Something tells me, this is gonna be QT's last gasp to prove himself. Dogs was good, but is overrated by a lot of people. Pulp was great and there really is no denying it. Four Rooms was horrible. Jackie Brown wasn't as great as people make it out to be. And Kill Bill was great, until Part 2 came out. And don't even get me started on Death Proof. So now you have, in my opinion, one last chance for redemption. Casting Pitt is was good choice because he seems to always deliver the goods. The ball is in your court Quentin, don't fuck it up.

Has anyone here ever been hit by a car? Or know somebody who got hit by a drunk driver and died? I know that seems rather unlikely, but at the time in my life when I saw it, I had recently gone through both of these experiences and Death Proof was the ultimate edge of my seat movie at the time. Real risk of death with real stunts, an amazingly deplorable villain, and badass protagonists who weren't afraid to kick the living shit out of him. Death Proof is a feel good movie for me. I admit it has it's flaws, but I was just felt so connected with the characters, I couldn't help but love it. Death Proof certainly is a tough nut to crack, half the people love it. The other half hate it (not counting QT haters) At the very least, it will stand as an eternal curiosity.

Rez Dogs, True Romance, Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers, From Dusk Till Dawn. He wrote or had a hand in writing all of those. Most writers/directors can't even do one great film and QT was involved with 5. And he directed Res Dogs and Pulp Fiction, the latter being the best movie of the last 20 or 30 years. So yeah, he is the way Woody Allen is...way past his prime and it's ok to say his current stuff is kinda sucky as long as you don't deny his earlier brilliance and genius.

Yeah, it's not meant to be taken as a "real" movie. It's a vanity project, but still the guy could at least make an effort to make a decent film. A LOT of people are like, "Yeah, Kill Bill was good, until Part 2". You guys are obviously entitled to your opinion, but Kill Bill 2 is great, and if either of the two were to receive any Oscar nominations, it would have been 2. Why do you people hate it? Because it's heavily less action packed than part 1? That's kind of the point. It's a character study of Bill and The Bride (which is prety obvious from the opening scene). But the film definitely delivers, and you get to see that each of these killers aren't 1-dimensional characters after all, like the first film makes you think. Uma's acting here is fucking phenomenal, and in spite of 2 being less action-packed, it's still got a ton of wonderful action pieces. Such as Uma fucking CLAWING HERSELF out of a grave, as L'Arena slowly culminates in the background. I can understand people not liking Kill Bill 2 because it IS different from Part 1, but that's the point, and it's definitely not a fault. Guess what, I'm pretty sure I prefer Part 2.

As one of them, I feel like a father who's disappointed in his son. I had high hopes for him. I want him to succeed. I want him to build on the brilliance of his earlier work. But he doesn't. He had so much potential and he squandered it. Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction are amongst my favorite movies ever. And I loved Jackie Brown, which I thought, flaws aside, showed a lot of growth and maturity in his filmmaking without sacrificing his trademark-style. Then he decided he wanted to be a B-movie exploitation king. Sigh. God bless him, I'm sure there a lot of people that aspire to that level of filmmaking. But we expect that from the Paul Anderson's of the world, not the Quentin Tarantino's. QT's Oscar days are behind him, his chance to be a great director...a Scorcese or P.T. Anderson or Coen Brothers or Spielberg. I mean, don't get me wrong, I like his movies (although they have been consistently worse and worse...simpler and simpler) and he has yet to reach the depths of faded glory that DePalma or Coppola have sunk to. His movies are still coherent and entertaining for what they are. But they should be better. He's a a talented chef cooking hamburgers every night. Tasty, delicious hamburgers...but he's playing it safe and staying in his wheelhouse, not daring to be creative anymore. Maybe, like Scorcese, he will find material to re-energize himself and have a creative comeback to once again be the QT that he was and reach the heights we thought he would. I think a lot of us thought this movie was going to be it. It will not be. I'm sure he'll make it entertaining enough, he has the talent for that, but it won't be a movie that people will remember or praise or look back fondly on like Pulp Fiction. And that's why the "elitists" sadly shake their head at QT, not because he's terrible, but because he's just very good. And he should be exceptional.

The truth is QT's movies have merely been average since Pulp. And it's not so much hate, as it's the lathering people have for his next movie. He's pigeonhold himself into his own stereotype, like Tim Burton and Kevin Smith. He tried to break out of that mold with Death Proof and failed miserably. Look what happened with Burton's Planet of the Apes and Smith's Jersey Girl. Both of those films were different then what both had delivered in the past, and those films were horrible. What's a QT film: snappy dialogue and outrageous violence. If it works for him, then so be it. But if you continue making the same type of film time after time, then you better bring your 'A' game because everything you make will be compared to your masterpiece, which in QT's case was Pulp.

It's cool to be the armchair director/writer, pointing out how you could do this better, or that better, but you still live at mom's and work your job at the local bookstore or coffeeshop. INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, the script, ratchets up QT's love of cinema to a whole new level. Is it as good as PULP or REZ DOGS? Probably not. But the characters and situations wrangle old, worn cinematic tropes into fresh, relevant, exhilarating set pieces. When was the last time you saw a group of Nazi's in a bar practicing spit takes in honor of one of their most treasured actresses? All of it in service to the internal drama of the scene, all of it brilliantly layered in there as ballast to ground the scene in the everyday with our humanity peeking around the edges -- just before QT drops the hammer on you and turns the scene into a bloody, pulpy, piece of cinematic vengeance? I haven't seen the whole thing and I was watching the director's cut unfortunately so the shitty CGI was a little distracting and I can't say how I feel about it yet. The best shit Lucas ever did he had help or at least input from more talented people. Guy can't write worth shit and he's a lousy director. He throws it all together in the editing room and "fixes" everything with the computer machines later. They had to digitally add a hand in ATTACK OF THE CLONES so Hayden Christensen could stroke Natalie Portman. Why put a value on what a film is about? In the words of Roger Ebert, "Judge a film not on what it is about, but how it is about it." Maybe a good movie could have been out of the general idea of House Bunny - a funny satire or college sex romp. That's usually my stock answer when I'm asked which QT flick is my favorite. I know a lot of people who don't get Quentin. I attribute this to me being an undercover geek and them being "normal." Quentin is not "normal." He lives inside his own head, as do many of we cinephiles. So when I say that it's always Quentin's last movie that is my favorite, I mean that this particular human being speaks my language, and every few years I get to speak it with him via cinema. It's not like talking to God, but it is other-worldly to a large degree... for me. That's a pretty great experience when 90% of what's out there doesn't speak to me at all. Did I enjoy Dogs, Pulp, Jackie and the Kill Bills -- YES I DID. And still do. But let me say this; Death Proof is a masterpiece. I'll tell you why in a minute. Most people who saw Grindhouse in the theater preferred Planet Terror. That's perfectly understandable. At the time, so did I. It's a rare thing to see a double feature presented that way (trailers and all) in this day and age. I've been around a long time and still couldn't remember what that really felt like in it's day. I couldn't explain to close friends why this Grindhouse thing that QT and RR put together was great; I just knew that it was. I held off buying the DVD's as seperate extended features for nearly a year after they were available. This was because I wanted that exact Grindhouse experience again and nothing else. No extended Planet Terror or Death Proof substitute would do; never ever, never. Then something happened. Starz broadcast Grindhouse exactly the way it was shown in the theater. Starz went on to show Planet Terror extended version and finally, Death proof extended version (all in HD if that tickles your fancy). I DVR'd Death Proof in it's extended version (as Planet Terror extended is only slightly different in content but still very good) and watched Death Proof 3 or 4 times in a week. Sure enough, there it was. There WHAT was, you ask? The SUBTEXT. The underlying film behind it's face. The still waters running so deep and they always do with Quentin, but are almost always ignored, sluffed-off and misunderstood by "normal people." I know many of you will now call bullshit. That is exactly what people do. They mock what they either don't understand or do not wish to take the time to understand. How many casual QT fans gave up on him after Pulp. A lot. Stay with me... because here is why Death Proof IS great. See, Rodgiquez didn't ask you to look deeply into Planet Terror. He's like, "Just enjoy this crazy thing we made." It takes a man like Frank Miller to deepen Rodgriguez and draw him in a bit (ala the brilliant Sin City). But Quentin is a different animal. He gives you Death Proof (and I'm talking about the extended version that screened at Caan) and says, "I dare you to take this ride with me. I dare you to live it with me - exactly the way I live it." Now, most people agree on one thing when talking about Death Proof; Kurt Russel is great in it. This is of course, TRUE. His performance sits up there with Plissken and McReady. What many don't realize is what Quentin wrapped around that performance. Someone mentioned an example earlier. The look; that look on Rosario's face. It's at that moment, when she realizes why something she could give two shits about was suddenly electric. Kurt's terrific work HAS wrapped around it a horrific, electrifying, whiskey stained, stunningly vibrant, sonically driven, nightmarishly beautiful, blood-stained dream. Did you see the colors... the horror. This ain't Magnolia or Panic Room kids. I like PTA and Fincher too, but please. Perhaps you need to really watch this film again. Did you ever really understand or appreciate the real Quentin Tarantino? Or were you just pretending to...

A gymnast may go up on the beam, execute a single forward flip, and it may be the most goddamn beautiful, heart-wrenchingly gorgeous single front flip in the history of mankind. But that person will not be thought of as a gold medal Olympian, because they did not aspire to anything great...they did not push themselves or try something difficult. Likewise, a filmmaker may be content making simple movies, and the films may be a hell of a fun ride and may be well-crafted little genre movies. But to become something exceptional, they need to aspire to more.

I just find Tino's films too damn smug these days. I'm not hating for the sake of it and I certainly aint 'too elite' or 'not elite enough' or what-the-fuck-ever. (Well maybe the latter). I hope Basterds is great so I can get the double-disc. Hell, I hope Uwe conquers the critics with his next video game adaption (hope it's the Atari 2600 classic 'Adventure')

Its now in fashion to hate tarantino apparently. all this talk of how its all been downhill since pulp fiction and how he was never that talented in the first place. but that's all it is - sheep babble and bullshit. what goes around, comes around, and in a year or two he'll be fashionable once again. mark my words. its also apparent that the people who are harshest on him are those who jumped on the bandwagon when he was hip, didn't really know much about cinema history and his inspirations (ie. they believed he was the first person to tell a story out of chronological order, or use post-modern dialogue, or they didn't know his references-they thought he was the first to come up with a lot of the stuff he used), and subsequently over-rated him and proclaimed him the second coming. whereas those who simply saw him as just a talented director (ie. me) are much more forgiving and appreciative of his later works. i applaud him for going the 'b - movie' route if that's what he truly wants to do. too many people just want him to rehash semi-realistic crime movies ad nauseam. tarantino should do what he wants, and not a path some critic dictates he should follow because it shows 'artistic growth'. apart from death proof, which was really just a throwaway movie, there's hasn't really been much of a dip in quality - jackie brown and the combined kill bill are just as good as reservoir dogs and pulp. in fact, the last 30 mins of kill bill vol. 2 contained his most mature themes and writing to date (as, of course, did jackie brown), so for those who think he's wandered into genre juvenilia, well you're just not looking very hard are you? so suck it.

Like someone else pointed out up above, I was 14-16 when I became a fan of Tarantino. Perhaps it was his influence that saw me extend out into trash cinema and obsure foreign action films and the like. I probably would have gone that way anyway, but this was pre-internet when you sort of had to discover things for yourself. But now? I've seen all the films he steals from. And his much vaunted "dialouge" i.e, two people having a stilted conversation that makes reference to popular culture and slow, deliberate attempts at talking in some kind of catch phrase lingo is boring. It's done. The last great thing he did was writing Kill Bill. Too bad the finished film was merely a shadow of what was on the page.

I am no slave to fashion. I guess we are all armchair directors, but I have disliked Mr. T from the git-go. I think his films are gratuitously violent and project the mentality of a 12 year old, that may need counseling. Correct me if I am wrong, didn't he make a film called Hostel.. it was crap who ever made it- gore and sick crap I that really tells us there is a great lack of real storytelling in his work which only appeals to special effect and gore freaks who would not know a good story if it slapped them in the face. This lack of creative talent is not good film making. It just promotes more mass murderers and desensitized youth and adults. Please allow me to vote no on MR. T. If the muse was ever upon him, she got disgusted and left the building long ago.

Arguably, the GREAT AMERICAN FILMS are GENRE movies. Gangster movies - Godfather I and II, Goodfellas, Bonnie and Clyde. Westerns - The Wild Bunch, The Searchers, Red River. Mystery/Suspense - Fucking HITCHCOCK! Comedies - Some Like It Hot, Dr. Strangelove, Annie Hall. Shit, comedies, those are what are supposedly the hardest things to make anyhow. I, for one, think it is fine NOT to "rise above the genre." I think that making an exceptionally well done genre film is a feat within itself. But, films that can entertain you on the basic levels of their genre AND subtly bring up themes (like most of the films I just mentioned) are often make it to "the canon." Shit, look at last year where a crime film (Zodiac), a ham-fisted old school epic (There Will Be Blood), a neo-noir/western (No Country For Old Men), and a regular western (Assassination of Jesse James) were released. All of them have the requisite violence and excitement of their genre, but manage to "exceed" the expectations certain people have of that genre. I for one, think Tarantino has managed the trick in nearly all of his movies. But like I said, even when he wasn't "rising above," I was still enjoying myself.

Eli Roth made Hostel. Tarantino "executive produced" it. Which really doesn't mean much. Steven Spielberg executive produced Transformers, and obviously his signature is all over it.

earlier. I guess I see Death Proof as great because it transcends the sum of its parts. Sure, it's exploitation. Jackie, Bill and Death Proof are examples of exploitation to one degree or another. It's that QT didn't try to make Pulp Fiction over and over that I respect. He reaches for genre films that are not classically the type that people respect. But he took what was great about slasher films and car flicks and paid homage, yes, but essentially elevated the medium. That's pretty great, even if it's not everyone's cup of tea. I find it highly entertaining and twisted and fun because for me it is. Quentin acheived greatness within this genre and that is rare. That's how I see Death Proof; a gem of that genre. It's not Pulp Fiction 2. Did Kasdan, Lucas and Spielberg elevate the serials of the 30's and 40's with Raiders? I say so, but some of my dad's friends say it was more thrilling living through those cliff-hangers when they were little kids. These guys are 80+ now. Did I love the slasher drive-in stuff when I was a kid? Hell yeah. For me, Quentin took the best of all that stuff, mixed it up with a modern cinematic sensibility and delivered the goods. Yes, this is his standard MO and a lot of people are bored with his brain children by now; I get that. Death Proof is raw and evil, but it's suppose to be. It's also really colorful and slick and that's pretty cool. Granted, it ain't Lawrence of Arabia, but I like it more every time I see it. Maybe it's QT's Kubrick film and won't be appreciated for 11 years?

Their dialogue gets repetitive in later films and very tiresome. In Pulp Fiction it was fresh. But it was in Kill Bill 2 that I realised Tarantino dialogue is getting stale, forced and repulsive. "That fucking hat" piece was trying to say the least, the Caradine "Batman, Superman" speech was so jarring and out of place. Then it was further downhill from there with his next movies. I hope Tarantino new movie will return to the glory days of Reservoir and Pulp and bring something fresh again.

It was fresh in RD, PF and Jackie Brown, his most mature film and most underrated imo. Don't get me wrong i'm a person that still goes to watch Allens films. I went to Match Point, Anything Else, etc. The thing w/ QT is after Jackie Brown he waited entirely too long to make another film. And I f'ing hate some of this casts w/ the exception of Pitt. The Jew Bear is a f'ing Joke. Mike Meyers cameo is retarted. Everything else does nothing for me. But again the a major role still has not been casts and lets see who he gets for the young girl.

Why wasn't deathproof listed in there? Because of 7.3 IMDB score or 61% rottentomatoes? And don't tell me you didn't notice the fall in both the metrices you used [with slight upswing for KB overshadowed by massive drop for DP] Now, we're not discussing relative merits of the movies, but as you said, these two sites can say a lot, and looking at those figures I'd say QT is slipping. And just looking at the way AICN is hyping up IB, I got a feeling it will end up lower ranks than even Deathproof. I hope am proven wrong, nothing will please me more. But fact is, QT is slipping, though not as badly as M Night or anything, but QT is in a leauge of his own and needs to be compared to no one but his own work.
