Waaaaay too artificially "slick." The comic is so expertly, clinically, un-emotionally rendered that all of the stupid, forced slo-mo bullshit feels comically out of place (pun not intended), like a joke. This thing should have been shot like THE WIRE, the 300 aesthetic is completely wrong. Sure, it's cool in the "Hey, there's Dr. Manhattan being played by an actor!" Pavlovian-geek response way, but, judging from the trailer, this isn't the WATCHMEN movie anyone needs or should want.

Nite Owl's ship coming out of the river was fantastic. And I love the look on Crudup's face as he's in the particle accelerator -- he knows what's coming, but he's almost interested in what it's going to do to him. Fantastic trailer, exactly what you'd hope for in a first look. Plus, the mask DOES move...

Nixon or JFK?
by VomitousMass
Jul 17th, 2008
02:22:46 PM
IMDB shows actors cast as JFK and Jackie K but no Nixon! Did they change that for the movie? I guess it doesn't matter that much, or does it? (JFK alive illustrates "hey, this is an alternate timeline, dumbasses!" a bit more aggressively than having Nixon around I guess... slight change in the cold war vibe...)

Just read the comic and I do doubt that the depth and detail can truly be realized in the movie form but isn't that the case with all great literary translations? That looks very different from what I was expecting. I hate the whole fast-mo/slo-mo thing Zack does, but good God does Dr. Manhattan look PERFECT. I didn't think that was possible. Not sure I like Haley's delivery of that last line (I was hoping it would be a bit more...subtle and disconnected, I guess), but overall, I think it's turning out so much better than it could have.

Manhattan moving = GOLD! Perfect perfect perfect. Not quite as good? Dan (Nite Owl II) shouldn't look like a total bad-ass. He should have a bit of the old paunch. I can live with that, though. Rorschach looks great, the Mars scene looks great, mostly looks pretty damned good. It won't (can't) be the comic book, but it looks pretty damned good.

I cannot tell you how long I've waited for this movie (well, 20 years to be exact). And I wasn't expecting it to be so... clean. For frak's sake, even Rorschach looks squeaky. This story called for grainy and dirty, or at least Fincher-style lighting. But from this glimpse, thankfully it's a glimpse and perhaps I'm way off, it looks as though they've pasteurized the comic and made it clean (some will say CGI but WTF was Wall-E? Did that shit look clean?) Ooooooh, I did not want to be negative about this project, I really didn't. On the plus side, Crudup-Manhattan looks good, so does Ozymandias. The rest is utter unfinished CGI shit, too pristine for such a dirty, brilliant story. Insert vulgar expletive here, this looks so middle-of-the-fucking road it makes me feel bad! Gilliam, come back!

I have loved the novel since it was first released in comic form. I'm sure the film will ultimately let me down in many ways (like V for Vendetta, it almost hurts more when the story changes but the visuals are so faithful/pretty) but as far as giving the fans little peeks at things they want to see, this trailer delivers. Whatever suckage the film eventually offers, the original book will always stay the same. For sure one of the more re-readable books I've come across.

... a litle too studio-bound like Batman Returns, but I guess I shouldn't bitch. Seems like with CGI environments Snyder could've opened things up a little more. That scene where Ozymandias was attacked... in the comics, his corp[orate headquarters was this huge interior space, in the trailer it looked like the local office of some midlevel insurance agent. The scene on Mars looked like some diorama of Mars in a museum. But, I'll have to see how it all looks on a big screen this weekend when I go to see The Dark Knight.

So I couldn't give a fuck how successful this is or how well it fares on opening weekend. Hell - there ain't going to be a sequel! All I care about is the fact that Snyder appears to be treating the source material with the massive respect it deserves - with clearly encouraging results. If that deters cinemagoers who have not read the book and if Watchmen doesn't top $100m, big deal. More fool everyone else. Can't figure out what my favourite bit in the trailer is. Either the Comedian punching through the wall, Osterman being torn apart or the close up of Rorschach's mask. Nah, who am I kidding? It's Malin Akerman in tight PVC. Damn.

life just got soo much sweeter my friends. i cant get enough. if the dark knight is heat of the comic-movie genre, this is going to be legends of the falls meets fellowship with a splash of roundhouse kick to your nuts. i just started liking snyder alot more. it looks like he took each iconic image from the novel (all 5,000 of them) and managed to somehow translate them into film using his own style. and i love the slowmo fighting, its like a freeze frame from the novel.
Too Much Shiny CGI And The Theme Tune To Batman And Robin?

I liked the Mars sequence but otherwise I found it surprisingly dodgy. Perhaps the CGI shall be rendered some more? Also why tempt fate by using the theme tune to Batman And Robin (albeit remixed)? I won't be convinced of it's quality quite so soon.

From http://www.empireonline.com/ne ws/story.asp?NID=22942: There's been a very long wait for a first look at footage from Zack Snyder's take on Watchmen, The Greatest Comic Book Of All Timeā„¢. That wait is very nearly over. The trailer for the movie, about a world where betighted crime fighting heroes have been outlawed, will be showing in US cinemas in front of The Dark Knight. But for those outside the US, or who haven't snapped up a ticket for Batman's first day, you can see the trailer exclusively online here at Empire on Friday morning from 5am GMT (or 9pm PST on Thursday). Trust us, it's worth getting up early for. Watchmen will be released in March 2009.

Hope they use some actual 80s or 80s ish music in the film (unless they set it in the present). I was most worried about Dr. Manhattan but I think they pulled him off. I love the look of him while he's blasting apart those soldiers - totally serene and aloof. It seems like he really gets the character. I also like the leather on the silk spectre - totally fits with Alan Moore's ideas on the fetish aspect of superheroing (and it's hot). Minor complaint is that her and the Nite Owl might actually look too good as they're supposed to be a bit embarrassing and past their primes.

Dr. Manhattan is PERFECT!!! It was chilling to see him completely obliterate the Vietnamese soldier simply by pointing at him. Also, I'm digging Snyder's slo-mo technique, because it lets us savor the images that are placed before us. Rorschach looked great as well, although I would have loved to see him really in action, not just with the aerosol spray and a match. Ozymandias doesn't look nearly as bad as he did in the still from some months back. This ramped my excitement for this movie tenfold!

It's just that digital isn't limited to 24 frames a second and you can slow down pretty much anything and still have it look smooth. However, having said that, if these scenes are as-in-movie and slowed down to that degree, well, that's just artsy-fartsy for artsy-fartsy's sake.

I respect what Snyder is doing. And I'm very happy its R rated like 300. But I really am getting tired of this green screen shit. And 300 really didn't work for me. I'm glad it made money though because I like Hollywood making darker films. Dark Knight will hopefully change the industry for the better. In other words...I support Snyder as a filmmaker I just really wish he didn't rely on the green screen aesthetic for all his films. I'll definitely pay to see this in the theater...But I'm afraid it will probably wind up disappointing me like 300 and Sin City did.

I'll be damned. They have captured the look and spirit of the graphic novel precisely. And they have made a trailer that is clearly targeted AT THE FANS (every pivotal shot from the book save for... well, almost everything in the 12th issue) that also will make Joe Six-Pack go "WHOLLY SHEET WE GOTTA SEE THAT!" Bravo Warners marketing (and to "the visionary director of 300").

but it just doesn't seem to have the right feel visually for the material. it's too stylized, glossy, clean, etc. the essence of what moore was trying to do was to place the construct of superheroism in the decidedly real world zeitgeist of 1985. snyder's just doesn't seem to be the type of filmmaker who can handle the nuances that the material demands.

I don't like it. I know why you guys do. It looks exactly like everyone thought it would. Zach Fucking Slow Motion DOESN'T THIS LOOK SO BADASSSSS Snyder adapting the SINGLE most intellectually fulfilling graphic novel ever written. That's not pretentious fanboy bullshit either. Name all the reasons why you loved Watchmen, and I'm pretty sure "because the heroes looked so cool blowing shit up" is nowhere on the list. He was never the right man for the job. Look, as a now definite pessimist on this movie, I just want to state that I don't find you all idiots for geeking out over this movie. I thought 300 was cool. But this won't be anything to mainstream audiences other than random superheroes in ridiculous costumes that look as if they walked out of an Ultraviolet sequel. Why the HELL is he keeping the movie set in the 80s when the whole reason for the book was to be a mirrored image of today's society? Snyder will be slavish to the visual aesthetics of the comic (as the preview showcases), but Watchmen is literally the only superhero comic where that aspect is the LEAST important. The STYLE of the movie looks way too in-your-face. Slo-mo superhero poses go entirely against the gritty realism presented in the story, as do the slo-mo "money shots" that Snyder prides himself in. Fucking shame.

Please show me the part in my posts where I said anything about people hating the trailer. Here's what I ACTUALLY posted (twice): Go ahead and start picking the movie apart based on a two minute trailer. So, what I'm saying is people who say the movie will suck based on the amount of information that trailer gave us are presumptuous assholes. If you wanna say the TRAILER sucked, I have no problem with that. But looking at the trailer and saying anything about the movie itself is fucking retarded.

For one, you should not hate most of humanity, that is a big no-no (for your own comfort and that of others, ie those you hate for the most part). Secondly, you should try your hand at replacing Mugabe or some other fucker dictator, meanwhile, let others freely express their opinions as you do. And thirdly, trailers are just about the only thing you can pre-love, since you're obviously too tight-assed to love any girl or boy or dog other than your pretty, self-centered self (now that is a definite lack o' soul). So, why don't you go talkback with yourself, let us know the results and meanwhile we'll have a debate, a dialogue, something more interesting than one geeked-out, little shit spewing on himself. But thanks for the lesson and good luck on your search for soul.

Other than the geek joy of this why would anyone want to see a movie of something that is unfilmable.

CGI'd to death and obviously so, this is looks like it'll pull the kind of disappearing act that Sky Captain did.

Hope I'm wrong but I have no high hopes for this as I expected a more film noir tone to a watchmen film and this just feels right off in terms of look and atmosphere.

Was not a fan of 300, and simply can't stand the gimmicky fast-mo/slo-mo effect. Doesn't seem suiting to Watchmen. But damned if that wasn't a stunning trailer otherwise. I've only watched it once and as I write this nearly every image is staying with me. I'll speculate no more on whether Snyder will deliver on this one or not. He's earned my ticket and I'll simply wait to see it through before I judge further.

Gotta agree for the most part with pleasebanme... "Name all the reasons why you loved Watchmen, and I'm pretty sure "because the heroes looked so cool blowing shit up" is nowhere on the list." The dark lighting/colours don't match the staid colours of the comic. However, I have SOME faith in Zak ;). I'm hoping the studio demanded that Zak put all the action shots into the first trailer (because, as we all know, the studio always knows best) and that this is NOT a summary of Zak's approach to the movie as a whole... All I'll say is - it's not worth getting too excited either way - this is only the first trailer and recent memory shows it wasn't til the later clips that we all saw Jarjar... (I can't even remember if that's how you spell his name; I've made such an attempt to blot it from my memory)

I don't agree that Watchmen should look like "The Wire". I always pictured it as a sort of waking nightmare. And the same people who complain about the slo-mo in 300 complain that the action scenes in The Dark Knight are cut too quickly to see anything. I appreciate the fact that the director lingers over the action scenes in 300 with lovingly detailed slo-mo.

The only way Citizen Kan could be improved upon would be to make half the film in slow motion. It makes stuff look cool and shiny.

But seriously, that looks like shit. He's bringing back all the same tricks from 300 that didn't work the first time around. Maybe I'll download the movie if I have trouble sleeping.

although i repeat my earlier observation that some of the characters appear to have had a heroism upgrade: the original made them out to be losers, but i ain't getting that vibe here.

to be honest, though, i don't mind if this is a sleeker Watchmen. although it's plainly one of the great graphic novels, it's not untouchable. the ending, as i've said before, is particularly pants.

And the theater was in complete silence the whole time, equal parts memsmerized and confused. The preview held everyones attention until the title came about, because I think for the most part the majority of those in attendance (press/contest winners) aren't diehard comic book fans. As soon as 'Watchmen' appeared on screen, I heard a few "what the hell?" and "What is that?" going around.

But talk about a perfect trailer score. Along with 300, Snyder (if he has any input) knows how to pick a song.

uh, i think the better question is why the hell not?

Watchmen is very much a creature of its time, suffused with Cold War paranoia and fear of imminent nuclear war. Maybe you ain't old enough to remember that, but the whole post-9/11 atmosphere is another kind of existential dread entirely.

Snyder made the right choice keeping this thing in the 80s.

Well, I can think of two off the top of my head. The way it illuminated that the superhero ethos represents the twisted underside of the American fascination with power, and how the literal existence of actual superheroes would have made our history worse, and not better, by encouraging our worst tendencies. And then there's the fact that everyone in the comic is quite insane [Manhattan no longer has a human mind; Rorscharch is a psychopath; Ozymandias' megalomania is boundless; the other "costumed adventurers" are bondage freaks or the equivalent of furries] and that insanity illuminates the petty insanity of our culture's love of the genre. Now, I'm trying to see how the occasional use of slo-mo, or a "slick" or hyperrealized look, makes it harder for the director to communicate either of those points, and I'm sorry but I just don't see it.

I'd have to disagree. There are plenty of people who know about Watchmen these days. I worked in a comic book store for 7 years and in that time we would sell about 1 or two copies of Watchmen a day (on average). I can't think of any other graphic novel that has that kind of consistant sales figures. And the buyers weren't all fanboys, either. On top of that, there were lots of people who would come in the store and as they noticed Watchmen would say "I read that in college". Is it as well known as American Idol? No, of course not. But there is a built in audience for Watchmen that is a whole lot larger than some people think.

I made a point not to insult anyone here that thinks this looks good. I'm happy that you have a Watchmen movie of which you approve. But please tell me you don't actually think that to ANYONE other than comic nerds this movie doesn't look just like an Aeon Flux or Ultraviolet or whatever the fuck that new Vin Diesel movie is called. The same old money shots. LAUGHABLE slo-mo. Watchmen IMO was never supposed to look like a video game OR a music video. Respect for the source material isn't just putting panels from the comic on screen, it actually has to do with understanding the tone and successfully conveying the THEMES of the work. This is 300-izing the comic that is the absolute FURTHEST THING from style over substance imaginable. The world of Watchmen is even SUPPOSED to look goofy to illustrate how absurd and topsy-turvy a world with superheroes would be. The heroes were never supposed to look "badass" as their hair billows in the wind and a lightning bolt strikes right behind them while taking out the trash to some fucking rock music. Idiotic.

Yes 300 did use slow motion to GREAT effect in various scenes. The material lent itself to that. Dawn of the Dead had little to no slow motion b/c it was a different story and lent itself to sped up imagery. Film viewers should recognize that different stories require diffent techniques and to murder Snyder for one film choice is extreme ignorance. He needed a BIG SALE trailer and that's what this is, he's reaching the widest audience with simple, non-verbal communication, but hey, maybe I'm way off and Snyder's a one-trick pony, I bet my right hand that's not the case.

This couldn't have come at a better time. After seeing so much talk about this mysterious "watchmen" i finally went out and bought the GN, and just finished reading it a couple hours ago. This is a spot-on rendition, and it looks like it avoids any potential cheesiness that simply wouldn't adapt well to the big screen. A concern I have though, and have since Speed Racer and Hellboy 2 came out, is.. will anybody besides us care? I mean, the story is great, but at the same time it's really quite different. The main worry I have revolves around the story's "bad guy" and his ultimate scheme; it's so interesting but at the same time he's just shooting all these fantastical elements to his plan in so little time, but films don't give you the leisure to take it all in like you can with a book or graphic novel...

Fewer people read 300 than have read Watchmen. But 300 did pretty well box-office wise. One can argue that the Spartan angle brought in people who like historical films, but the History channel doesn't exactly get blowout ratings. 300 succeeded because the trailers for it were so damn compelling, and because Snyder had genre credibility from the Dawn remake. Now Snyder's credibility is a multiple of what it once was, and extends out to more filmgoers. So if he actually makes a good movie... This can succeed if it's great. It will fail if it's mediocre. And that's actually pretty cool in my book. I think it will have a good opening weekend because Snyder is now what M. Night was the day before Signs opened. He's a guy who's relatively well known because so many people saw one of his films on DVD, and because so many OTHER people saw a film of his that was a breakout hit, and "A Zach Snyder film" will get a certain percentage of those people into a threatre. ONCE. Now he has to deliver, or it's off to Lady in the Water gulag for him.

He actually takes existing materials and embraces the idea of collaboration. I think M Night could still be a good if not great filmmaker if he understands that we (the audience) are tired of the closed worlds he continues to offer. His films have become the genetically inferior
