David Hare was a mere thirty years old when he put the theater world on notice with PLENTY, a lacerating drama in which a heroine of the Second World War takes out her frustrations on the New Europe by tearing down the Foreign Service career of her generally decent husband. So it is perhaps fitting that, thirty years later, Hare has turned his harshly unsentimental mind to the plight of another complicated woman whose deep discontent with her war record results in the harming of an innocent.

Stephen Daldry was already one of the theater world's most acclaimed directors when he made his feature filmmaking debut with BILLY ELLIOT. And while success in one medium is no guarantee of a career in the other, Daldry's deft handling of the working-class-boy-does-the-ballet drama - which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Director - guaranteed that he wouldn't go scurrying back to the boards beaten and bowed.

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.
THE READER is most definitely on the end-of-the-year radar as far as awards consideration goes. In fact, there's talk that its star, Kate Winslet, might get both a Best Actress Oscar nomination for REVOLUTIONARY ROAD, and a Best Supporting Actress nod for this film. I'm always rooting for Kate, who has never actually won an Oscar before. She's mesmerizing to look upon, she's smart, great at selecting worthy roles, and has a great sense of humor about her career and image.

Hey folks, Harry here with The Amber Spyglass' look at another sure fire Awards time sorta flick, Stephen Daldry's THE READER with Kate "god I love this woman" Winslet and Ralph "one charming bastard" Fiennes! There's a bit of spoiler ahead, but this is more the sort of film that is in the performances... This review will just make you want to see it. I saw MILK today, but am told I can't review it for weeks... but if I could, I'd rave like a maniac after a sexually active Teenager.

Beaks here...
"The big problem with this movie is David Hare's script."
That'd be a first. But if "dense" and "heady" qualifies as a "problem", then I think I know what our reviewer means. Hare's been making his name on "dense" and "heady" since PLENTY debuted at the Lyttleton Theatre in 1978. He's a brilliant dramatist.
