I wonder if it will cover the rape of not only Iriqi women but women serving in the military.

I wonder if the theft of Iraqi property by US sildiers will see the light of day.

I wonder if overt and casual racism of US soldiers toward the Iraqi people will be addressed.

I hope the illustrate the continual murder of innocent civilian women, children, and men.

If you think any of the above is made up or propaganda you haven't read the news for the last couple of years. Nor have you seen the Winter Soldier hearings.

Even better that weakness of the voluntary military was pointed out in Buffalo Soldiers. At least with a draft you had the chance to recruit the best and brightest and those with a strong moral compass. Now you get gang members and those who rape the fellow soldiers.

Gone are the social examinations we saw with Viet nam movies. Now the military has veto power on scripts and themes.

Probably the only thing on HBO I give a fuck about this year...

The book was great, and I even received a couple emails from Evan Wright after I wrote a review of GK for my college paper, he seemed like a fair person and I found the book very pro military. What I found distressing was a producer saying the movie, "Doesnt take sides." WTF? You going to make a movie where radical killers target children and civilians to reinstall a dictatorship or Islamic Republic on one side and the USMC on the other and "Not take sides"? Pathetic, last couple of generations have no idea what it means to be an American and what patriotism means. It's sad you cant have a movie about the military without throwing in dival about "right and wrong" or whether leaders "lied". Like I said Americans arent taguth history and what they are taught it paints America as the bad guy.

You do realize there is something call moral ambiguity? Not everything is black and white. While I side firmly with the culture of the US, there is denying that both sides have done horrible things in this war (that never should have been started in the first place).

Amazing how they all( and presumably with no actual military experience themselves) are all jumping onboard and saying how honest and truthful this is as a portrail of the war and those waging it. Any chance to slander the young men over there and the socialists just glom on while still of course wearing their yellow ribbons and saying how they suuport the troops. These shitheads are the same ones that threw shit at our returning Vietnam vets and called them baby killers and couldn't wait to pump up John Kerry into some voice of truth and morality without actually first checking the facts or those that served with them. All those anti-war (But equally anti-military personal) films that made a combined $5.00 at the box office. But of course they support the troops too. See of course the truth as they see it is that anyone who joins the military is either a dumb uneducated hick or some poor taken advantage of minority. How fucking elitist and insulting. There are too dumb to know better???? I have a couple of veteran friends who recently got back. Both college educated. One being one of Chicago's top civil engineers and the other a decorated Chicago Cop whom I went to college with. I really hope we do bring back a draft and the first ones to go are the Eastern European socialist anarchists in the New York, L.A. and Frisco Media, the next can be the legislators and there sons and daughters who would wage war cavilierly and finally the little faggots who think they are in UFC but not actually in UFC by getting a buzz cut and some bad tribal tattoos and wear a tapout shirt. Remember When Hollywood Had Heroic Soldiers?
by DirkBelig

03:05:17 PM
In less than 40 years we've gone from Patton to this sh*t. It's been only a handful of years since Black Hawk Down and that film seems as old-fashioned as a John Wayne flick. Now, we get film after film smearing the soldiers (e.g. In the Valley of Elah), lying about the military (e.g. Stop-Loss, everything else), and the government (e.g. Rendition), because the anti-American fascists who live lives of posh luxury on the Left Coast don't realize that without these soldiers and government, they'd be lying dead in the street with their throats cut by Islamofascist terrorists, like the one who killed Theo Van Gogh.

Assholes like Tim Robbins, Sean Penn and Michael Moore, trot around the globe, fellating tyrants like Castro and Chavez and then trash-talking Dubya (note: I'm not a fan) while nearly dislocating their shoulders patting themselves on the back over their "brave speaking truth to power", as if Dubya was going have them "disappeared." If a fraction of what was said of Dubya was true, we wouldn't have slanders like Generation Kill being broadcast, would we? Sean Penn would've been sent to Gitmo and the NY Times and Washington Post would've been shut down years ago for their treasons in publishing national security secrets. How long would Penn, Robbins, Sarandon, Glover et al survive speaking out against Castro and Chavez if they lived there?

Wake me when they make the show about how our brave soldiers have been wasted by insane ROEs that turn them into sitting ducks. America has never lost a war that it actually tried to win. Dubya tried to run a "kinder, gentler war" with "compassionate warfighting" in some insane hope that the Treason Media would congratulate him for his restraint. We've gone from a nation that would drop nukes and firebomb Dresden to a bunch of chumps who prosecute GIs who dare shoot at those trying to kill them. They volunteered to fight for our country - LET THEM FIGHT! And for gawd's sake, lets knock off the anti-American propaganda until we've won and our troops are back home, please! Support Our Troops: WIN The War!

Anti American?
by Larry of Arabia
Jul 13th, 2008
03:05:39 PM
Are we still at the point where any criticism of the military and war are still considered Anti-American? When, after 8 years and a trillion dollars we still don't have Osama? When oil, which everyone in the administration said would be safe, secure, and around $20 a barrel due to this war is 7X that? When we've gone from being a bastion of freedom to having legal wiretapping of US Citizens without a warrant? When we've gone from a fighter for human rights to using ideas from the worst days of Communist China to get information? When we've lost credibility on all these issues in the world? When the average income in the US, adjusted for inflation, is lower than it was 8 years ago? I think we had to do something, but we didn't do anything the right way. We can't talk about these things in a movie or tv show, the news or a talkback because our freedom to criticize the government, as stated in the Constitution, is unamarican? Sorry, you lost the argument on September 17, 1787.

Are the Marine Commanders who recommend GK "socialists"?
by G100
Jul 13th, 2008
03:45:05 PM
I see there are a the usual Douchebags who don't have a clue what the book is about whining about unamerican defeatist leftist propaganda and showing their ignorance for all to see.

Despite initial doubts, Marine commanders later encouraged the officers of 1st Reconnaissance to read the book and the articles to get an insight into the reality of war.

Does that sound like it's some "socialist" "unamerican" political tract or that it shows the unvarnished reality of the chaos of war and it's effects ?

Can't wait to see how some of the characters are portrayed and without giving awway one of the books biggest shocks I wonder at what point the mini-series will divulge to the Marines what the REAL nature of their mission is.

Um Dirk, have you actually seen the movie Patton? Also, none of the guys I know who have served in Iraq (I work at a VA hospital) would EVER want to be portrayed as one dimensional heroes/martyrs for the sake of so-called pro-American propaganda. And as stated above, many vets (enlisted men and officers)have praised the book for its honesty and accuracy. So unless the miniseries veers off drastically , which apparently it doesnt, they should dig it.

I'm in my sixth year with the USMC. I'm proud to serve. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't think most of the people here in this TB have experienced it first hand. I've done two tours of Iraq and our unit is headed to the desert again next year. I bring this up to tell you that you are objectively full of shit. If you think we are being told to hold back and not fight, then please leave the country because you are not worth our sacrifice. It's insulting to come on here and have some idiot tell us that we're not "winning" because the President is bowing down to three liberal celebrities...or whatever your inane post said. I assure you that your type of political "discourse" doesn't exist over there. We're more worried about staying alive and fighting so you can all enjoy your comfortable lives arguing on the internet. I didn't mean that Patton was portrayed as a shining god, but that he wasn't slandered as a evil warmonger who should've been tried for war crimes for daring to defeat those hawmwess widdle peace-wuving Germans. And he slapped someone?!? Gadzooks! Off with his head!!!

BTW, you dumbasses complaining about gas prices and blaming Dubya are so up your arses, it's a joke. Gas prices have DOUBLED since Reid & Pelosi and their Democrats took back Congress and they refused to allow any exploitation of American resources because they'd rather have us fund our enemies than be self-sufficient. They also want Americans as poor and angry as they can make them so as to drive them into the Dark Ages that would be an Obama Regime. McCain sucks ass, but he's the Prince of Light compared to the naive criminal that is Barry O'Bama.

Most of you dopes weren't alive when Jimmy Carter brought economic ruin - ask your folks about what the "misery index" was - to our country and launched the modern era of Islamofascism and state-sponsored jihad with his handing over of Iran to the mullahs. Toss in his sellout of the Panama Canal (now under Chinese control IIRC) and we're in trouble. Elect Obama and you'll get that 2nd Carter term, but worse. I've seen the first five episodes of the mini-series. And while I thought it started off a little slow for my tastes, once I got used to the soldiers I started to forget that I was watching was fiction. The characters remind me so much of the average guy in my high school who went off and joined the Army. They have respect for their country and their job but they also just love to talk shit and be in the moment. The documentary-style approach helps blur the line of fiction and the soldiers duty to your country versus the duty of one human to another - no matter what country you belong to. I'm not normally a fan of raw, realistic war films but General Kill slowly grew on me and I definitely recommend you check it out.

there is so much wingnut bullshit you are slinging, but since this is an entertainment website, lets stick with the patton description...of course patton wasnt slandared, the movie was based on actual events...and it wasnt just the public slapping of a soldier that caused him problems, it was blatant disregard for the suthority of the supreme commander...as for the rest of your assertions, they totally disregard every other aspect of history, but at least you aint blaming clinton...oh, and i was around during the carter years...my parents could afford to send 3 children to private school on one salary, take family trips, send the kids to summer camp, and help us all pay for university...this on a retail salesman's salary....know anyone like that today?

HBO has Big Love, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Generation Kill, David Simon's next hourlong, Flight of the Conchords, The Pacific, True Blood, David Milch's cop show, the best documentary series around, Bill Maher, etc. - and you still have all these tired ass bitches complaining every season how HBO is falling off. I've worked in a lot of trouble spots alongside military guys from the US and several other countries, and the trailers gave me a lot of hope that we'd get a nice peek inside their world. For me, the best parts of the trailers have been the humor - during the long periods of inaction or routine, war zones offer HUGE potential for absurd comedy, and I'm glad that someone else both saw this and was not afraid to address it. It doesn't always have to be reverent like EVERY other WWII flick or tragic like EVERY other Vietnam flick. I was hoping for some kind of modern CATCH-22.

And having seen the first episode, I am cautiously optimistic. Yeah, it was a bit slow, but the trailers alone make it obvious that this will stay lively. I haven't read the book and I haven't looked into the background, so I don't even know the span of time that the 7 episodes will eventually cover, but the feedback above (thanks for not overtly spoiling things, by the way) makes it seem like it's worth staying for the rest of the ride.

Aside from liking it, count me as someone else who had a LOT of trouble keeping track of the characters. The buzzcuts and generic accents make it tough to distinguish about half of the guys from one another.

As for the issue of balance, I think the first episode already showed what the team meant by that - you get good people and bad people at all levels. Some commanders are obviously not cut out for their jobs, others are very protective of their soldiers. Some soldiers are racists and homophobes, others are decent and conscientious. The way the end plays out is as realistically balanced as you can get - you have a decent commander giving an immoral (and illegal) order, a reporter seeing it happen and hesitating, and another decent officer obeying the order and telling the reporter to go ahead and report what he saw. There is a lot of gray area in just that single scenario. I hope to see more events like this portrayed. It's not rah-rah at all, but it's not an indictment, either, unless you simply want to quote lines or situations out of context (which is easy but unfair). The characters who stood out in the first episode were distinguished by their complexity and humanity. Good job, producers.

That really pisses me off as much as a bunch of businessmen cooking up a reason to go to war for geo-political- financial reasons. Hammering us constantly with every minute negative of our troops conduct while ignoring their bravery, nobility and all the good things they have been forced to do is horseshit. I was pleased by GK last night in the portrail of the Marines, I found them to be noble, sypathetic and very nuianced.

Tell me who is "gleefully attacking the men and women serving our country." That is such fucking HORSESHIT. That shit is cooked up by the Republican spin machine to slander liberals and Democrats. If you can provide me with one example of an "aspect" of the "media" you think is happily bashing our troops I'll cut off my balls and hand them to you.
It's NOT fiction. Jeeeeesus ! Great so far though.

All the people portrayed in the series are real Recon Marines from Godfather to Colbert to Person. The reporter is the reporter who wrote the book, hence the series FROM the book.

It's closer to the book than I thought it would be but it does diverge slightly in places. THe one thing I was worried about was scale but none of it seemed "fake" to me and I have high hopes for th urban encounters if they keep this level of authenticity up. And BTW things get full on fairly quick so this isn't like Jarheads it's the polar opposite.

Some of the characters are startlingly close to their real life counterparts and Fruity Rudy IS the REAL Rudy Reyes !!!

You WILL get to distinguish the characters and the likes of Trombley and Person etc. will soon be well established. Likewise Captain America will soon be making people gasp with his sheer fucked up stupidity.

Actually some of the dialogue seems toned down at the Mo but no doubt we may yet hear much more of Person in full hilarious flow.

Those who think this will be a one sided portrayal of rampaging unthinking Marines are waaaaaay off the bat as there acts of real heroism and acts of startling humanitarianism amongst the carnage. And those who think it's going to skirt the civilian deaths and some of the darker side of the invasion are equally wrong.

If some of the colossal dumbasses spouting off about "Hollywood" can't handle the fact that this isn't the kindergarden black and white view of the world they themselves are limited by then I recommend they watch Hogans Heroes instead as that seems ideally suited to their intellectual and emotional level.

And before the Douchebags accuse the reporter of being some kind of bleeding heart wimp he was in the lightly armoured HumVee with the Marines when all this went down.

Finally, a fair portrail of the war!

I've avoided all of the Hollywood turd fests that have dealt with the war up until know because I knew what they were mostly liberal crap, just like I've avoided Fo New's special reports on the war because I knew they'd be conservative crap. This series, however, follows the book closely and the book paints a very fair and accurate portrait of the initial invasion and some of the men who took part, warts and all. It isn't black and white folks, there is plenty of grey area here and guess what? That's real life.

I liked john adams, the whole Thomas Jefferson subplot in which he was screwing his slaves was awsome. I love when they put interracial sex scenes in period piece films.

What is really gay is the fact that you took time out of your day to write me in hopes I would take you up on the offer. You fag

commenting until after I had a chance to view. After watching ep.1 Get Some last night, I can confidently say that I will be tuning in for the remainder.

To all you shitponies who were calling this "lib propaganda" BEFORE IT HAD EVEN AIRED, check your bullshit at the door. It portrays war as it is, as it has been and as it always shall be: shades of motherfucking grey.

I know, I know - you want black & white becasue it's so much easier to digest through your red, white and blue brain/colon, but there's 'reality-as-portrayed-through- your-favorite-fair-and-balance d-news-outlet' and then there's actual reality. History will tell the tale.

I didn't read the book, but I did read the short story-length original Rolling Stone articles, and Person was that obnoxious. Ziggy from The Wire couldn't have been better casting.

I was in the Marine Corps for about ten years, during the late 80s-late 90s. This is how they act. This is how they talk. There is nothing in the show that is unrealistic whatsoever. Good day, sirs.

(not the Fox News definition either...)

I tuned in expecting to tune out for episode 2...it started off being the Marine testosterone fest that I thought was gonna sadly be but then when they left Camp Mathilda it got decidedly real....I realized the first half they were just focusing on the soldiers that are war junkies in the first 30 minutes.

This show is great b/c it shows that all the soldiers are different with different perspectives and views and the war plays out in front of us through their eyes. It is pretty great to watch actually.

We get to see the racist mofos that like to make fun of the the surrendering Iraqis who can't understand them....and we get to see the Marines who are disgusted that they have to turn said captives away back to Saddam's death squads instead of helping them (nice touch that they encountered such a death squad earlier and had good intution about them but were ordered to let them pass...geez!)

So, yeah this series is gonna rock if it keeps up with this kinda multi-spectrum approach.

In the book it acknowledges he's not gay in the sexual orientation sense but the Marines call him Fruity Rudy because he's so beautiful. Simple as that.

BTW he wants to move to San Francisco because "there's no fat people there" and "Chinese martial arts are very much part of the culture."

He IS a Warrior though and you will see this. He is the units best martial artist & one of the strongest Marines. He lived in a Dojo and used to compete Nationally in Karate and Tai-chi as well as fighting in exhibitions with the Chinese National Team.

is because these fucking dirtbags, these fucking traitors to our country, these fucking reaganzombieites, know that there is no way to portray the war in a positive light...it is called cognitive dissonance...if they ever woke up from their collective stupors, then the scenes from the happening would be occuring in real life...led by fat el druggo taking a header off the eib building

Lived pretty damn close to Camp Pendleton for most of my life and have worked on base, and the kids in Iraq are just like the Marines I've known. Felt like I knew where half of the episode went just because of conversations I've had with peeps who did tours of Iraq. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

And really, the whole line about Saddam and the pussy infrastructure in Iraq was as classic as anything in this week's Venture Bros. episode...

Excellent first segment...

...and I'm betting it will only get better over the next six. I was interested enough to watch it again last night.

One thing I didn't see, thankfully, was any sort of political side-taking. I like the fact that it's just the soldiers in combat and no subtext attempt or any other biased blathering in either the right or left direction. Can't wait until Sunday!

As for the dialogue...
