Looking forward to 24. I wonder how bad the last 6 episodes were.

I just hope they get 24 right. It hasn't been on TV in a very long time. A bad script or season could mean the end of the series

a penultimate season?

penultimate means "second last" so that makes no sense. But yes, this season should be very, very good. Not that improving on season 6 would be hard. Improving 24 to Lost/BSG/Shield/Dexter quality will be difficult, but based on their Emmy winning season 5, definitely not impossible. Here's hoping this is the right decision!!

I'm always amazed at the current production climate of Hollywood. They've had 19 months (minus the strike) and they still can't get their scripts written by now? What have they been doing with their time?

Earth to clueless and apparently talentless 24 Producers: you will have had a 19-month period to have gotten it right! Why not make it as good as you can? Gee, I was sort of expecting you would since THAT'S YOUR FUCKING JOB. For crying out loud, how hard is it to sit around a room and come up with 24 action episodes and cliffhangers? If you are still trying to get it right, then you SERIOUSLY need to think about bringing newer, fresher blood into the writing and producing staff.

Man, I really have my fingers crossed that they don't screw this up. Last year sucked beyond all belief. It was the first season I didn't buy on DVD, and that's saying a lot since it's already on mark-down at Costco and I still couldn't see dropping a simple 20 bucks on it...

Seriously, in their defense, all the time in the world to write something doesn't mean you know what it's going to be like once cameras roll. What may have seemed great on the page may not be so great on the day.

Besides, saying they had all this time means it should be better than anything else on TV is a weak argument. If that were true shouldn't every first season show be the best thing on TV? I mean, they had all the time in the world to write it right?

If they've got the opportunity to make it better though, I say take it.

That said, this shit had better be good. After the dissapointment of last season and this long-ass hiatus this show's got some serious rebuilding to do.

Please...

for fuck's sake, the writers need to plan something out for a change. Even S2, which I think strikes the best balance between excitement and plausibility, still showed us how Kim could meet a cougar and then get weirded out by Johnny Drama. For a show that gets a lot of credit (much of it deserved) for reviving the interest in serialized TV, it is embarrassing how it was beat at its own game by BSG, Lost, and others because the writers for the other shows bothered to map out their arcs more than a few eps in advance. Granted, the final five arc in BSG only came about well into the show's run, but even that show's level of story-planning puts 24's to shame. Let's hope 24 can get back on its feat this year and go out like a champ since IIRC this is the last season the show is under contract for.

The big "Spin-the-wheel-for-a-24-Plot" (kinda like the ones on "Wheel of Fortune" or "Price is Right") broke, and needs to wait for professional repair. The wheel apparently spun a bearing and fell off the spindle onto the floor, and the pie pieces scattered all over on the floor. The writers apparently had trouble putting them back on in the proper order, even though there are only three discrete variations of pieces. It could have been much worse; they spin the wheel so fast and hard, it buzzed across the room, but it only took out a PA. He's expected to survive.

Prison Break > 24

A whole year off and they're still struggling to make 24 great once more. I'm tired with the uninspired use of the great format, I'm tired with the 2 dimensional characters and their bickering, I'm tired with SWAT teams bursting into buildings and I'm tired of the suspect-of-the-week always getting killed right before he's about to spill the beans just so the writers can drag us into another tedious episode of insipid scripting and direction-less set pieces. 24? Yawn.

Prison Break, on the other hand, has done something after it's amazing (as good as 24 season 1) first season by actually building on it's own story, introducing new characters who are different from the ones who were killed last season and tweaking the format so it's still fresh, interesting and exciting. I didn't have much hope for it's fourth season but it kicked off with a complete change of direction and I'm still gripped by the action. However convoluted it may be (and no more so than 24) it's still at least watchable and fun.

I'm afraid 24 has become stale and superseded by it's younger cousin.

...if they're still trying to make the season presentable after all this time. In essence, they're saying that it's not even as good as season 6 yet. Any writer who can't pull their weight after that stupid strike should be shitcanned as soon as possible to make way for some fresh blood. I don't want TV to end up the wasteland that movies have become.

They're ripping off season five of the A Team. You know, the one where they're working for the government and the show gets cancelled. They've even stolen the Frankie character for no discernible reason. And that stuff with T Bag in the desert was embarrassing. In fact, the script in general looked like it had been written by an eager teenager. Basically the entire cast are now stuck in the horrid horrid B plot from season one that everybody hated but which they've now resurrected because they've got nothing else. Perhaps they can bring back Robin Tunney from the dead next and pretend she's still locked in that house. And maybe T Bag can just grow a new hand.

you could think that the title "redemption" is some sort of meta-reference to 24 being better after season 6, and also having something to do with Jack getting better after being in the dark... but Exile just sounded cooler.
Story arc

Actually I think the re-introduction of the season 1 "Company" story arc was one of the highlights of the S4 premiere. True, in S1 it seemed to detract from the Fox River events but it's now pulling these threads together into an actual story arc. I think the main problem with 24 is that it never really follows through from one season to the next. Same shit, different year. At least PB is building on what has come before. 24 just repackages it.
The 24 writers spent the last year creating Sarah Palin.

Prison break is ok!! New season different story. Great how they killed off some main players in the first episode. Very refreshing.. True, the story line is completely bogus. But it is like a tv-comic and it IS entertaining and surprising.....
