Vern eulogizes the great Donald E. Westlake

Well, shit. The first bummer of 2009, or the last one of 2008. Turns out last night before his New Year's Eve dinner the great mystery writer Donald Westlake collapsed and died. He was 75.

We knew it was coming... Fox aims to halt WATCHMEN's release...

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. We don't typically follow legal crap here and we've already made the exception on WATCHMEN because it might affect the release date.

Rest In Peace Ann Savage

Hey guys, Quint here with a little notice for you classic movie fans out there. I feel a little bit out of place reporting this because I've never once seen one of Ms. Ann Savage's movies.

The one she's most known for is DETOUR, which was on my A Movie A Day list (still is), but seemed to keep slipping past every time I dipped into noir... to the point where I have a 5-noir box set featuring DETOUR and I hit all 4 other films in that set, leaving DETOUR for later.

WATCHMEN in trouble, Fox wins initial judge ruling over distribution

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. If you've been paying any sort of attention to the WATCHMEN film you know that Fox has been trying to stop its release, claiming they still own distribution rights from when they had the project in the early '90s.

1st image of GAMBIT from the WOLVERINE movie hits... lower your expectations...

Hey folks, Harry here... I've never been the biggest Gambit fan, but I've always respected the character's immense fanbase. Sadly, I'm afraid fans of Gambit will be about as satisfied as VENOM fans were by SPIDER-MAN 3 when they see next summer's WOLVERINE. And I think that disappointment will begin when Gambit fans click on the below link - and then later when they realize that he has a very small part in things... but maybe that's good... if he's forgettable here... perhaps he can be done justice easier later on. Right? Maybe?

God! Please Make Steve Martin Funny Again! New Trailer For PINK PANTHER 2...

Hey folks, Harry here... I never thought that the PINK PANTHER movies were an impossible to recreate series of comedies. I love Peter Sellers' character, but really, did you ever think that it was the sort of character that was absolutely im-fucking-possible for Steve Martin to pull off without looking like he's completely devoid of talent?

Rudy Ray Moore was his name and fuckin' up muthafuckas was his game!!!

Hey guys. Quint here. Looks like 2008 has claimed another larger than life icon of cinema.

Rudy Ray Moore might not be as well known as Isaac Hayes was, but his influence was just as profound.

Like most people, I was first introduced to Moore via his title role in the down and dirty independent blaxploitation classic DOLEMITE. “Who?” “Dolemite, muthafucka!”

Rest In Peace Paul Newman

Hey guys. Quint here with some bad, if not unsurprising news. We got alerted earlier this morning that word of Paul Newman’s death was spreading across Westport after many months of reports of his battle with cancer.

But I have no connections to anybody around Newman and didn’t want to post an obit with the only word being unconfirmed message board posts. And I also didn’t want it to be true.

It’s A Remake! It’s Huge! Matt Reeves Set To LET THE RIGHT ONE IN!

Hey, everyone. “Moriarty” here.

Y’know, I liked CLOVERFIELD. I’ve actually given copies of the film as a gift. I think Matt Reeves is a promising filmmaker, and I’m curious to see what sort of genre fare he’s responsible for in the next few years.

I Cannot Wait To See What They Do Onstage During “Sussudio”... AMERICAN PSYCHO: THE MUSICAL?!?!?!

Hey, everyone. ”Moriarty” here.

The press release pretty much speaks for itself.

I expect Vern will read this news and develop a twitch like Herbert Lom in the later Pink Panther movies. This news is just that goddamn crazy.

”American Psycho, the controversial social satire from acclaimed novelist Bret Easton Ellis, which was adapted into a feature film in 2000 top-lining “Dark Knight” star Christian Bale, will be adapted for the stage.

Can we all agree that Cher as Catwoman is total bullshit?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I love The Dark Knight. Amazing movie, the kind of film that can make people not even want to attempt to make movies because it won't turn out that iconic and badass... I felt the same way after seeing CHILDREN OF MEN.

I trust Chris Nolan implicitly at this point. If WB announced that he had chosen Cher for Catwoman I'd be the first to say, "That's not my choice, but what the fuck do I know? Go for it, big guy."

Now it's Quint's turn to give his thoughts on THE CLONE WARS!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with my own thoughts on Warner’s upcoming THE CLONE WARS, the newest STAR WARS title to hit the big screen.

And I’ve been sitting here watching the craziness go down with the embargo thrown at Harry biding my time writing my own review to post this morning.

Regarding The CLONE WARS Reviews...

Hey, everyone. “Moriarty” here.

I’m not going to spend a lot of time on this because, frankly, it’s being blown up into something it is not. However, I do believe that there should be a clear explanation here so that you guys know what is going on.

When I went to see THE CLONE WARS in Los Angeles, I was told there was an embargo on reviews until the day of release.

BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA is "Like History Written with Tapatio"!!

Beaks here...

Right as I sat down to intro this reader review of BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA, an earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale knocked my Harvey Pekar bobblehead onto the keyboard of my laptop. I knew there were forces beyond our comprehension at work on this movie. If California disappears into the Pacific when I post this review, please tell Robert Smigel to send those long lost Ronald Reagan bits from LATE NIGHT WITH CONAN O'BRIEN to my mother in Ohio.

Thank You For Being A Friend Estelle Getty...

Hey guys. Estelle Getty died yesterday after a battle with dementia. Although her role as the hilariously uncensored Sophia in Golden Girls is first and foremost in my mind, I was surprised to find both TOOTSIE and MANNEQUIN on her filmography. I completely forgot she was in Mannequin!
