Cautiously optimistic I guess. Looks a lot like Constantine though ( hopefully will be better than that). I don't remember much from the computer game except for the ultra cheesy dialogue and these weird, trippy dream sequences you played through.

If I hadn't played the games? I'd think this was a trailer for some supernatural thriller in the vein of say, Constantine.

It looks amazing, don't get me wrong. But I can only guess (or more accurately, FUCKING HOPE) That all the scenes with the Valkyries and swirling fiery sky and dissolving building, etc....are when someone, maybe even Max, is completely tripping balls off of Valkyr, the drug that the games center around.

Also, I really hope they keep the dark, noir-ish poetry voiceovers from the game, even possibly some of the comic book style of exposition. But that MIGHT not work with the way they're doing this.

I played the game years ago, and I all I remember that those angelic demons were a big part of the game, and there was a major demonic aspect. It started out as just a cop and the game became more and more supernatural, so yes it was definitely part of the game. The game also had many playable levels inside his dreams, which were amazing, I'm hoping there are some sweet parts in his dreams.

Max Payne is a classic for two reasons. First was the introduction of bullet-time mode which was super cool, and secondly for its engrossing storyline that was unlike the other games at the time. And as someone mentioned the game also includes levels where he is hallucinating, which accounts for some of the fantasy elements, but yeah I can't remember the angels, it was eons ago since I played it. I can't wait for the movie.

A bit too 90s no? a slice of John Woo, the pseudo dark style à la The Crow (at least without the brooding mime)? But it certainly looks quite nice. Of course it would be even better if the morons in charge of those movies didn't always believe that their demographic targets imply that we have to suffer the same ugly noisy crappy music on all of their trailers.

As a huge fan of the game, I can't help but actually like this trailer. But I can't quite separate the fan in me from the movie critic, so I'm not sure if it only looks good to me because it does a good job at nailing the game, or if I'd think it was just some garbage high-school-demographic flick. The fact that the "supernatural" stuff has to just be a drug induced side effect has been beaten to death, but I'll agree that it's pretty much the only option since the game has nothing to do with the supernatural, thus there's no way at all they could even remotely work it into the story for the film without utterly butchering everything else. So that, I've decided, is a plus. I wasn't thrilled about Mark, he's never really given me anything that I've been too impressed with. But then again, I can't really see too many people playing the role of Max Payne, so after seeing him in action I'll let it pass for now. As far as the narration goes, I definitely hope they keep it. That's one of the things that made the game, for me at least. Some call it cheesy, but that's like calling the dialog in comic book bubbles "corny"; it's not supposed to be Shakespeare. But even thought it was at times needlessly and overly poetic, it still gave the character a dimension beyond just some stereotypical cop out for vengeance. So I hope they can work the narration in somehow, though I'm not sure how good it'll turn out (even the opening narration for the trailer doesn't quite hit the same notes as the game version.) It's going to be hard to do the "man with nothing left to lose" thing after it's been done so many times. The game pulled it off well but it was a video game; film is obviously a different stage. This movie needs lots of seriousness, lots of inner mourning and self-reflection, and intensity to really pull it off. I'd much rather it be more about the man and less about his bullets. Speaking of bullets, there's no way around using the Woo stuff simply because it made the game famous. It may get a few eye-rolls from people who have seen the Matrix one too many times, but if somehow done tastefully and sparsely, it could work. All in all, not much hope for this movie, simply because it's Hollywood, and a video game property. It's easy to cut a good trailer, so from the trailer alone I see a lot of potential. But I fear it'll all just end up as wishful thinking.
Sigh

The only part that threw me off in the trailers have been the heavy use of Valkyries, but in the game narrative the drug Valkyr produces these hallucinations of Valkyries. So I guess it's the films way of elevating this plot point. I just hope it doesn't distract the greater story being told.

WTF???? Based off the trailer, I might actually like a Marky Mark movie. Very WOO'ish, and I love old school Woo. Don't mind the supernatural aspects if it's a good story with some good action. Hope it's as dark and gritty as the trailer makes it out to be. I'll be there when it comes out.

...would have made a pretty great Max Payne. Marky Mark looks like he'll do a decent job here, but I always pictured Payne a little older and a lot gruffer. Mickey Rourke might have been good too, a few years back. I'm just glad they didn't go with Ben Affleck, who actually looks the part. That said, this trailer looks pretty sweet. I don't remember as many drug hallucinations in the game as appear to be in the movie, but maybe the trailer's just a bit misleading. Remember when that Drug Lord is tripping and he says "I have tasted the flesh of fallen angels?" That was fucked up. The first game was fantastic, a real underrated gem. The second game was good, but there was this point where you had to jump from one fire escape to the other, and I just couldn't do it. Not under duress, not under some sort of time limit. Just jump from point A to point B. And I couldn't do it, so I said "fuck this game" and never went back. Same thing happened with the first Tomb Raider. Damn jumps. The world's a twisted place.
Just play the games.

This didn't look cool in the first place, so it can't continute to look cool, especially in an incredibly uncool trailer. I suggest you rent We Own The Night, The Killer and The Matrix, put them on three different channels/screens and just randomly flip back and forth. James Gray should have made this his sell out movie, then it might have been halfway decent.

Max Payne, Red Faction, AVP2, Rune, Deus Ex, Unreal. There just are not any games like this being made anymore. These games were innovative and they were cinematic. Then they went and made so much money that games caught the attention of the big money and that spoiled everything. Now... what great action games are there? There aren't any. Wait... there was one... Prey... from the creators of Rune. That game was a solid ass kicking. Otherwise... it's all a bunch of 3 level games stretched out into 30 levels of pointless repetitive $60 boredom. - this movie looks promising.

The Valkyries and the weird burning sky are all part of the trips that Max Payne has. They were in the game. The movie will probably also feature a weird scene where he wanders down a dark coridor towards the sounds of a screaming baby. It looks like they've took every single element of Max Payne and put it in here. Love it!!

Infact, in the game, one of his hallucinations was "You're in a computer game, Max" - so no doubt he'll hallucinate he's in a movie :)

I'll admit the movie is sort of pretty. But other than that, this film is a perfect example of "an R-rated storyline being cut to PG-13." Seriously, his wife is shot and there isn't an ounce of blood on their bed? All-in-all, the movie looks mediocre. I loved the game - but the changes from the game aren't what make it bad - it's the acting, the overuse of special effects, and the crappy dialogue.

Max Payne tried way too hard to be Sin City, and it wound up being a bloody and juvenile remake of seventeen Bogart movies.

"The sun went down with practiced bravado. Twilight crawled across the sky, laden with foreboding. "

lots of crap narration like that. The only thing that made the game worth playing was it was the first game to innovate what we refer to now as "bullet time" where time almost comes to a stand-still and gunfire plays out in extreme slow motion.

What really bugs me about movies that are shot like this is that everything looks really sanitized. As much as I liked Sin City, the digital backgrounds and stylized sets killed the illusion of making environments look like they're inhabited. I see the same problem here. I really hope this isn't the case with Watchmen.

So let me get this straight... 2 or 3 shots in a trailer that somewhat resemble the same imagery and color schemes used in another movie, and suddenly it's "LOOKS WAY TOO MUCH LIKE CONSTANTINE, SO UNORIGINAL, SUCKS"...? Are you kidding? You should just say "Oh wait, he's running from a bunch of bullets with glass shattering all around him just like that other movie, WOW so unoriginal."

Yes, those few shots in the trailer may resemble that other movie. But any idiot here who is completely overblowing that connection should just spare us from their stupidity and be silent.

the games are gritty, noir crime/revenge dramas that are well plotted for video games with some really cool and some cheesey voiceover dialogue.

the shots that are super slo mo (gun firing with snow flicking off of it and some others) were shot using a special camera that shoots at 120 frames a second I believe

they won't do PG-13, no fucking way that would work considering the violence, sex, and gritty nature of the videogames being translated faithfully to film. im not STOKED about this movie by any means....HITMAN was decent but butchered by most critics (FUCK Ebert....inconsistent prick)and the best videogame-to-movie film has been Silent Hill in my opinion, not so much from the acting but they kept the style very close to the games. ill probably see this out of curiousity AND im a fan of the games (all 2 of them), we'll see.

I like that they've taken the metaphor further and actually have these scary fuckers flying around in the film. If they combine this with the drug references and nail the tone (which it looks like they have from this trailer) it might just be the B-movie experience to watch!
Re: Silent Hill

I was this close to making the Silent Hill reference earlier.

I thought Silent Hill did a decent job at capturing the look of the game, but the "mood" was still completely lost. The only way you're going to capture the mood of Silent Hill is to have an unarmed character with one flashlight in complete darkness hearing disturbing sounds and seeing some messed up things in the dark. Not running around a well-lit set with plenty of fill lights and background lights just put there to "set the environmental mood".

But the real reason I was going to compare this to SH is the trailer. When I saw the initial Silent Hill teaser (not the full trailer that came later), I was completely blown away. But the finished product looked nothing like that teaser. The trailer was cut at a disturbing pace with distorted imagery straight from the game, with one of those pulse-raising "running from something unknown and inhuman in complete darkness and panic" industrial music tracks also from the game. But of course the movie didn't capture the same spirit as the trailer by far. Which leads me to believe this may be more of the same.

Agreed on the Silent Hill trailer point, But you couldn't make an entire film of those crazy images / sharp edits. You need some pacing and narrative, and while arguably the film got a few things wrong, I enjoyed it thoroughly, and it did stay true to the game In my opinion. Repeat viewings help too!

Not bad... but I can do without the ubiquitous emo slo-mo. What the fuck.. why can't they make an action movie nowadays that doesn't feel like a quaalude-doused slow motion nightmare? Also, good to see Luda (ATL!) in a role he can chew on like a piece of fried chicken and beer.

I'm not suggesting the entire film should've been shot erratic and disorienting, but it would've been better to throw in some of those types of shots to capture the proper feeling of panic, instead of "Oh look, she's running from CGI stuff and people in makeup." Repeat viewings didn't help my opinion of Silent Hill unfortunately, and as I said, I feel they got the LOOK of the game right, and maybe the "feel" if you only count certain imagery and short seconds of scenes. But taken as a whole the mood was lost, though I can completely agree that it made the best attempt of any video game-based film outside of Mortal Kombat. But taking a fighting game and expanding upon it is probably easier than retranslating a game with a lengthy and complex story, so I'm not sure how many people really take MK into the equation.
Re: Slo mo
by Viewer 3

I completely agree that slo-mo is used way too much in action films. Seeing the utterly asinine trailer for Wanted made me, for a split second, want to just stop watching movies altogether.

That being said, the slo-mo shots in this trailer are actually satisfying to me... no doubt because of my love for the game. But I can see that to anyone unfamiliar with the game it would be another eye-rolling shooting-while-diving-in-slow- motion action film. And I guess saying "it's only cool if you've played the game" won't change their minds, and rightfully so (it sure as hell wouldn't change mine if someone told me Wanted was based on a video game where people did dumbass, needless slow-motion spins and actions.)

I don't expect the trailer or movie to be too well received by the general public (already apparent by this talkback), but once the reviews hit I might actually see it.

Shyamalan's 'WTF' advice to Wahlberg:
by SkinJob69
Aug 30th, 2008
06:44:14 PM
"MTV has a curious quote from Mark Wahlberg recounting a bit of advice give to him from The Happening director M. Night Shyamalan. "[Night] gave me the worst advice he could have ever given me. He said, 'After [The Happening], you can never hold a gun again. You know that, right?' I said, 'Are you crazy?' He said, 'I'm serious, don't ever hold a gun again.' And I said, 'I don't know about that, man.'" Ironically enough that advice is quickly out the window as Wahlberg's gun laden follow-up to The Happening, Max Payne, hits theaters on October 17."- from IMDB

Mortal Kombat is an interesting one. I remember quite liking when it came out all those years ago, but it hasn't aged very well. It's also quite tongue-in-cheek at times. One thing I admired about Silent Hill was that it took the source material seriously. Too many VG-to-film adaptations go for a more humourous / self aware tone. Max Payne looks like it stays true to the feel of the game, which I think is a good thing.
