I saw both Pitch Black and Chronicles of Riddick on DVD and I thought they were pretty good. But I also knew that Chronicles hadn't done well in the theaters, despite Vin Diesel talking about the "trilogy." And I accepted Chronicles for what it was - just another "Part One" of a series we'd never see. This "Part One" trend has frankly been ruining Hollywood movies/adaptations for a while now. If you look at some of the movie trilogies that worked best (Star Wars, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones...even Pirates of the Caribbean), you will notice that they were ORIGINALLY made as standalone films, not just the first portion of a story that you won't actually like unless you get to see the whole thing. Then, after they establish that they can make a GOOD film, they build off of it with sequels and work with the original material to make it SEEM like they always intended a trilogy. All these book adaptations trying to be the next Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter are shooting themselves in the feet from their lack of understanding this simple concept. I felt like Chronicles of Riddick had a lot of the symptoms of this disease, and the only person I've ever heard championing the Riddick Trilogy concept has been Vin Diesel himself. Maybe if Universal had a rep saying something about "It's not out of the realm of possibility" or "We're developing the scripts," then I might be able to go back and watch Chronicles of Riddick again without thinking to myself how disappointing it is to never get to find out how this story was intended to end. You know?

Not trying to compare "Golden Compass" with "Riddick" but it's another example of a part one of a series that we'll never see. "Eragon" as well, although no one gives a shit about that. There's tons more examples out there, and I do think it's becoming a serious problem. Although as Beaks said, we did get a Hellboy II and I never thought that would happen.

Pitch Black was great. Chronicles was an overbloated suckfest. If they're really going to continue the series (and i'll believe it when i see it) they should stick to the lean situation based model of Pitch Black and steer clear of the murky sci-fi of Chronicles.

I Would Really Like To Pitch An Idea For This!!!!

I hear the director is writing a script but, I thought Chronicles of Riddick wasn't a logical step forward for Riddick. I understand that Vin Diesel wants an Epoch, but Chronicles had a lot of fat in it, and failed to advance the story very much or take advantage of its huge sets. Stargate: SG1 stole the idea, and did it a lot better with the Ori saga. In Chronicles, save for the beginning, the prison escape and the ending, all we saw was a myriad of soldiers running around in montages...and terribly undefined ships and strangely slow and unexciting action--a deep contrast to Pitch Black, which was fun, fast, terrifying, and exciting??? I want to bring that back to the series, that sense of amusement park rollercoaster thrills and suspense.

I have a cool story outline that does just that. I wrote it after I saw Chronicles, and was greatly disappointed. I set the script outline I was writing aside, when Riddick failed at the box office...when I heard that there may not be anymore sequels. Well, now that talk has started again, I figured I try to pitch my outline just in case the right folks out there are reading these posts. If you're game, and work for Vin or his direct collaborators, ask Harry for my email address, and give me a chance to pitch my story. I think it's what you're looking for!!!

Riddick was always a live action version of Heavy Metal magazine.

You know those Moebius stories, or the Meta-Baron saga that were really cool as long as you didn't ask too many questions. Don't try to make the world actually hang together. Just enjoy the over-the-top melodrama of the thing.

Vin Diesel's just happy to work.

I'm fairly certain that the Chronicles did well by the numbers on DVD considering it was one of the first HD-DVD titles and it was widely offered in rebate/combo packages. I think they should keep them coming. Straight to DVD would be fine with me as long as they keep the budget on par with the last one. However, if they want to be gutsy and try to make a blockbuster with the next one, I'll be happy to fork over my $8.

I don't mean to be rude, but you and so many others are quick to judge the box office potential of actors, but yet know nothing about their past and potential bankability. Vin Diesel has had a steady run of hits. They may not be blockbusters, but studios take notice when the word "profit" is declared. Although The Pacifer was not what many considered a homerun, the film, budgeted at aroumd $60 million, ended up grossing around $90 million at the box office, not to mention another $30 million on DVD. Chronicles of Riddick, budgeted at $105 million grossed $115 internationally and another $50 million on DVD. Even his small drama Find Me Guilty made a profit. You're what they call in politics a "low information voter." I'm sure you're smart about something. This isn't one of them.

Pitch Black was good and Chronicles of Riddick, while flawed, had a lot going for it. I thought though that Colm Feore was horribly miscast. He's a good actor but he just doesn't have an aura of being a bad @ss emperor typed so it minimized the threat and the final fight didn't have an epic weight. Also, the story structure didn't quite work. The time on the prison planet while good, took away from the main story so the build up to the end wasn't anywhere near what it should've been. Riddick is a good character and that universe has lots of potential.

Pitch Black was a great sci-fi thriller and Chronicles felt like real old-school 80s science fiction. I, for one, would pay to see another RIDDICK adventure. He's just such an unusual and eccentric sci-fi hero - the Snake Plissken of our times, sort of. The last film was far from perfect but it had some amazing scenes and a fantastic ending, with tons of potential for subsequent installments. I think, there is great potential in continuing the CHRONICLES!!!

Pitch Black was badass, because we had no idea what to expect. Out of nowehre, this little nothing of a film comes out, fearlessly, and introduces Riddick, who *I* thought was gonna fucking kill everyone by film's end (hehe.)Anybody and everybody was expendable. Riddick should have been treated better in the sequel, but the "Holy shit, he's king now" ending kinda paints the whole thing in a corner, doesn't it? Besides...Chronicles was balls. And not in a good way.

I liked the Director's Cut for Chronicles of Riddick
by Drath

12:07:47 AM
I didn't go see the movie in theaters because I read that they'd cut stuff out and that that stuff would be in the DVD. I figured it would be better to see it with all the deleted stuff. I honestly do not know how the theatrical cut made any sense to anyone. The Director's Cut was strong I thought, and I'm kind of disappointed in the internet community for piling on the snark and not supporting the film more (I'm looking you, CHUD bitches). I would very much like to see the series continue. But if I hear of more cuts, I'll wait for the DVD again. Maybe the answer here is stop cutting the films to suit bullshit studio memoes concerned with statistics about optimum movie lengths and showtime schedules.

If AD doesnt flop, that might just convince Universal that Vin Diesel is bankable enough for these Riddick sequels. Pitch Black is a great movie. Chronicles was flawed, but I loved the prison planet stuff, that should have been the whole story, like Oz in space, and keep the shadow villains for future movies. Still puzzled how they got Judi Dench to be in there tho...
I liked Chronicles of Riddick.
by veebeeyes
Aug 26th, 2008
12:16:24 AM
Certainly had its problems, and wasn't as good as Pitch Black, but I thought it was a nice attempt to create a grand sci-fi universe. Pitch Black, while entertaining, was just sort of a small movie. It was well-done, but it was basically Aliens vs People. Which we've seen over and over again for about more times than I can count. I liked that Chronicles of Riddick tried to expand the scope of the universe that those characters occupy, and tried to introduce a whole sense of culture and mythology that the first movie really only hinted at. So I'd be down with more Chronicles of Riddick movies in a heartbeat. I just hope that they're better than the last one. Because even though Chronicles of Riddick was sort of ambitious, it really DID sort of stink. But there was enough going for it that I'd like to see more stories set in that universe.

Ya Bloo, CoR has done pretty well after then fact with the fan love.... PB was no-low-budget imagination, CoR was big budget Heavy Metal Space Opera Barbarianism and grand yet cheap looking world (expensive to make) fun to watch. Good switch-up. One of the only characters Vin can do well in his gravelly-voiced-love-thyself badassitude (excluding class like Boiler/Giant/Ryan or fluff like Furious), and does not come off as hokey-BS. Seeing him stick-thin doing B-Dancing on YouTube from years ago, glad he bulked up, and takes himself (on film anyways) seriously. Do not know if Arny or Sly even, could have pulled off the coffee/tea cup and key scene in CoR, classic... Lets see more Riddick, but lets go lower on the budget, make it more raw – a little PB with my CoR... Having met Sly, Arny and Vin (I work as a talent agent), of all three, Vin is the most down to earth and ironically jovial, great to converse with. Hope he gets to make more of them. Will buy tickets, DVD, and game(s)...

Not including LOTR, but what usually ends up happening is that both movies end up feeling similar to one another. Also they feel rushed and getting released so close to each other, makes us tire of the franchise all together. There needs to be several years between sequels. So enough time has passed where you're excited to see these characters agin. It's like seeing old friends you haven't seen in a while.

I'd like to see more Pitch Black Riddick myself. When I first saw it, it was the first time i "recognized" Vin and I thought the character was great. COR, not so much... Still I think more can be done with the character if they haven't already ruined him with COR. Also: The game was brilliant and gives said character a lot more depth, imo.

I way preferred Pitch Black to Riddick. The effects were nice but everything had an 'over-designed' quality that stopped me from believing what I was watching, especially the bad guys. They looked like they stepped out of 'Starlight Express'. I think Diesel gets more flack than he should, if you compare him to the likes of Arnie and Stalone back in the 80's he has much better acting chops. His performance was mesmerising in Pitch Black. I'd like more stories, but they need start with much stronger stories.

Those prison dogs looked horribly CGI, and the ships looked like they were shot via stop motion animation, with a herky jerky feel. I prefer the photo-realistic look of Pitch Black. It had a much lower budget, but better effects...and the filmmakers forgot a main rule that James Cameron has always talked about, you never waste money on huge sets if you aren't going to use them much. They could have shot models and green screened much of the villains' ship interiors or filmed at practical locations ala in a gothic stone castle or church...saving the money for those huge sets for better effects shots elsewhere.

I seem to remember reading somewhere (does Twohy have a blog?) that they'd received an amount of money from someone who wanted to see it happen. It was a smaller amount, and it would probably come out to more of a Pitch Black Budget than a CoR budget, but I think that's probably for the best. I just hope Twohy nails the script this time out and it's better than CoR.

Take a smaller budget, cut everything down to basics and then make a badass movie with what you have. A good filmmaker can make a $30 million movie look like a $60 million movie. They could learn a little something from Rodriguez and Del Toro. Twohy has experience with smaller budgets (Pitch Black is the perfect example). It all depends on if Diesel is still demanding a ridiculous salary or not (I'm guessing he's not).

won't affect this. Seriously, here is the director himself talking about Babylon A.D.:

"Talking to AMC, French import Mathieu Kassovitz ripped apart his own movie. "I'm very unhappy with the film," he admits. However, he's not taking any of the blame. He says, "I never had a chance to do one scene the way it was written or the way I wanted it to be. The script wasn't respected. Bad producers, bad partners, it was a terrible experience." The result was a film which he categorizes as "pure violence and stupidity." Kassovitz wanted to say something substantive with the film, but instead he ended up with a movie that plays "like a bad episode of 24."

As for Riddick, I loved Pitch Black and thought Chronicles was watchable, and would be quite happy to see more, but I think a scale-down might be a good thing-as long as it's a scale-down that is known from the script level.

Harry nailed it in his description of the second one. If felt like something you'd see on the sci-fi channel. It was really cheap. And while a lot had obviously been put into creating the mythology, I'll be honest with you... IT WAS STUPID. It was just dumb. I'm sorry. Dumb dumb dumb. And those two things are what made the movie so dumb. I thought Twohy was a genius after Pitch Black. But then I saw "Below" (remember how heavily that was pushed on this site?) and what a wandering unfocused piece of shit. Was it a submarine movie? A supernatural movie? A ghost movie? The fucking thing could never decide. What an awful film. So as far as these two sequels being made? I don't know. Go talk to Uwe Boll I guess and figure out one of his weird every German dollar is worth 10 American dollars and the movie can gross one fourth of its budget and still make a profit scams. Otherwise, I have no idea how these get made.

The moment that Riddick held back from killing the bounty hunter sent after him at the beginning of the film, I knew they'd neutered the character to make him more "family-friendly." Plus, the film had more gaping holes than a 40-year old porn star.

Problems with Riddick
by Jonah Echo
Aug 26th, 2008
08:23:41 AM
was the move from a somewhat hard sci-fi story to a more fantasy based space opera. Too much Necromonger, Elemental, Furyan stuff dumped into a world that didn't seem to accomodate them originally. And they were not fleshed out to exist in the world.

Everything with Riddick and the bounty hunters and Kyra and Crematoria worked fine. And while toning Riddick down was silly, they didnt make much of his percieved conversion at the end of Pitch Black. I don't mean a religious conversion, I mean man rejoining the humn race. They could have built that sacrifice made for him on the planet a searing iron burning it's way through his heart, and still kept a hard edged bad ass. As it was, we got Riddick the comic book. Most of you might have been happy with that, but the pieces were there for a superior film to Pitch Black, but we got an inferior one. Still, Im up for a sequel.

I get a major FLASH GORDON vibe on the 2nd one. I love how there are never any clear cut good guys or bad guys. I love the design of everything, even if the CGI gets a bit cheap. The director's got a great style. And the cliffhanger at the end of the 2nd one really needs closure. Can't give Riddick enough love without going gay.

Keep the story claustrophic, and have just a few characters up close. How about the Lord Marshall has a trap that throws Riddick into the Under-verse? I always thought telling us but not showing us the Under-verse was a major story weakness, something beginners might do. And NO EXPOSITION! AT ALL! Just let Vin find himself armed with a knife, facing gigantic monsters and not having a clue how he got there.

Pitch Black is a cool little sci-fi flick, low budget but entertaining for what it is. Chronicles of Riddick....SUCKED, a mish-mash of ludicrous situations (compared to Pitch Black anyway), bad FX, and poor editing (can't stand that big fight where the sound FX are muted and the only thing we hear is from the shitty soundtrack). Pitch Black was modest in execution but very effective in delivery....while CoR was like cramming a elephant into a shoe-box, it just dosent FIT IN.

Didn't catch Pitch Black until everyone had already talked about, but was intrigued. I LOVED Chronicles of Riddick -- and I can't quite explain why, but part of it was the general ambiguousness that someone else mentioned -- no clear-cut "good guys" or "bad guys", and a twisty narrative that just went for broke in the fantasy and casting departments (Judi F'ing Dench?!). I liked its ambition and its relentlessness, and would have loved to have seen a trilogy, but the film hasn't done well enough to warrant them. Unfortunately, if they get made at all, they'll now be relegated to low-budget, all but direct-to-dvd hell, which kind of makes them not worth doing anyway... Do it BIG or don't do it at all... Twohy's an interesting dude, for sure...

Remember, he's Satan incarnate. I'd like to discover in the next episode that the denizens of the Underverse are the light-hating flying reptiles from Pitch Black. Only bigger, and smarter. Of course I'm stealing ideas from the vastly-underrated "The Mist", where the critters that were killing everyone were just vermin from the other dimension, and not its rulers.

Chronicles of Riddick had its moments.

There were some great moments throughout the movie, a few surprisingly good lines, and some intriguing ideas, but a lot of the writing was just really sloppy and the special effects weren't all that special (with that lame-ass CG tiger-thing easily being the most painfully retarded effect ever put on film). Mostly, I think the problem was they were trying to do entirely too much with the movie. It's obvious that they wanted it to be epic, but they rushed it and, as a result, they were just all over the place and the writing, the pacing, the story, and most of the dialogue really suffered. Of course, the forced and juvenile attempts to revel in the bad-ass-osity of ALL the characters didn't help. A lot of it was just so over the top it was ridiculous. If they managed to bring that down a notch, really sharpen up the writing, and maybe scale things back to something a little smaller and more intimate like Pitch Black, then they might be able to rebound and save the franchise. Though, sadly, I'm not optimistic.

One more in line with Pitch Black, and one more in line with Chronicles' LOTR view. I like when someone said "Conan in Space", if they really want to get it right, the LOTR part, they need to go in the direction of the first Conan film, hard core, that was a good/great film!!! The last shot of Riddick in Chronicles, as he sat back in the chair and realized what was going on around him was amazing.

I wish that the whole film had been made out of moments like that. The villain was too clean, too proper, too verbose and too available to the the audience and his people, he should have been in the shadows, and quietly sinister like James Earl Jones in Conan, and the same for Riddick, for that matter. We need a villain who is more Trent Renzor or Marylin Manson in terms of demeanor, sort of like Health Ledger in Dark Knight.

Someone brought this up earlier, and this is one of the things that just pulls me out of a movie. Yes, I am aware that It is hotter in the direct sunlight than it is in the shade. Of course, generally speaking this can depend on a number of factors. For example, if you are in a frozen wasteland, it might actually be COLDER in the sunlight than it is in the shade, depending on whether or not the shelter that provides shade for you also captures your body heat and insulates you from the cold wilderness outside. But generally speaking, let's say that it's hotter in the sunlight than it is in the shade. Still, as long as there is an atmosphere, won't that RETAIN HEAT? As in, suppose you're living in Florida in the summer. You're on the beach, and it's hot, so you stand under a tree to get some shade (not that there are many trees on the beach, so let's change that tree into an umbrella). You're now in the shade, and it's cooler. But here's the thing...it's not THAT much cooler. Because won't the hot air still be mixing with the cool air under the umbrella? Granted, the situation seen in Chrinles of Riddick might work on the MOON. Because the moon has no atmosphere. So there's no atmosphere to protect you from scorching solar radiation. And there's no atmosphere to retain heat, so that you don't freeze solid when the sun goes away. But when we're talking about a planet with an atmosphere (the characters in Chronicles of Riddick weren't wearing space suits), doesn't that sort of go right out the window? I mean, yes, it's hotter in the shade. However, direct sunlight INSTANTLY INCINERATES PEOPLE. If this planet has an atmosphere similar enough to normal human conditions to allow people to run across the surface of the planet with 100% efficiency and not DIE, then how is getting in the shade gonna help? Yes, direct sunlight might raise the air temperature to 4000 degrees Celsius. But the point is that the sun is going to raise the AIR temperature. So when you try to hide from the sun by getting in the shade, it very well may be cooler. But the surrounding 4000 degree air is going to mix with the air in the shade, raising the temperature in the shade to a good 2000 fucking degrees. It's cooler, but who cares? You're still dead.

Everything since then has since degraded what made it great. This is the perfect example of studios mining a thin but compelling sci-fi/fantasy story for bucks, but only succeeding ing strip-mining it and barely making a profit. Personally, I preferred my own wistful speculations on Riddick's origins and the fate of the survivors to what the Chronicles have delivered. It's just possible that it might still be saved, or at least improved (shouldn't be that hard), but I get the feeling we're going to see some Furyan homeworld battles in flashback, some parent/family tragedy a la Conan, re-hashed space-opera revenge story, finally seeing Riddick become either lonely hero flying off into the sunset to be subsequently worshipped by the slaves he's freed, or crowned ruler of the newly created/discovered Furyan nation, or, less likely, sacrifice himself for those same pitiful dependents/slaves/worshippers. Shit. This is Conan in space.

I'm taking your challenge to name 5 better sci-fi movies since CHRONICLES came out. 1. CHILDREN OF MEN. 2. WALL-E. 3. SUNSHINE. 4. WAR OF THE WORLDS. 5. SERENITY 6. STAR WARS PART 3 (sorry, it's true) 7. There must be other sci-fi movies that have come out in the past 4 years.

Let's be honest, CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK is not a great sci-fi fantasy movie. It's silly and dumb and full of unintentional laughs ("I haven't smelled beautiful in a long time" is my personal favorite) and betrays its whole "serial killer chosen one" concept by opting for a PG-13 rating and not having him ever do anything bad at all. I was hoping for a genuinely smart and good lowbrow movie like John Carpenter used to do or early Schwarzenegger, but this is not that good of a movie. Let's not fool ourselves.

But... I still like it. I would've preferred "genuinely good" but "weird, stupid fun" is also acceptable. And it has that great ending so yes, please, make another one. I approve of Vin's mission of getting somebody to accidentally greenlight this.

CoR has been added to my queue. I feel asleep after 30 minutes as I was bored to tears and didn't wake up until I was elbowed during the closing credits.

The movie was a huge departure from Pitch Black and that, along with the PG-13 rating, probably killed it at the theater as the base audience felt like they were no longer in the same universe.

Personally, I don't want to see any Necromongers in the new film. Let's have Riddick dissolve their following, pronounce the Lord Marshall a liar, and then head out himself, perhaps with a crew to find the Underverse. Most importantly, it should involve Riddick having a fresh adventure that is more sci-fi based.

One of the struggles would have been leaving as leader and deciding to come back.

Yes, Riddick as a leader of a kingdom would be contrary to his character from Pitch Black, but I would like to see him have to make the decision.

You know a part of his selfish side woould like the pampering and power, but his true 'animal' side (Like when he pulled a Crocidile Dundee on that prison poodle) would be a very strong thing to keep bottled up.

But those that know me also know that I would like some creatures as the villians in the next.

Maybe an evolution of the creatures from Pitch Black as they leave the other planet to look for darkness.

Also have one of them larger, a superboss of the rest that is smarter.

COR's problem..
by Jonah Echo
Aug 27th, 2008
09:45:47 AM
Danny is right, he wasn't that different. And, whether people admit it or not, Pitch Black was about the man reconnecting with his humanity. Any other genre flick would have ended with Riddick being only slightly good enough to sacrifice himself for the others, leaving him a vague villain/hero. Most movies wouldn't have the balls to take the hardcore character and let someone else SAVE him, and let him be rocked to the core by it. Him screaming into the rain "Not for me!" was a big step for that kind of movie. And it totally worked.

So, I expected to see a changed Riddick, not a pansy, but a man who knows he is different and is dangerous in a new way, to a diff group of people.

But COR's problem is they only sort of reflected this change, and didn't make it much of a grappling point. Also, I thought there would be more struggle against the change in Riddick, and the false rebirth the Necros are trying to sell. Instead, it all seemed muddled, thematically speaking, and Riddick came off as less of a hard edged character and more of a comic book-esque hero. I didn't hate that, but felt that the meandering is what hurt the film.

Also, the script wasnt half as good as the original.

In a March 8, 2006 article on Comingsoon.net, it was reported that Vin Diesel claimed that a sequel to The Chronicles of Riddick was in the works. According to him, he had already written a storyline that covered a trilogy which began with the Chronicles of Riddick.

Another article on Comingsoon.net written on March 11, 2005 reports that Vin Diesel states that Chronicles 2 was to deal with The Underverse, while Chronicles 3 was to conclude the series with a return to Furya.

An article dated November 10, 2007 on countingdown.com, further indicates that a sequel may be in works - "We're talking about it". David Twohy indicates however that it "probably won't be a Universal movie and probably will be an independent movie" seeing a much smaller budget.

Personally I can't see him staying king or leader, but going into exile to shore up his past (which includes the fighting, creatures, killing) and in the end being alone again.

After Pitch Black you saw that despite having the role of leader, he was basically alone again (which was confirmed in Riddick as he had lost touch with his passengers).

And yes, I'm harping on the creature bit, but what I liked about Pitch Black was despite him being human, deep down he was an animal just like the dark dwellers.

That primal instict so close to the surface would seem to me a sort of tragic route for requiring a solo future, not one as a leader entrenched in society.
