of fans...no more cool villains! Krycek appears at the end of eight just to get gunned down, and CSM didn't reappear (after getting thrown down a flight of stairs at the end of season 7) until the very last ep (GREAT send-off, though). A conspiracy is only as good as the "face" that's put on it, and CSM was the Darth Vader of the X-Files. Kind of why the Star Wars prequels didn't match the OT...after Darth Maul was killed off at the end of Phantom Menace, you had NO CENTRAL VILLAIN. It was just a bunch of nebulous conspiracys that kids could NEVER follow.
Good stuff!

are you seriously saying that the x-files went away "too soon"? if anything, it didn't go away soon enough. it was a great show when it was great, but it lasted 2 or 3 seasons too long and blew the chance to wrap up its mythology in anything resembling a satisfying manner.
