He could crush her in the debates, however if he does he'll lend sympathy to her, come off brutish and out of touch and send women voters their way - I know thats a generalisation but the general public don't think too logically. They'll have to tread very carefully with how they tackle her in the debates. Those who know she's inexperienced and unsuitable won't be swayed though. What is amusing is how McCain is shooting himself in the foot with this. His whole arguement against Obama is that he's inexperienced and not ready for the Presidency...he can't argue that too strongly now his VP choice has even less experience than Obama... ooooo politics at AICN, this is a change...

Dick Cheney's daughter is lesbian. yet the very idea of having a female president who is a lesbian, would be such a sufficiently horrifying idea to the Christian right that they would go out of thier way to destroy that candidate immediately. The same would happen if god forbid the candidate was gay. The same thing would happen if the man or woman had a form of disability. Their intellect would be questioned. Republicans would privately agree with talkbackers and say would you want a "retard" for president. The candidate might have a mild learning disability. but a way would be found to stop the candidate. So all this change and talk of change is bs. America's treatment of disabled people is an outrage. I heard Obama's speech and though he mentioned the poor he didnt mentioned the disabled not once. I

Palin is well known for being a stick up the ass of the oil companies here in Alaska. She's rattled a lot of sabers since taking office, including recently launching an official investigation into allegations of price gouging, which isn't all that surprising seeing how even though the gas we use here is not only pumped from but refined instate, we're still paying between $.60 to $1.00 more per gallon then the national average. That's like having your spouse charge you for sex. So no, if anything, him picking her as a VP says that he is not interested in being in the pocket of oil companies.

I knew that bush possibly had either dyslexia or dyspraxia. My guess is both. and it can happen. the newest member of our adult group has both and she entered the rose of tralee. having an SPLD is not a barrier to do anything. Look at aimee Mullins is model, actress, athelete. But if she joined a party and got into politics. Her barrier is that sh is disabled. she may have all the confidence, brains to burn and I think here dad was in the army. Daniel Radcliffe. has dyspraxia. I VERY RARELY interject myself into this discussions because really what's the point but, who cares what this guy says a)he's an outspoken liberal (hey lets see what Aaron Sorkin says) and Obama supporter so he's going to tow the party line, like when George Bush Sr. nominated the first (and only) African-American Judge to the Supreme Court, the liberals will say prior "they are [sexist, racist, etc] because they won't nominate a [black, woman, etc]" and then when they do they look for anything to critize

the same on the GOP side of things, it doesn't matter what side of the fence you're on, you're going to critize the other side and it's stupid, towing the party line

McCain and biden are the "old school" Obama has "148 days" of sente experience, Palin has 1 1/2 years of governing a state

Obama should have had a huge lead by now and it's been neck and neck all throughout!

He'll get a bump because of the DNC which was quite impressive but McCain is likely to recieve a similar bump.

The strength of the Clintons is being completely underestimated and many Clintonistas WILL vote for McCain out of spite!

The independent vote will go to McCain after the debates and the rest is history!

The tickets are virtually even. McCain has eons more experience than Obama and Biden has eons more experience than Palin...but it's true that Palin at least has more managing experience than all three put together!

obviously a lot of people who are posting opinions. I don't believe this was put here to anger people but to provide a forum for discussion about a topic that is prevalent in many peoples minds at the moment. If you can't offer a well considered opinion or retort then don't. If you don't feel this thread is appropiate for AICN, look elsewhere here - the Ratner hate is warming up nicely in the GH thread. Seems to me there are plenty of people who still want to discuss this. I agree that the leadin is somewhat frivelous...I don't give a damn what some writer thinks when contrasting this with a failed TV series, but debating with other talkbackers is always fun. I stand by the point that Paulin is a sneaky way to try and appease the women voters, the scary reality is with the age of McCain it must be considered she'd need to stepup. I'm not saying she can't, what i'm saying if we don't know she can. Obama has demonstrated an ability to converse with foreign leaders and build people around him, to have already started to form relations overseas and within government. He has brought into his team people with experience in areas that seriously need fixing in the US, notably foreign relations and economy. I don't think McCain is doing that here, she offers youth and a different sex, its those disenchanted voters this is for, not a serious consideration of someone who may have to run the country. She may be able to but at the end of the day, the McCain camp has a long way to go to convince/show anyone who really thinks about it that Paulin is ready for such a position.

whatever your, um, interesting take on things is, the fact of the matter is that McCain and camp either have to share the stage with Bush at their convention (and his less than 30% approval rating) or they have to explain his absence. (I'll bet they send him to Florida). either way, if you think McCain will get as much of a bump after that mess as Obama does after giving a rousing and almost universally admired speech, you're not too quick on the trigger.

and the first time the Alaskan Mayor debates Joe Biden, it's done.

Alternative energies are not going to happen overnight. It's absurd that we are not drilling more right now. The country cannot move off of oil for at least a decade until replacement infrastructures are in place. We need someone who will drill more in the short term, but kick the shit out of the oil companies if there is any collusion or gouging going on. Other energy absurdities:

1) that we haven't built a fuckin nuke reactor in how many freakin years??? Yes, nuke. It fucking works.

2) that stupid ass Bush made such a big deal about corn based ethanol, which was NEVER going to solve the energy situation, that food prices have jumped dramatically in the last couple of years

3) that we are not offering crazy incentives for development of alternative energy solutions that actually work (high efficiency solar, window covering solar, tide-based energy capture, self-generating hydrogen stations, and so on ...)

I thought the DNC in general came off as a success and Obama's speech was a lot of the same old stuff but the way he presented it was like nothing I've ever seen before.

THERE IS NO WAY THAT McCAIN CAN GIVE A SPEECH LIKE THAT.

But McCain can rely on substance to push him through to a victory. I thought the DNC show was great. But my choices when it comes to politics do not rely on who had the best show or who seems to be more popular with Hollywood celebs.

Once again, I don't even like McCain but my lesser of two evils choice goes to him.

Did you really want to create a biased political thread? If so, why didn't you just say so?

Governor Sarah Palin has nearly as much experience as that cynical-liberal candidate owned by the far left, Barack Hussein Obama.

Actually, if you count "executive" experience, she has even more experience that the liberal senator from Chicago. Obama has shown up to Washington a few times to vote, but for the most part, he prides himself as being a "Washington outsider." How is Governor Palin any different?

But, dear God, have the Liberal Dickheads grown so obviously biased that they will actually resort to turning AintItCoolNews into a leftist political blog? I can tell that the minions of left-leaning radicals are salivating over this -- and will attempt to make it politically correct to spew the regurgitated age-discrimination and gender-discrimination talking points from the liberal leadership of the Democratic Party. They jump at the opportunity to mock anyone who disagrees with their far-left social views.

Sigh.

It really isn't "tolerance" when you only tolerate those who support your own liberal views. There is no room for diversity in the Democratic Party -- no matter how much the party of slavery and Jim Crowe try to make it appear. But keep humping the leg of Barack Obama. If you hump fast enough, you might just get that rushing political orgasm that you seek.

...and 3 yr in office Senator Obama will thank you for it.

you might think women are stupid enough that 1/3 of Hillary's supporters will vote for McCain because he has a pro-life, pro-gun, pro-school prayer VP candidate...but thankfully that is laughably incorrect.

look, pretty soon we'll have a gallup poll with both VP candidates in play, and with both conventions done. and when that happens, Obama will be up by 10 points, and as soon as EITHER the main or VP debates happens, it will be completely over.

that's my 2 cents. call me a nutcase if you like, but you better show up to the "Barack Obama wins the presidency" talkback, and eat some crow if he wins big. if he wins, but just slightly, I'l eat the crow, and we can all hug and be thankful he won at all!

Sarah Palin has more executive experience - running a state trumps being a Senate back-slapper. (Got that John, Joe and Barry?) It's hysterical to see "lack of foreign policy experience" being used as a disqualifier against the NUMBER TWO candidate by people who think that the even less-experienced top of the ticket on their side is A-OK with his meager resume. Obama needed to take on a corrupt Senate lifer with ties to shady banks and a son who's a crooked lobbyist to balance his lack of experience. Al Gore was trying to convince the crowd at the Nuremberg rally in Denver that Obama was qualified because Lincoln was light on experience, but not even 24 hours later they're bashing Palin for being too green?!?

McCain stole all the thunder from Obama when he thought he was going to coast to the throne. Women who watched the Dems diss Hillary Clinton's 18 million supporters in favor of an sausagefest ticket suddenly have someone to vote for. McCain will only serve one term meaning Palin could run for Prez in 2012. Hillary must be throwing more lamps than usual!

Rod Lurie's problem with Palin is that she isn't an extreme liberal like him. He knows his party is sexist and can't stand that the Republicans are prepared to put a woman in high office when the Dems wouldn't. The whole meme was "Dems care about minorities and women" but when push came to shove, they ran for the old while guy (Biden is 66) and to hell with the chicks. Too funny.

Obama will pay for his dirty political tactics -- in which he tried to paint Hillary and Bill as "racists." People have figured out that Obama is just a guy who can speak relatively well -- but can provide no real answers. I would love to see a debate with McCain and Biden (the old guys) and Palin and Obama (the young people). McCain/Palin would rip those empty tax-happy liberals to shreds! But Michelle Obama and the Obama campaign's fleet of racists, terrorists and felons would be there to help pick up all of the pieces.

Well then I guess he's just completely fucked then. Yeah, offshore oil drilling that wouldn't make a lick of fucking difference with its paltry amounts and YEARS AND YEARS of drilling before we see any of it is really substantive. Along with his "been there and failed miserably" post WWII style of mouth breathing foreign policy, yeah the guy is real fucking deep. As for the economy, well he has admitted IN HIS OWN WORDS that he isn't terribly knowledgeable in that field. i hope someone tells him that trickle down economics are bullshit. If you think John "was a maverick until it stopped benifitting me now Im just a conservative shill" McCain is somehow more substantive than Barack Obama then you're drinking the kool aid because that is nothing more than unsubstantive conservative talking points bullshit. You guys have inarguably a weak candidate and he's just chosen a walking talking flesh colored gimmick as his running mate. good luck shrinking into obscurity conservatives.

the fact that Obama's speech resonated so much looks to republicans like it's "all show no substance". but to those in the country who ARE feeling disenfranchised, who ARE in trouble, OBama's speech was not rhetoric, it was genuinely moving and exciting. and I think the momentum in the coming months is going to be too much for McCain to bear.

if all he has is "Obama's too young, not enough experience, etc." and he's 72 years old and his VP is younger AND less experienced than Obama, I don't see how they can do anything but fizzle out.

THAT BEING SAID, I have been a democrat for my whole life, and I have learned to NEVER underestimate the Dems' ability to fuck their own shit up. holy hell, the face we couldn't take the white house back in 2004 was sad enough. I am optimistic (clearly) and I think everything is going really well, and I'm excited. but I ain't popping the champagne until mid november when Obama gives his victory speech.

McCain tried to put Obama down as an inexperienced celebrity. Now he tells us an inexperienced celebrity (the intersection of Palin's politics and pregnancy made her culture-war celebrity) is just what we need! Her "executive experience" is worthless to the presidency (and with McCain's age and health it's the presidency we should be talking about). Alaska's population is less than Fort Worth, Texas. She might as well be a mayor. Palin is the scary character who becomes "president" in a sci-fi movie where the ENTIRE government (including Laura Roslin's level) is wiped out. McCain thinks she should be first in line. Ludicrous.

This is McCain making a play for history (aka picking a woman) while also serving his "maverick" persona in bucking the expected GOP predictions. Meanwhile, it may just be one of the most looney/risky political moves I've ever seen.

As for her experience vs. Obama's, think about it:

Palin is 44 years old.

She has to be ready to take the Office at a moment's notice should something happen to McCain.

She's pro-life and a Bible thumper.

She's been governor of a state of approx. 600,000 people for less than 2 years. (That's hardly managing a state the likes of New York, Texas, Virginia, or California.)

Before that, she was mayor of a town of only 6,000 folks.

She has no Congressional - federal experience.

She has no foreign policy experience whatsoever. (Yes, Biden will mop the floor with her on this issue.)

Meanwhile, she supports oil drilling in ANWR. (And if I had to put money down, I'd say this was a huge factor in McCain's decision. Because who has more "authority" on this potential fuel-source subject than the governor of Alaska?)

From what I've read so far, she sounds like a nice, intelligent woman. A fighter. But this just screams "bizarre token choice" by McCain. And considering Obama's magnificent performance last night, McCain hasn't made it any easier on himself by doing this; his work is definitely cut out for him. So, while I conceed that anything can happen between now and the election, with this VP pick, it may very well be that McCain just handed the Presidency to Obama on a silver platter.

The point nobody seems to be making.

Both McCain and Obama are going after the same votes, and risking alienating their base while they're at it (though McCain is taking a much bigger risk in that regard). Obama's speech was HEAVY on small-c conservative values - hard work, self-reliance, tax cuts for the middle class, accountability in government, etc. He's trying to play in McCain's playground, and I'd say he's winning. But the Obama camp are TERRIBLE when it comes to rapid-response. Whenever he gets a question he wasn't prepared for, or they have to react to an unexpected move from the McCain team, they stammer, fumble, and very often have to clarify their position the next day. Criticizing the veep nominee because she has the same weaknesses as your nominee for PRESIDENT is not bright. A much better strategy would be for them to IGNORE her. Say nothing. Treat the veep nominee as the meaningless token they really are. The veep nominee makes SO LITTLE DIFFERENT to the end result, UNLESS you make a big deal out of it. It's like a "family values" group complaining about a no-name band. They just help build their name-recognition.

Good points and please know that I'm not trying to sound like I'm shouting her down. She is actually rather progressive for a Republican, more so than any of the other major GOP VP candidates, I think.

But Obama's strength seems to come from his judgment and the fact that he genuinely fucking cares. So, there is a distinction here - it was the people who picked Obama as their candidate seemingly for this reason (experience or not). But it was McCain that personally picked Palin seemingly out of a hat(experience or not). And considering McCain's track-record as of late, that doesn't exactly instill a lot of confidence especially when you think that she could be left whistling in the wind should something dire happen to him.

Conversely, I found this quote by Palin (apparently made a month ago) quite interesting:

“As for that VP talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the VP does every day?" -- Yikes!

You know...one of the more likable qualities of Obama is that he's trying to encourage people to stop the divisive, mean-spirited, Anti-American discourse that has been on display here. Did I say Anti-American? yes, I did! THe American form of Democracy means everyone gets a voice, everyone gets a vote, and people find a way to share opinions, disagree at times, and still work together. The ridiculous levels of name-calling, generalizing, and demonizing of dissenting opinions that I have just read through is exactly the problem any more. Sadly, many of the Obama supporters are too busy deriding anyone who disagrees with them to realize that they are acting counter to what their candidate preaches. That would suggest to me that most of you would equally support Kermit the Frog or Buckaroo Banzai for President as long as they were running as a Democrat. Is we can't debate respectfully, then maybe we have each look at ourselves and ask what we each can do differently. Simply put: Get a grip, people! People who disagree with you are not evil.

I'd like to see the energy and resources be put into something else; something that will genuinely begin the process of conversion that we will see take place over the next decade.

Also, drilling in ANWR can be seen as nothing more than a concession to the big oil companies while hiding behind a dubious smokescreen of price gouging/corruption investigations. If big oil gets what it wants, then I've little doubt they will throw their weight behind the obliging candidate.

If it really were that simple, why wouldn't the GOP have done the same thing 8 years ago? Kay Bailey Hutchison... sure. Sara Palin... give me a break. Even Rudy Guiliani would've been a stretch--- had the city he governed not been larger than 39 U.S. states. The state of Alaska, however, doesn't even have 1/4 the population of Chicago. Minus the last 2 years, Palin's had a constituency smaller than at least 10 freshman class "vice presidents" at US universities. Incidentally, most of *them* can't legally run for office. Despite their "governing experience," of course.

and this is a man who might actually literally be insane.

running this state for a year qualifies you to run a country like playing Counter Strike for a year qualifies me to be shipped off to Iraq.

and before you start whining about Obama, please just realize that this whole "Executive" experience is 90% about foreign policy and the management of the US's place in the world. and Palin has NO experience in doing that.

she majored in journalism, Obama in political science with an emphasis on foreign relations. (McCain majored in getting bad grades and adding to his disciplinary record, but that's neither here nor there).

in her one ACTUAL piece of functional governing in Alaska, when she cancelled the bridge to nowhere, she whined all the way through her public statement and never actually admitted that the bridge was a horrendous waste of over 300 million dollars in the middle of an economic crisis.

look, all points aside, can we PLEASE stop saying, "1 year of executive experience!!!" as if that ends the argument. running Alaska, and running it through mediocrity and half-measures, does not trump ANYTHING.

AND THE REAL POINT HERE IS THIS: look at what we're doing? we're already comparing her to Obama, NOT JOE BIDEN...because if we did that...seriously? I mean, seriously? running alaska for a year? how abotu Joe Biden has been in the senate since he was 28, and has as much foreign relations experience as virtually anyone in the senate.

conservatives are REALLY having to scramble to make any logical argument that picking Palin was anything other than a stupid and unsuccessful attempt to grab more votes. and it's a dangerous and disgraceful thing to do when you're main candidate is elderly and has had major health problems.

Two years ago this broad was Mayor of a 6,000 person town. She has been Gov of Alaska for a little more than one year. This qualifies her to be a heartbeat away from running the country how? As for executive experience, Lincoln had no executive experience, just service in state and federal legislature - just like Obama. And JFK had no executive branch experience, just service in the legislature - about the same number of years as Obama. This former beauty queen and TV reporter is qualified to suck my dick. Her as the VP is a bad joke. I'm an anti-war libertarian who would rather have as President Ron Paul or Jesse Ventura, but with McCain as a statist tax and spender who never met a war he didn't love, I'll take Obama Jesus over McNuts and Mrs. Brady.

short attention span? don't remember conservatives attacking Clinton for being from a podunk state?

I could point out that Arkansas saw tremendous growth under Clinton, or that it's a MUCH more important state than Alaska (it's consistently in the top 10 for business growth, best states for small business, etc.) but that's beside the point.

my point (that you clearly missed) was that executive experience does not, and SHOULD NOT trump other types of experience, INCLUDING education and legislative experience.

I mean, wouldn't you rather take Joe Biden's 30 years in the senate over 1 year managing 600,000 people in the tundra?

if we were talking about New York, or California, maybe, but come on...

people touting that are grasping at straws because there's nothing else to grasp at with Palin but air...

Blacks can unite behind one candidate because African-American culture is largely monolithic. That's generalizing but it's more true than Hispanics, who come from many different cultures and countries with different infulences and values. Now when you're talking about women in general, that's an even more diverse pool. Palin will only appeal to conservative, Christian women, but they probably weren't going to vote for Obama or Hillary. I don't see her swaying many opinions other than ones away from McCain.

Everything I said about McCains policies were true. Saying "generalizations" is more conservative generalizing on your part. offshore oil drilling is a strawman bullshit alternative. And it is by no means a short term alternative until we think of something better. That oil could potentially take decades to get to gas pumps and when it does it's effect would be mediocre at best due to it's very unsubstantial quantities. The damage wrought isn't even close to worth it. Trickle down economics, are speculative at best and overly simplistic. Thats the brand of economics we've been practicing through the now inarguably disastrous Bush administration and everything is going straight to hell. As for McCains cowboy style foreign policy, it hasnt worked for us since world war 2 and it wont work now. Our standing in the world is the lowest it has ever been and since we no longer have the might of our military to back us up Im not exactly sure what McCain is proposing to get that standing back up. Our cloak and dagger horseshit in evolving nations has completely blown up in our faces, we are stuck in a quagmire int he middle east that has left us totally ill equipped for real threats, as our impotence in Russia has proven, and everyone in the world hates us. you think a guy like McCain can change that? are you suggesting Palin is comparable to Grover Cleveland?

or that....New York is comparable to Alaska?

next you'll tell me the war in Iraq is going swimmingly and Lost just keeps getting better and better...

bottom line, as soon as we have the debates, it's done. you can argue flash vs. substance all you want, but I didn't here conservatives complaining about it when Reagan was up there. the door swings both ways. conservatives nominated a 72 year old stodgy white guy who stutters. liberals nominated a 47 year old good-looking, well spoken african american.

that's the ballgame. if you hate it, then fine, I understand, and I don't begrudge anyone saying, "Well, that's not how it should be". maybe you're right. but that doesn't change the fact that as soon as these 2 are on a stage together, McCain will implode. and unless Innuit votes count for 100,000 apiece, Palin is NOT going to help him.

so instead of putting the onus on me, how about you tell me why Palin is so great? (and bear in mind, I am not a member of the NRA (as she is), I'm not for teaching creationism in schools (as she is), I don't want a CONSTITUTIONAL BAN on gay marriage (as she is) and I am not pro-life (as she is). the reason I mention all of this is that the main argument for her is that she is going to suck all of Hillary's supporters form Obama. and they all pretty much disagree with everything Palin says.

For anyone thinking Biden will destroy Palin in the debates really needs to go back and watch the debates she had against Frank Murkowski (former govenor and Alaskan senator from 1982 to 2002). Also she has been dealing with the oil companies as of late and winning, and trust me the oil execs are a whole lot scarier than any political leader in the world.(well except maybe that crazy ass Kim Jong Il). BUt my main reason for not voting for Barrack is simple, why vote for a man who's campaign was started in the living room of a known terrorist, Just look up the name William Ayers and tell me that Obama will be anything but bad for this country.... You have to be a certified wing-nut to say she's "just as qualified as Obama." Sarah was governor for 2 years and worked in the state govt for 20 months. Obama worked in the state govt for 8 years and was a national senator for four years. Also, he has a law degree and is a Constitutional scholar, while Sarah, um, has a bachelor's degree in journalism and won a beauty contest. And that's just looking at their resumes, not taking into account that Obama knows what the fuck he's talking about. I could see Obama, Biden or McCain - even Hillary - as president, but not Sarah Palin. If she's such a great candidate, than why wasn't she in the Republican Primaries? Yes, I personally think he was a disaster prone gagfest but you could see the logic of his choice Electorally speaking and for the campaign coffers and grass roots.

Palin is completely leftfield.

The mad rush of News Anchors to find out who the hell she was by jumping on Wikipedia was probably only matched by surprised Republicans doing the same.

She. Is. A. Gamble. If it pays off McCain will be hailed a Genius but if it doesn't... well I notice that there are some loud voices from McCains campaign stressing again and again how this was such a PERSONAL choice of McCains. Has anyone in this talkback created fiction based on Reagan/Bush administration members "knowing" and having prior contact with Bin Laden? No. By your logic, one can purport the silly argument that Bin Laden placed Bush in office, and be excused by saying it was merely their "opinion."
